Suns Could Take Unique Path at Trade Deadline
Rather than using a player, the Phoenix Suns could look to move their trade exception gained from the Cameron Payne deal.

PHOENIX -- As the NBA's Feb. 8 trade deadline crawls closer, you'll see plenty of trade talk around the league - and the Phoenix Suns are no exception.

Currently sitting at 27-20 on the year, Phoenix has shaken their early season injury woes and have bounced back as of late after winning their last eight-of-ten.

Their star trio of Bradley Beal, Kevin Durant and Devin Booker continues to find continuity on the court while various role players shuffle for positioning in the rotation come playoff time.

Thanks to their positioning in the luxury tax and lack of draft capital, the Suns don't exactly have a lot of wiggle room when it comes to trade resources.

Phoenix has reportedly been shopping Nassir Little and a handful of second-round picks they still own, though ESPN's Brian Windhorst suggested the team could look to take a different route.

In his article going through each team's most likely player to be dealt, the Suns didn't have a player listed, but rather the $6.5 million trade exception acquired in the Cameron Payne trade over the summer from the San Antonio Spurs. "The Suns can't trade any first-round picks, plus they have a full roster, very limited trade options and a $50 million tax bill. But owner Mat Ishbia is very aggressive, and the front office is creative," wrote Windhorst.

In short, the $6.5 million exception can theoretically represent the salary of a player in a trade and can be combined with picks/cash/players so long as Phoenix has an open roster spot.

The exception will expire at the end of this season - so the Suns would need to use it by the trade deadline. It's not often you see NBA trades with exceptions included, though it's a unique way for teams deep in the luxury tax to navigate the trade market.

Phoenix has to like the overall upward trend of play from their roster now that they're finally healthy, though it will be interesting to see if changes are made to the lineup before the end of next week.

More on who the Suns could target at the deadline:

PHOENIX -- The Phoenix Suns are on a roll, having won their last seven games approaching tonight's contest against the Indiana Pacers.

Though they continue to climb up the Western Conference standings, the Suns are also actively searching for ways to improve their squad in the trade market.

As the Feb. 8 deadline approaches, deals around the league are slowly beginning to heat up.

Yahoo! NBA insider Jake Fischer revealed the following about the Suns and who they are targeting:

"Phoenix only has second-round capital at its disposal, plus Nassir Little and his four-year, $28 million contract, to consider for legitimate upgrades, as Phoenix appears intent on keeping Grayson Allen," wrote Fischer.

"While the Suns were once considered primarily shopping for guards – and they remain connected to players in that salary range such as Delon Wright and Monte Morris, sources said – the Suns now seem to be generally looking at various rotation-level players, ranging from Jae’Sean Tate to Royce O’Neale, sources said, to Miles Bridges and Charlotte teammate Nick Richards." Arizona Sports insider John Gambadoro added on Twitter/X the Suns are indeed interested in acquiring O'Neale.

There's been plenty of talk surrounding what Phoenix could possibly maneuver in the trade market given their lack of resources and capital. Allen projects as the biggest trade chip, though the Suns appear to be much better off keeping him in the lineup.

Allen said he'd like to stick around, too.

That sure is a lot of words to say we have a few trade exceptions and they could be an option lol 8-)

If Suns pick up Royce O’Neale we are winning a championship this season. He’s a perfect fit for our team. Make it happen Matt and Zeek! I trust them to make the right decision as they have done so repeatedly.

Even when healthy, Bradley Beal shooting 34% from 3 on very wide open looks has been so disappointing. He’s shooting the same % from 3 as Okogie did for the Suns last season lol.

Teams have been daring him to shoot with doubles on Booker/KD and he’s been straight bricks especially in the 4th qtr.

He’s shooting 71% from the FT line too which is disgusting for a SG making $50M/yr. Same % this season as Okogie who’s on a vet min contract lol.

I don’t understand how he’s this bad when he was supposed to be a floor spacer.

I'm relatively optimistic our team can be competitive and has potential for a deep run but I'm staying far away from thinking any one piece will win us a championship. I think O'Neal would be a fine fit but I also don't think he solves that many issues. He certainly wouldn't help much with our 4th quarter woes, I think he can help defensively because his shooting will allow him to stay on the floor for longer (unlike JO) but I really don't think he's going to move the championship need all that much if I'm being honest.

I've mentioned it before but he's also like barely taller than Okogie, with a shorter wingspan and also overall smaller than Little. Let's just say, it's better than no additions but I can't see how adding him greatly improves our championship odds.

Yeah!......lol. So to basically summarize:

The latest news is that there's really no news (aside from the timely info that Sabrestar has already shared). BUT the lack of content is hurting the nba analysts and they need some filler articles. Even if it's already known content.

Read on Twitter

The league and players union learned from the famous cap spike of 2016. That had a lot of unintended consequences, with the Golden State Warriors gaining the flexibility to sign Kevin Durant and a lot of teams handing out what proved to be bad contracts.
With the NBA heading toward a new media rights deal, many wondered whether a similar shock to the system was in store at some point.

