My 10 steps to fix the Knicks (dream offseason)
Posted: Sun Feb 21, 2010 9:47 am
This is going to be my shot at the New York Knicks dream offseason.
For this experiment I am going to set the salary cap at $55 million. The bolded numbers will be my running salary cap total. Italicised stuff will be a brief explanation on the other parties thinking.
New York Knicks 2010 Dream Offseason
As of right now for next season the Knicks have Wilson Chandler(2.1),Tony Douglas(1),Danilo Gallinari(3.3) and Eddy Curry(11.3) on the books. This is in $17.8 million in salary. They have team options on JR Giddens(1.1) and Bill Walker(.85) that I would pick up and a QO to Sergio Rodriguez for 2.8 million, which I also woud offer to him. So now we are at 22.55 million going into the draft. The Knicks have two 2nd round picks. their own and the L.A. Clippers (thru Denver/Renaldo Balkman trade). Both of these picks should be between #31-40 (top 10 in the 2nd), so they are pretty decent 2nd round picks. Based on current standings today they would be #38 and #40. So step 1 is drafting Dexter Pittman(Texas/C) and Magnum Rolle(LSU/PF). I am going to say that each pick sign for a 1st year salary of .75 million. Going into FA we are sitting at $24.05 million in salary.
Begin FA
Step 1:
Re-sign Sergio Rodriguez to a 4/$12.5 million contract (2,2.75,3.5,4.25). $23.25 million.
Step 2:
Trade Wilson Chandler and future 2nd round pick (thru Boston/Nate Robinson trade) to L.A. Clippers for DeAndre Jordan(.85) $22 million Clippers are most likely not going to re-sign him since they are the Clippers so might as well get a year from Chandler and a future pick out of it. Chandler Will provide them with some of the athleticism lost in the Al Thornton trade.
Step 3:
Sign Marcus Camby to a 3/$12 million FA contract (3,4,5). $25 million Camby has argueably 3 years left in the tank. Now is the time to rack up the championships. He has made plenty on money over the years so that really isnt an issue.
Step 5:
Re-Sign Tracy McGrady to a 1/$3 million contract $28 million McGrady signs a 1-year deal to prove that he can stay healthy and maybe a team will give him one last half-way decent contract to end his carreer.
Step 6:
Sign Udonis Haslem to a 3/$10.5 million contract (2.1,3.6,4.8) $30.1 million At this point in Haslem's carreer his big money days are behind him. His best best is to hope on the Championship train with the rest of these guys.
Step 7:
Sign-and-trade David Lee to 5/$50 million contract (8,9,10,11,12) and Eddy Curry(11.3) to Toronto for Chris Bosh and Jose Calderon(8.2). Bosh signs 5/$60.5 million contract (10,11.05,12.1,13.15,14.2). $37 million Bosh decides he wants to chase rings and be part of the best team ever instead of only chasing money. After Chris informs Toronto of this it is in their best interest to get what they can from New York. David Lee is as good as it gets from NY. He is an active player and would be a solid compliment to Bargnani and Hedo. They get a year from Curry and then can enjoy that 11 million coming of the books.
Step 8:
Sign Dwyane Wade to a 5/$60.5 million contract (10,11.05,12.1,13.15,14.20). $47 million Wade chases the rings with the rest of theses guys. A chance to be the most special team ever trumps any amount of money, plus as the rings come more money will keep flowing.
Step 9:
Sign LeBron James to a 5/$50 million contract (8,9,10,11,12). $55 million While LeBron is getting paid less than Wade and Bosh, I think it is obvious that LeBron will more than make up the money living in New York. If this all happened he could end this run with a bare minimum of 5 rings.
Step 10:
Win Championships Forever
New York Knicks 2010-2011 NBA roster
PG Jose Calderon/Sergio Rodriguez/Tony Douglas
SG Dwyane Wade/Tracy McGrady/JR Giddens
SF LeBron James/Danilo Gallinari/Bill Walker
PF Chris Bosh/Udonis Haslem/Magnum Rolle
C Marcus Camby/DeAndre Jordan/Dexter Pittman
New York Knicks 2010-2011 NBA roster w/ 2010 contract value in $millions
PG Calderon(8.2)/Rodriguez(2)/Douglas(1)
SG Wade(10)/McGrady(3)/Giddens(1.1)
SF LeBron(8)/Gallinari(3.3)/Walker(.85)
PF Bosh(10)/Haslem(2.1)/Rolle(.75)
C Camby(3)/Jordan(.85)/Pittman(.75)
There is exactly $55 million in contracts for the 2010 season.
New York Knicks 2010-2011 NBA roster w/ minute distribution
PG Calderon(33)/Rodriguez(15)/Douglas(act)
SG Wade(38)/McGrady(10)/Giddens(bench)
SF LeBron(31)/McGrady(17)/Gallinari(act)/Walker(bench)
PF Bosh(30)/LeBron(8)/Haslem(10)/Rolle(bench)
C Camby(28)/Bosh(8)/Jordan(12)/Pittman(act)
There are exactly 240 minutes played in this 9 man rotation. Everyone else would get occasional minutes whenever available.
I think it is pretty safe to say that this squad would pretty much win the next 5 championships at least and at that point would probably just keep n winning them. I tried to make it easy to follow and see exactly what I was thinking at each step. Hope you enjoy.
