Did you even watch the game? The refereeing was absolutely appalling. Nobody is suggesting that's the only reason England lost the game, but it certainly didn't help their cause.

Argentina vs. Netherlands was also abysmally officiated.

those two penalties were warranted tho, it's not like they were a gift from the ref.

and right before France's first goal Saka was mugged before the counter and was missed (among many missed called by the ref), that changed the trajectory of the entire game.

and this is coming from someone that doesnt have any rooting interest in a France vs. England game.

If Brazil had won the shootout the (generally considered, not necessarily for this WC) best player on each of the semifinalists would have been from the Qatar-owned team.

Reyna didn't play much because he wasn't training hard enough.

He apologized to the rest of the team for not doing his best.

Who Scores, Wins.

England were the better team, they played the better football, they were unfortunate with the choice of referee and his decisions but football is about who scores the most goals. France did that and therefore they are, rightly, through.

Kane went from potential legend to complete bottler within a few seconds but I don't blame him for the loss. If anything he had a very good game, he was the right guy to take the kick - our penalty specialist, - he takes them well and I agree with his power into the roof style. If it had been saved by Lloris then I think Kane could have left with his head held high but a penalty taker should never miss the target. It's 12 yards from the spot to the goal, there is no defender to put the player off and he knows that any shot on target has a good chance of scoring, whilst a shot on target will never score. He's an 80+% scorer of penalties for England and he blazed it over the top with no foot slip or scuffed spot. He let the team down, but as I said he's not to blame for the loss.

Southgate left changes till late, I understand that, even if I don't agree. We were killing the French defence with players who could dribble through or run past. Saka was dominating and Rashford, who has looked great this world cup, would have done the same. i'd have brought Rashford on for foden early in the second half - proactive sub. When we were losing to then bring on Sterling and Mount and Grealish who have been miserable this competition and this season in the prem was an abomination of a choice, especially when he took Saka off. and of course how can I finish without mentioning the player who was never used, the English player with the best G/A in the Prem over the last 18 months, the in-form player who not only dribbles past players and plays great through balls but also scores. How Maddison wasn't thrown on in desperation by a manager who only plays his favourites, still amazes me. It probably wouldn't have changed anything but Mount, Grealish and Sterling were certainly NOT the answer.

So England Bottle a great chance led by the Spursiest of players (that's for you Baph ;-)) and another golden opportunity goes to waste.

England got 2 penalties from that referee and still complaining? England played better but France defeated them fair and square.

You either don't understand what I've written or are an imbecile.

I made it quite clear that France deserved their victory because they scored the most goals. That is football.

As for your comment about the referee, it is both factually wrong and stupid. The Ref gave England 1 penalty, VAR gave them the second penalty and they clearly should have had a third penalty (in reality the first) when Kane was brought down in the box. The referree had a very poor game overall and the majority of football fans have said this - not just England fans.

As a final point I didn't complain about the poor referreeing decisions. I noted them. I accept that referring is hard, subjective and the weakest point in the game of football.

I sometimes cringe at how simple so many football fans are.

Neymar has been poor during this world cup - he certainly wasn't the best player on the team.
Messi spends most of his time ambling around the pitch, he is a defensive black hole these days - he's definitely not the best player on the team any longer.
MBappe was a ghost and totally outplayed by an aging Kyle Walker - he's far from the best player on the team

Even though I expect Argentina to beat Croatia I have no doubt that Modric (37yo) will be far more influential than Messi (35yo) in the match. Modric is what Messi-fans imagine he is.

I see that Lahoz has been sent home for giving out yellow cards in that terrible Argentina match. Perhaps the Brazilian will fail to be given another match after his performance - that's for you chumbo.

With my focus shifting away from the national side and back to my club, I'll take some solace that my team finished above Messi, Neymar, Mbappé, Hakimi, and company combined.

9. Similarly, IF THOU HAST SPENT the entire offseason predicting that thy team will stink, thou shalt not gloat, nor even be happy, shouldst thou turn out to be correct. Realistic analysis is fine, but be a fan first, a smug smarty-pants second.

Also, not sure if it was a BS reddit stat, but apparently that was the record for "highest" goal scored or something lol

I know Hakimi, Messi, and Mbappe are PSG. But who is Croatia' best player that plays for a Qatari owned club?

Have another read of the single sentence you quoted... though I do think Mbappe has been the best player. His England game was quiet but not that bad. He helped set up the first goal and sucked up all the attention, and didn't do anything to screw it up.

The whole Messi vs Ronaldo stuff on Twitter is just cringe. Even from that @Troll_Fotballl who looks like a Messi fanboy.

Considering how long these two players been in the sport, I'd have to assume most of the fanboys are grown men now lol

I have nothing wrong against the debates, but the fanboyism and hating is on another level.

This might come off as fanboyism to some... I don't think CR7 is the GOAT. But I still respect his game and feel blessed I got to witness one of the greats.

Too many people taking joy in his pain. What I saw is one of the greats get emotional after a tough year (professionally and personal/family stuff), and then realizing this was probably the last time he plays for Portugal in a meaningful game.

I get emotional leaving a job I hate because I've grown attached to some of the people lol. I can't imagine the feels of knowing it's the last time you are representing your flag.

I believe it came down to the 6th criterion for tie-breaking: most away goals scored in the group.
