2008 Offseason: Habs Edition

Post#1 » by Snayr » Mon Jun 9, 2008 9:48 pm

Alright guys, starting us off this year is Bob Gainey re-signing Maxim Lapierre to a new 2 year deal. Personally I like Lapierre, he is a good 4th line/3rd line bumper and grinder for us, and he's still only 23.

You beat me to it lol!
I was just about to mention it.
I love Maxime Lapierre's style, energy and team player
Now lets pray we get Kostityn and Streit at a cheap price so that we have enough cap for a star! a superstar that is!

Lol where do you keep hearing these things? Anyways, I would love for Selanne to join the Habs. Koivu and Selanne are good friends and they always play well together on Team Finland. He played for less than 3 million last year so if we gave him about that or even a little more I would love to have him on the club!

Canadiens aquire Alex Tanguay from Flames along with a 5th round pick!

WOW WOW WOW WOW WOW!!!!!

We traded this years first rounder and next years 2nd rounder. IMO we got the better of the deals! :D WOO!! Didn't have to give up any big pieces at all.

I also enjoyed the habs acquisition of Tanguay. He obviously had a subpar year playing for Darryl Sutter/Mike Keenan, but c'mon when u think of sutter and keenan and then you think about the type of player Tanguay is... who ever would have thought that they'd mesh??

On the flip side, Montreal is a fast team with alot of good playmakers. AT definetely fits into that role. Not to mention that he's 28 years old (just entering his prime)....

some might say the contract is an issue at 5 million + for an underacieving player, but it's only for 1 year, and I look at it like he's got alot to prove and he's playing for the next contract, with his home town team, coming off a sub-par year... excellent pick up by Gainey. Though a 1st and a second rounder is a little steep but sometimes you gotta pay the price.

Also I love the attempted deal at Sundin. Alot of my habs friends hate Sundin and think he's garbage (though i think most hate is from him simply playing for Toronto) but having watched Mats for so long now, I have really warmed to him. I think he's an excellent captain. He's a stand up guy, he always takes responsiblty and says the right things and he leads by example. As Gainey mentioned he's been durable all these years and although he has lost a step, he still has excellent hands, is a terrific passer and his vision is seemingly only getting better. I have no idea what the price is... but I think Montreal would be a great fit for Mats and this habs fan for one, would love to see it

excellent pickup by the habs. And to possibly have the addition of Sundin would be great.

Lets look at our transactions and picks at the draft:

25. Traded to Calgary for Alex Tanguay
56. RW - Danny Kritso - USA U-18
86. RW- Steve Quailer, Sioux City, USHL
116. G - Jason Missiaen - Peterborough (OHL)
138. F- Maxim Trunev - Cherepovets 2 (Russia)
206. F -Patrick Johnson - Lincoln (USHL)

Fun fact about that goaltender we picked... he's 6'8! Crazy. Anyways, for the looks of it another solid crop of prospects from our scouting staff and GM.

As for being allowed to negotiate with Sundin, looks like we have an inside track of getting him to sign with us in what I think is an excellent move. Sorry MAS but, i'm lovin' it ;) Couple him, with the trade for Tanguay and we have 3 killer lines. Sundin line, Koivu line, and the Kovalev line. now THAT is deep :D!!

Whoa, really? Crazy, we got a 5'6" banger and you got 6'8" keeper... I wish we could see these guys play in the bigs next year for the sideshow matchup.

Haha well I don't think that goalie will be in the League for a little while, but it would be hilarious to see those two side by side.

Edit: Also, looks like Bob Gainey will be headed to Sweden to hook up with Mats Sundin to discuss a contract with the Habs. Woot woot!!

We extended qualifying offers to all of our players that are RFA's today. Here's hoping we see them all re-sign!

Good to see the front office showing commitment to the young pieces the Habs already do have.

Alright, here's a rumour from another Habs board that I skim from time to time:

According to the Team 990 the Canadiens have apparently offered Sundin an offer of 2 years at 15 million. Personally I'm feeling pretty good about that offer and would even go as high as offering him 16 million over 2 years. With that offer we'd still be able to sign all of our RFA's.

Also, looks like we won't be re-signing Streit, and we'll be seeing him play elsewhere next year, same with Ryder (obviously).

The Habs have re-signed Andrei Kostitsyn to a 3 year deal, getting him about 3.25 mill/year. Now in my opinion that is fairly reasonable and I am more than happy to give that to him as he has very well earned it! Glad to hear he's back on the club for the next 3 years :D
