I guess the weird Ponzi scheme with future second rounders that Weltman runs finally paid off?

Like others have said, sneaky good deal. If Durant gets another 'ship in the next year or two, I wouldn't be surprised if he hangs it up. He doesn't seem like the type who wants to stay around forever and has dealt with injuries. Plus, this is another asset for a potential trade for an all-star level player.

I like this deal. It’s another 1st to add to potential future trade offers. Denver 25 + Phoenix/Washington 26. Sounds better than saying 3 2nd round picks.

I wonder if this deal has any kind of connection to Bol signing there?

How did either side even conceive of this trade? Did the owners tell the FO they must make a trade this summer and they came up with this bizarre, benign silliness? I’m not saying values are off but…how many man-hours involved in this bold move? :noway:

It probably came about as part of a larger trade discussion that fell apart.

Had me scratching my head.

But as many others mentioned we don’t use 2nd’s anyway so if it adds to few places up in a good draft then I see the positives.

We will be a playoff team able to sneak in a late lottery pick if both Washington and Phoenix are bad that year.

3 super low 2nd round picks for a bet, I am OK with that. It's not like we are getting a overpaid player back and we wouldn't have any roster space for these rookies too, so it's this or trading for cash/future.

Wizards probably will be bad, Suns could be bad if Durant leaves and Booker/Beal gets injured, that's two lottery picks which could be even higher. Hopefully we will be in the playoffs by then, so it sounds a good bet, IMO.

It's better to trade them in advance for some potential value rather than for cash considerations on the night of the draft!

If this FO devoted half the time to wheeling and dealing players as it does to wheeling and dealing second rounders, we'd be a dynasty by now!

If we use the SRPs that means we have to sign those guys right? Well... ownership probably saved some cash with that move

It has been estimated that the cash value of a second round pick is 1.8M. Of course these are probably later picks and are on the low dollar end, but it is fair to say that some 2M in future "Cash Considerations" was traded away.

That is a lot more of a loss than the increase in the rookie contract. Moving from a 25-18 range to a 15-11 range, presumably what Weltman is hoping for in this trade, will cost the Magic 500k to 1M in salary increase on the rookie scale.

All in all, this was a financial loss for Orlando. And none of us care. It's not our money!

I think that now, under new CBA, "cash considirations" trades are officially - illegal.

I may be in the minority with this opinion:

For a team that constantly punts 2nds and have a many of them, I LOVE this move. A gamble that could really pay off if the Wizards and Suns are terrible in 25-26. We already know the Wizards very likely will be, so all we need in the wheels to fall of an aging Suns team after the next two seasons.

We very well could have just given up (3) picks in the 50s to be able to swap our 2026 pick from the 20's to the lottery.

I dont think you are in the minority. We know how much sometimes trading up for even one spot costs. OKC had to take Bertans contract which was worth propably a late first. Trading 3x 50-60 when players are worse than unsigned but on lower contracts doesnt have value for us. Suns panic becouse their financial situation is very bad.

I might be off, but from where I'm sitting Weltman has found another way to get rid of 2nd round picks.

Return to Orlando Magic