The newest collective bargaining agreement addressed that question, stipulating the salary cap can't increase by more than 10 percent from year to year.

From the team side, front offices have an easier time building out a roster and knowing how much money might be available in the future. General managers will know there isn't a major windfall to come. Players benefit as well even if cap smoothing means there's theoretically less money than there would be otherwise. Those who hit free agency in 2016 cashed out, but those who came after suffered because teams had little to no cap space moving forward.

History almost certainly would've repeated itself with another spike.

With max salaries now eclipsing $50 million, stars at the top end will be doing just fine with the more incremental increases to the cap.

In other Nets news, rival executives who’ve spoken with HoopsHype believe Brooklyn could potentially garner multiple second-round picks in exchange for Royce O’Neale.

Those same executives believe Brooklyn could garner a first-round pick and a rotation player for Dorian Finney-Smith should the Nets move the coveted veterans.

https://hoopshype.com/lists/nba-trade-deadline-rumors-knicks-clippers-jazz-rockets-hawks-nets-wizards/

Royce O'Neale looks perfect for what we are looking for and what we have available for a trade.

C'mon man. You know better than to criticize Beal here... he's well worth his contract! I mean as long as Shamet is gone right? Don't talk bad about Mr. Beal. Don't you see how much flexibility we have for trades now? Not like we could've gotten Rozier or anything.

I am convince that if you have 2 max players on your roster that it will be enough. Use the money to make the roation deeper and get more flexible and movable contracts.
Young pieces are always in demand just as draft picks. packaging them for an aging star has not worked for anyone as far as i can remember

Since 2000 championships won after a big ticket acquisition:

Lakers/Shaq, 3
Pistons/Rasheed 1
Heat/Shaq 1
Celtics/KG 1
Lakers/Gasol 2
Heat/LeBron 2
GS/KD 2
Raptors/Leonard 1
Lakers/AD 1
Bucks/Holliday 1

15 of the 23 chips won after a significant move sending picks/young players

And that's not counting things like the Aaron Gordon trade that cost a decent amount and he was their 3rd best player. Or GS trading Ellis for Bogut for their early championships. Or Dallas acquiring Kidd and Chandler who were key parts of that chip.

Bold moves don't always work but not making them has a pretty bad track record of championships too.

Yes there are several examples of big deals not working out, multiple teams try it but only one gets to actually win a championship each year.

Shaq was 24yo when he joined the Lakers and won all his titles before 35. Then we know which team traded for him and how it ended. Suns paid for KD like he was 24yo. That's why we are in current no assets situation and looking more like a pretender than a real contender.

I don't get why do you think that we overpaid for KD.

Mikal and Cam Johnson are on the Nets and what are they doing?? Cam Johnson is overpaid for real and Mikal is good but not THAT good... we are talking about Kevin freaking Durant. The trade was great for us and I would do it 100 consecutive times.

The picks are a mystery yet but Ishbia is really invested in this team so we are not gonna be one of the worst teams in the next future at all. Those picks are gonna be mostly in the 20s, not a big deal.

1) Beal is shooting 35% from three, not 34%. There are rules to round off numbers.

2) He was shooting 38% from three just before his 2 mask games.

He struggled badly with the mask in Orlando (0/5) because he literally couldn't see the rim but he was already much better in the custom black mask in the last one against the Heat (2/9).

11 years in the league and everyone knows how great of a shooter he is... it's just a matter of time for him. He will average over 80% from the FT line before the end of the RS.

It was a clear overpay for a 35 yo injury prone player and you have agreed in that KD trade thread. But even if no overpay this team still looks a lot more like that old KG/Pierce Nets team than any other team mentioned above. Far from writing them off, but a lot of things need to go right to win a championship with this roster. Most importantly staying healthy and start playing like a team.

The picks are a mystery yet but Ishbia is really invested in this team so we are not gonna be one of the worst teams in the next future at all. Those picks are gonna be mostly in the 20s, not a big deal.

Agreed - clear overpay. Not necessarily the players, but the picks attached. In theory (according to fairly credible sources) we almost had a deal with less picks and minus Crowder. We might have had it if Ish doesn't interfere - he lost the game of chicken, or just got trigger happy, or greedy as he did not want to wait for the offseason. Clear mistake. Had we retained Crowder and picks we'd be in a fairly good situation just about now to upgrade our roster with that pick or the picks/player we could have gotten for Crowder. And that my friend might just be what seperates us from a chip.

For you it was still overpay, for most everybody else it was a clear overpay.

It was a massive overpay. Those assests could've been used to get someone younger and who would fit next to Booker for the next 10+ years.

I have found my first comment when the trade was made:

I love the trade.

I voted B in the poll because we gave up too many unprotected picks. One less would have been nice...
