How well have the #4 EPL team fared in the UCL?

What percentage of the time are they getting out of the group stage?

It's nice to see this fierce battle for #4 but that club may just be a sacrificial lamb in the UCL next season?

Those teams probably fare better than you'd think.

But it's not just about how competitive you are in the tournament itself, it's about being able to attract a higher calibre of player, and big financial incentives, which in turn can lead to deeper CL runs. It's a snowball effect, or it can be, if your club is well run and savvy.

Yeah, I remember reading somewhere (This was a long time ago, so take it with a grain of salt...but then if it is true, the $$$ has only gone up) that you instantly get $20-$40 million just for being there as a club. I assume you get to keep your gate fees. You've got whatever local TV stuff you got. Jersey's, Special kits and shirts, blah blah blah.....lots of $$$. It's obviously a selling point to potential signings (as mentioned). You also have more games in which to play your squad. FA cups...CL (earlier rounds at least) are great for giving some of your bench guys some time on the pitch. This is important for deep teams. I'll see if I can dig up any current numbers for CL teams.

Here you go. It's a little convoluted, so I figure I'll just let you read it. But yeah, it's about $16-20mil (exchange rates vary) just to get in, and you get $$$ for winning group stages and less $$$ for drawing / losing group stages...but after all 6 group stages are done, you likely sitting at about $30mil. I don't think that even included TV revenue, or any "SHtuff" you sell along the way.

It tells you that Liverpool won $111million euros when they won a couple years back(included tv), and Bayern made $130.

So yeah....even if you get eliminated in the group stages, but won a game, and drew 2 others...your prob about $25mil euros. That's a decent signing right there, or the bulk of it. So it's not nothing.

I'd like to think that our (liverpool's) coffers will be pretty full after this season. Win/lose....we're in a butt-load of finals. Aughta be able to sort the Salah thing out, and hopefully another elite defender. As someone mentioned a few posts ago.....the rich get richer.

It's definitely in the tens of millions just for the share of the TV rights.

Now I think that's for the glamour clubs from the top leagues. I doubt the Russian or Turkish team that never gets out of the group stage are getting the same money that EPL clubs are getting, just because the TV money from the UK is a lot more probably.

Same thing for teams getting promoted to the EPL from the lower divisions, they have to increase their payroll but they have more money to do so, because they get a slice of the EPL TV money pie.

Of course, $30 million or even $50 million only covers the salary of a top star player or two.


As for Pool I don't know if the American owners are willing to spend like the sheiks who own City or PSG. They're looking to make profits, not spend the most.

However, Pool must be doing great in revenues, from jersey sales and other merchandise. Looks like they greatly expanded their international fan base just in the last decade, as they became a top tier club and we know about bandwagon fans.

It's ALL about being a CL team and getting the players you want, interested in playing for you.

Well City drops a couple of points, maybe they'd have dropped 3 if not for the own goal.

But Pool still needs 2 victories and hope that City don't get more than a point on their last match.

Yep, Liverpool still need to take care of their own business....and will prob be without Salah, and VVD. Not that I expect any sympathy, but you're also seeing the team playing pretty gassed at this point. Fair play to Chelsea for bringing it, but a double overtime is not what Liverpool needed with games Tues, and Sunday.

Wish MC woulda lost today, but a slip up is a slip up. We're still alive....so we fight on. Pretty exciting. Winning the quad would be pretty cool. Somehow a treble (Madrid will of course have something to say about that) just doesn't feel the same, if the prem is not included. Maybe just me....but I'd take the prem over the other 3 any day of the week......$$$$ bonus' not withstanding.

City got the result they needed, but with Fernandinho playing CB, anythings possible, they could drop the ball against Villa, not like I expect it.

Both domestic cups? Yes, I would agree with that.

However, the real debate, for me, is PL title or UCL title. I understand both sides.

Arsenal bottling top 4 is a trophy for me.

Logic would say that being European champions trumps national champions but I don't really think that's the case. Winning the league shows that you were the best over an entire season.

PL title >CL title > FA cup > League Cup

Spurs losing to Norwich and finishing 5th would be the most spursy thing to do ever. I guess Kane stays (and regrets it later) if spurs finish 4th, leaves if they finish 5th.
