Breaking News:Magic Turn Down JR Giddens, Gabe Pruitt for JJ

Post#1 » by Cigamodnalro » Sat Jan 10, 2009 2:33 pm

What GM Danny Ainge wants is a shooter off the bench, but he’s struggling to find one. League sources say he made a bid for the Orlando Magic’s J.J. Redick recently, a guard he’s long coveted, but an offer of J.R. Giddens and Gabe Pruitt couldn’t come close to prying Redick. What’s more, Orlando isn’t motivated to fortify the Celtics. Suddenly, the Magic believe they can beat Boston. League executives say Ainge has become more persistent this week in searching out deals, but as a Western Conference executive said, “He just doesn’t have any players that anyone wants.”

FWIW, i have mixed emotions about this one. Redick is probably the best, and obviously the most seasoned, of the players in the trade. He's also playing at a high level right now, so you don't want to give him to a struggling competitor like Boston.

On the other side of the coin, Gabe Pruitt is a 6'4 Point Guard who can score in droves when he's on, is young and quick, and has potential to become a very capable backup PG with playing time. He had games with 14/7 and 14/7/12 during the preseason, when he was given minutes.

Giddens hasn't played yet this season, but he's a first round draft pick SG from 2008. Character issues may have deterred Otis.

Interesting. I like J.R. a lot and Pruitt seems like a descent prospect. I doubt either contribute this year though so good choice in knocking that one down.

The interesting part of this is that people are inquiring about JJ. Does this mean we are still shopping him and that his value is rising? If J.R. and Pruitt are still worth a late 1st and earlier 2cd respectively then giving that up for JJ must put his value as at least an early 20's pick, which is viewed as a spot to get a rotation player. So than that must mean that at least Boston and probably others view JJ as a rotation player. /amazing logic

Upon further analysis, JJ is clearly the best player in this deal. I'm glad Otis passed.

It would be nice to pick up a 6'3 or 6'4 young PG somewhere though.

I would say no. JJ is to imporant right now due to the lack of SG's the Magic have due to injuries. When Bogans and Pietrus are healthy again and if JJ is ice cold again then maybe conisder moving him, but right now the Magic have a lack of scoring off the bench and he is doing pretty good on the shooting.

Also why would Boston even think we would begin to help them out with any trades? We are competing for the top 3 spots very closely and why the heck would we supply Cleveland or Boston with another scorer. The Celtics are crazy and desperate it seems.

Glad Otis rejected this one. I like JJ more than Giddens and Pruitt, and wouldn't want to help Boston at all. Props to Otis.

Yeah, I think Otis did a good job of keeping Redick instead. On a sidenote, it's good to see Redick generating interest as well.

Some other notes on the magic and possible trades:

No tinkering planned

Magic General Manager Otis Smith said he doesn't expect there to be any shuffling on Orlando's roster prior to the Feb. 19 trade deadline.

"Probably not," Smith said. "I always look and listen, but I like the chemistry we have now."

If there is a move, it would be for a third point guard or another big man
Dwight Howard on his FT struggles:

"I just think everybody needs to stop talking about it," Howard said. "There's more to life than free throws."

Good decision Otis.

Why on earth would we even think about trading with our toughest blockade to an NBA championship? Boston obviously wants to do this because they think it would improve their team? Why would WE help improve the C's when they are our biggest blockade?

Seems like alot of Boston fans dont want Redick. Well thats all settled then neither team wants the other teams players.

boston fans just do not realize that when JJ is on his game he can shoot lights out. I am glad the trade did not go through but the next time the Magic play in Boston SVG needs to play him just to rub it in on how decent he can be.

~The Magic are playing so gosh-darn good that GM Smith would be reluctant to make any moves. For Redick, he has played very well behind Lee.

I would never trade with a potential playoff opponent anyway.

Good move Otis.

I'm all for trading JJ, and I like Giddens a little, but its a bad deal. MP and Bogans look like they might be in and out of the IR, so we needed 4 sg's after all. I'd hold out for something that makes more sense, and it surely wouldn't be to a top EC team.

Good job Otis. I still want to trade JJ but not in that deal. If Boston really wants to make a deal I'd want Leon Powe. Don't know if the numbers on this work but JJ/Cook for Powe/Pruitt. I think we would seriously have to consider something like that.

Still I highly doubt we'd want to trade w/someone who its highly likely we will play in the playoffs.

2006 NBA DRAFT: #11 JJ Redick, #21 Rajon Rondo. As such, I will accept nothing less than Rondo and a 2nd round pick for JJ. Get it done Otis!

You know why Boston offered Giddens? Is because Bill Walker is the person they are trying to devalue. I do scouting work on the side and this guy was a late lottery prospect before his multiple knee surgeries. The amazing thing is that he has recovered completely and I believe is still only 21. Think Pietrus with a higher upside or for those who haven't seen enough of Mike, think Vince Carter his rookie year.

If we could acquire Walker/Pruitt and a future 2nd I think Otis not doing this trade would be a disservce to this team. I think that he is holding out for a deal like this. I do expect him to send him West before any trade is strongly considered to championship team like Boston.
