Poll: Keep Griffin or Doc Rivers?

Post#1 » by paulpressey25 » Wed Jan 10, 2024 12:02 am

Here are your choices:

Bucks keep Griffin the rest of the year, and sort it out in the offseason

Bucks fire Griffin and bring on Doc Rivers, who is here under a three year $30mm deal

I'm torn on how to vote here, because Rivers is not a name this board would ever clamor for. So while you'd get immediate relief with Doc, you'd be tied to him for a couple key seasons. Curious how this poll turns out, and your reasons why.

I'm using ONLY Doc Rivers here, under the assumption he'd jump back out of the booth to take this job, and is a plausible mid-season big name hire. Presenting him as the only option in this scenario.

Griff is a 1 on a scale of 1-10, Doc is a 5. Bud is a 7.5. If there is no other choice I'd take Doc. But is there no way we can do better and get another at least 7.5 HC?

Let Doc finish this season. If he wins the title with this team he can have a 10 year contract.

I'll just continue not watching if Doc is the only option.

Doesn't Miami or even Boston have a top guy who could be available?

It is so overwhelmingly addition by subtraction by firing Grief that I voted Doc.

Doc, for all his warts, has experience and clout. And he is not a total imbecile. I think he would implement a simpler, more sensible defense. Offense doesn't need a lot, but he is probably smart enough to spam the Dame/Giannis PnR more.

If you made the only other option Mark Jackson, that would have been a lot harder.

Without looking into it thoroughly is Griffin and this coaching staff bottom 5 in the league? Doc would be a significant upgrade over that.

If Doc is an option what about Mark Jackson? He's another Doc type.

We're only going Doc here, because his name gets linked, he's high profile with a title, and from Marquette (and I think his wife is from Wisconsin)

Doc's had a long career in the NBA, won a title. I don't see him coming in midseason to take the job of another coach. I think that's extremely unlikely to the point of it not even being worth discussing.

Need a candidate that's actually a possibility, PP.

I voted hire Doc - look guys, he has big flaws and I want nothing to do with him, but he's also led numerous teams to conference finals and semifinals even setting aside his Boston championship. He's had stacked rosters and underperformed in the playoffs, but he's LED those stacked rosters including numerous high-octane defenses. We could do a lot worse than giving Giannis and Dame a fighting chance at hero-balling their way to a ring in the playoffs - it feels like we're doing a lot worse than that right now.

Why not just ride it out and deal with Griff in the offseason in this scenario? Because Dame isn't getting younger, nor is the rest of our old roster. We need to have a shot every year we can.

I don't, however, understand the reasoning behind these being the only two options. But I feel strongly about my stance assuming these would be.

So do I want to tank the rest of this season or tank the next few seasons?

Only way I bring in Doc is on a short term deal.

Keyword he mentioned was lack of accountability and more efficient offense, making GA more of a picker and roller. the obvious stuff that Griff is too dense or too out of touch to implement. Hire Doc, and sign Austin since we love the family angle and free roster spots here.

Rivers stated "I'm not that worried about the defense" immediately before the efficient offense comment. Said the Dame-Giannis connection "has to happen" and "that's where the unhappiness is coming from."

Rivers also said: "I trust [Dame] . . . he's trying to figure out where to fit in offensively still . . . now all of a sudden he's trying to figure it out, it's gonna take all year, it really will, but I'm telling you by the end of the year? Milwaukee's gonna be tough.

Agreed we need another guard. Inneresting comments . ..they go on for awhile about the East with MKE in the top 3 and Miami as the most dangerous

As someone who doesn’t believe we actually have a historically good offense because everyone has a historically good offense now, I liked that he said Dame and Giannis need to run more 2 man game. Giannis needs to be more of a screener, a roller, get moving toward the basket more.

Similar to Blake Griffin maybe? Or perhaps…Amare Stoudemire.

The only choice is Doc Rivers? Literally the biggest choker in NBA playoff history?

I'm sure we can find someone better.

If we can get someone who:

1. Abandons whatever Griffin is going on defense and implements anything else.
2. Makes a point to get Dame the ball and spam Dame/Giannis two man game.
3. Has enough credibility that when he tells the guys to try hard, they will actually try hard.

Our title chances will go from 0 to about 25%. That’s Doc.

Phil Jackson? Giannis = Shaq. Dame = Kobe. Khris = Glenn Rice.

The question is partially designed to see how badly people want Griff out. Doc is the archetype of a successful but retread coach.

The poll is to elicit whether you want Griff out badly enough now, that you’d take a slightly flawed replacement that we have to live with for a couple years.

I think Doc is a below average coach, but would take him immediately over Griffin. That’s how bad Griffin has been. All we need is someone to put the Ferrari back on cruise control.
