Upcoming Hartenstein free agency

Anyone else getting more and more worried about that upcoming contract extension? At this point I can see teams throwing a 4year/80million contract at him?

Is it a stretch to say he is a top 5/6 Center in this league? I really don't find more than 3-4 Centers I would rather have (depending on who you count as Center or PF etc.). --> Jokic, Embiid for sure and then you have Wemby, Sengun, Gobert....we gonna keep him, right? NEed a vote of confidence here...

Edited thread title, as he's not extension eligible. -JVG

Ihart seems like a guy who would take less money to stay on the Knicks.

While I generally agree here, this is shaping up to be a huge difference.....like 4years/80million vs. what 4years/60million?

Can we do a 2 year deal with a player option after the first and promise him to take care of him after the first year? Or is something like that forbidden in the NBA?

He will get more---look at how other team's coaches are noticing his impact already and raving about him.

Remember the Jazz assistant coach a couple days ago raving about him like "every team needs and Isaiah Hartenstein on their team?" ---the Jazz have 45million in capspace in the summer and Hartenstein is not only a very good Center but also white.

He also prioritizes winning and loyalty. The Knicks have that in spades. He loves NYC. I don't think he has that mentality to go out and prove he's worth more money. He'll get that with the Knicks, but he's also committed to the culture. He's gonna stay a Knick.

iHart is CAA. I would find it hard to believe that certain understandings aren't already in place.

That's not to say that some team can't come and offer him the MAX or something to lure him away. But I don't look around the landscape of the league and see a ton of teams with capspace, who want to dedicate most of it to a C, and are a better situation than NY.

The one thing helping here is that the teams with capspace don't really need a center or are terrible. If Hartenstein is offered a similar contract to what the Knicks can offer, I imagine he would prefer to stay where he knows his role and what is expected of him. If someone offers an additional 20-30 million, well then what can you do. Guy should always take the money in that situation. He has a family to look after.

Not sure about what he'll get on the open market but the max the Knicks will be able to resign him for is a contract starting at $16,178,961 with annual increases in year 2 through 5 of $17,473,278; $18,871,141; $20,380,832 and $22,011,299. That comes to a max of 5 years $94,915,511 (give or take a dollar or two). The AAV is $18.98 million.

For comparisons the max contract given out this previous offseason to a free agent center was a 4 year $78 million contract (Raptors resigning Jacob Poetl). That's a AAV of $19.5 million. After that was Brook Lopez at 2 years $48 million (Bucks resigning him). That's a high AAV ($24 million per) but I think that was just the Bucks showing their appreciation for what Lopez has meant to them (not like they can do anything with the savings anyway to sign anyone else). No other center go a contract above $8 million AAV. Both Poetl and Lopez's contracts IMO are exceptions (I do think the Raptors overpayed a bit for Poetl) not the norm IMO.

The year before that DeAndre Ayton got a 4 year $133 million contract but Hartenstein isn't in that category. After that it was Nurkic at 4 years $70 million and Mitch at 4 years $60 million. No one else was even close after that. You could get a team desperate for a center but Im not sure if theres any team that will go above $19 million AAV for Hartenstein to be honest.

We can only give him a 16M/y deal (early birds). I guess a 69M/4 contract.

Or we can give him a 20M/2Y with PO contract and give him a promise to re-sign next season when he gets full bird's rights.

Make that deal.

Then give him 5-10 more touches for offense next year. Green light to shoot threes.

Trade Mitch

I read somewhere 14.5 million is the max starting salary we could offer. I mean 4years/94mill. would be super competitive, but 4 years/70 million is actually also not bad. I thought the Max we could offer was 4years/60million.

Does anyone have the real figure? Is it 4/70 or 4/94?

IHart earned a 1M bonus this season. I am not sure if you can count this bonus to calculate Early Bird Rights Max Salaries or not. If you count, his Max is 16. If you do not count, his max is 14,4M.

It would be a 94-5 contract. I guess you can not give a 5 year contract if the player is not a rookie. But I am not sure .

Same contract as Hart is my guess. Dude is old school in a way that is fun to watch.

He will get interest from a lot of teams. If you're PHI, wouldn't you kill to have this guy as your backup so you could rest Embiid more and have a safety net to prevent total collapse if Embiid gets injured? Before the trade I thought PHI would go after him and IQ
