Someone can correct me if I'm wrong but I'm pretty sure Emeka turned down virtually this exact contract last offseason. Like I said I could be wrong, but given Bogut is at the very least the equal of Okafor imo (and is two years younger) this is a pretty sweet deal.
Wasn't his reasoning for turning it down connected to is pledge to donate half of his yearly contract (or something like that) to Africa part of the reason he turned it down?

That doesn't seem to be a logical reason for turning down a huge contract that is at or above market value, unless he was expecting an owner other than his own (and isn't Bob Johnson the NBA's only African-American majority owner?) to give him a monster contract for the pure fact that some of the money is going to charity.

I seem to remember that being one of his reasons for turning the contract offer down.. and if that is the sole reason he rejected the offer, then I would think he was expecting more financial support from his owner for his philanthropic endeavors.

Half of $60mil goes a very long way in Africa. I think holding out cost him and his charity work quite a bit.
I think this is a good deal on both sides. Even if Bogut never gets better than last year he is an above average center and if it does not work out here Big's always have higher trade value. His contract would be easy to get rid of in a worse case scenario, unlike guys like Bobby Simmons/Corey Maggette.

AS for Okafor, he is a young big former #2 pick, he will get 10mil per.

Just think though, TMAC left Orlando because he wanted them to take Okafor over Dwight Howard. He said something like taking a HS player was showing they were rebuilding and he wanted no part of that.

TMAC and Dwight in the East would have won a title by now.
TMac is one of the biggest playoff chokers in the history of the NBA, so I don't agree with that. He's just not a mentally strong player.

Well he certainly isn't worth that yet... He still has some serious improvements to make before he earns his paycheck.

It's at most a slight overpayment on a per year basis, and the slight overpayment risk far outweighs the risk of him having a great season in a contract year this next year and then having to sign him for much more on a per year basis. It's a very good deal for the Bucks in today's market; look at the salaries around the league in comparison, especially at the center position.

What a **** joke.

The Bucks are making a serious commitment to center Andrew Bogut, who will sign a five-year extension of around $72.5 million, according to agent David Bauman.

Today is the first day for NBA free agents and players seeking extensions to sign contracts.

Bogut's total package over the next six years will be in the $80 million range. The extension does not affect the $6.9 million he is owed for the coming season, the final year of his rookie contract.

"We are close," Bauman said this morning. "I expect something to be announced in the next couple hours."

The $72.5 million is about $13 million less than the maximum contract allowed under NBA salary stipulations.

Bogut, the top overall pick in the 2005 draft, said last season that he wanted to remain with the Bucks for the long-term, despite the team's struggles during the past two seasons.

Bogut played in 78 games last season and averaged 14.3 points and 9.8 rebounds.

The 7-foot center was hoping to sign an extension as early as possible to clear his way to compete with the Australian team in the Beijing Olympics. He now will be able to join the Boomers in their pre-Olympic preparations.

Don't know what happened to my reply, but Bogut is not worth that much money and if the deal is anywhere near 72 or 80 million then I am not pleased with that. 60 mill is a stretch in my opinion anything more than 60 is horrendous.

Bogut's agent must have some discriminating photos of Ron Walter.

We just gave him 14.5 a year?

That is just awful. I have agreed with everything that Hammond and Skiles have done/said thus far... But this I think is a major mistake.

12 million I think was somewhat overpaying... But this is just ridiculous.

Terrible, terrible signing. Hammond is a fricking moron. MCotR gets no gold stars. If you're going to give the guy basically the max, why wouldn't you let him wait one more year for it?

We had all the leverage here and badly overpaid. I wonder who was doing the negotiating on our side, Hammond and his 'hoops family' or Kohl's cronies? Both?

MJS better have their facts wrong as usual or this is absolutely terrible.

That's the question I've asked all along.

Right now, Bogut's probably worth between 5/50 and 5/55. He'd have to absolutely blow up to be worth anything close to what this reported deal is for. Sorry if I'm a bit skeptical that Bogut is going to become Tim Duncan this season.
