Has the NBA ever awarded the Defensive Player of the Year to a candidate as bad as Wemby?

Because I think it's happening this year.

If a guy on the 23rd ranked defense wins DPotY, the award is dead.

Pop and the Spurs really seem to have no long term roster building plan though

Steal and blocks with no impact on winning or team performance don't mean ****.

Wemby for DPotY is just as braindead as Westbrook winning MVP in 2017.

Since when are these awards not a popularity contest or subject to agendas, like anything else that involves the national media? Since when is there some sort of exact formula to any of these awards? I've believed that any awards voted on by media have been bullschiit ever since they gave Bird the MVP in 1983-84 before the season even started because he hadn't won one yet, and completely robbed Bernard King. Nothing since then has changed that feeling.

Wemby isn't just a potentially ATG-level defensive player; he might one day become the league's best offensive player.

I wonder whether the Spurs will prioritize winning the championship, similar to their approach with Duncan, or if they will dedicate the next 3-4 seasons to helping Wemby win the MVP, similar to how the Mavericks are handling Doncic.

I saw a stat the other day where Wemby shot the second most step back 3s among Cs, with a 40% clip.

It took Embiid 6-7 years to be good at that.

Rudy Golbert should hold himself accountable for starting a global pandemic.

Admittedly have only been box score watching the Suns this season, but wtaf was that Beal trade? Did they really need to go out and get a third bucket getter only to relegate him to playing more of a point guard role which isn't his true game? Now they're gonna end up paying the guy $50-$60M/yr the next 3 seasons when they could've went out and got a real point guard for half that price and spent the difference on bolstering the full rotation.

Durant has to be pissed to find himself in another Brooklyn situation where money is allocated to 3 big fish and the rest of the roster is thin.

Never wishing injury on any player. But so many teams have injuries going into the playoffs and yet the Celtics...nothing. Except Holiday with dead arm. Dead arm what is that? It won't stop him from playing at a high level. The Celtics have had a good to great season with minimal injuries. They got rid of Robert Williams and Brogdon who have been injured. I'm jealous.

KD probably pushed for the Beal trade.

He may win it one day, but if he wins this year they really should just kill the award altogether. Attach highlights from when Embiid destroyed him on his way to 70 and lets talk.

Exactly what I thought at the time of the trade. This "three stars" thing is a bunch of garbage, especially given the hard cap now, and Beal was never on that level to begin with. I was just happy when the deal was made because it meant he wasn't coming here.

These are media awards, so right off the bat they have bias and agendas attached, and quite often they fit a narrative that the league is pushing. Wemby is seen as the "next big thing", and a DPOY as a rookie helps in selling him as just that. The award isn't for hardcore fans like those on forums like this, but casual fans will see the ESPN block highlights and think it makes total sense.

Yup. He would be the worst candidate in NBA history to receive the award.
