Josh Okogie news, discussion and highlights.
I really like this signing.
No risk at all because it's just a one year deal for the minimum and this guy can defend for sure.
He isn't too far away from becoming one of the best perimeter defenders in the NBA, he is strong and has a dog mentality.
He lost his spot on the rotation last year on the Wolves but in the three years before he showed that he belongs to this league.
He can play minutes at 2/3 because he is long (7'00" wingspan) and loves to play physical, I think he makes our team more versatile on defense.

Just posted about him in the offseason thread. If we manage to keep Bridges, then a Bridges + Okogie lineup at the wing with KD at C will absolutely wreak havoc on the perimeter.

BTW, Josh Okogie is represented by Klutch Sports Management and that means that we are finally OK with signing players from there. Nice.

Any idea why he didn't play much this past season? He went from about 20-25mpg his first 3 seasons with the Wolves to only 10mpg.
Just got pushed further down on the depth chart?

Malik Beasley too. Plus when they were bad they would play their young development guys more but they were fighting for a playoff spot.

As long as they're not stars and are low salary players desperate for contracts.

Has similar shooting numbers to Elfrid Payton's career so would have to be a niche defensive specialist, if he can improve his 3 point shooting to 33%+ he could get regular playing time.

Re: Josh Okogie news, discussion and highlights.
So I like Okogies' relentless energy on the defensive end. That's something our team and especially our bench has really lacked. Having said that, I'm still really much of the mind that I'd also like to add Jared Vanderbilt under the same premise to be utilized in mismatches as an oversized small forward, or undersized 4/5. But I believe he could create an ideal high-energy, relentless disruptive defensive duo alongside of Okogie off the bench. Especially IF we send out Bridges in any Durant framework. Vanderbilt would also greatly improve and shore up our rebounding deficiencies, and upgrade our deflections, steals and even weakside rim protection in a multipositional defensive role to complement our scorers off the bench. As our team elevates itself competitively with elite star-level players functioning in elite roles. We'll of course also need role players with potentially elite complimentary singular skillsets to support our star players in a supplementary role.
We've seen some highlights of Okogies' potential in a defensive playmaking role. But now here's a glimpse of Vanderbilts' complimentary defensive playmaking/ rebounding role as a big.
And Vanderbilt as an elite rebounder in the Dennis Rodman archetype.

He's 6'8 with a 7'3 wingspan and a nonstop relentless motor. There's a reason his nickname is V8. He's high-speed, relentless, and never stops. We could definitely use his elite rebounding and disruptive defensive playmaking off our bench.
Defense on Brandon Ingram (Held Ingram to 9 points).

Defense on Kevin Durant

He'd be a great under-the-radar pickup in a trade with the Jazz. Or coming back in a multi-team trade for Durant.

Since November 17th, Jarred Vanderbilt is ninth in the NBA in rebounds per game while playing fewer minutes than anyone ahead of him. He’s also the No. 1 offensive rebounder in the NBA over the last month, grabbing 4.1 offensive boards per game.
He’s tied at 6th in the league with Rudy Gobert — the three-time Defensive Player of the Year — in total offensive rebounds in 2021-22. He also checks in at 13th in total rebound percentage and eighth in offensive rebound percentage. And he’s top 20 in defensive rebounding percentage as well.
Without a doubt, Jarred Vanderbilt is one of the best offensive rebounders in the NBA, and one of the best all-around board-grabbers in the world. That was always his best skill and he’s finally capitalizing on it.

Wolves fan and Okogie fan here. I don’t have league pass so I wanted to check with you guys to see how Josh is doing? I noticed he hasn’t played many minutes. Any chance he cracks your rotation? I am really hoping he gets an opportunity with you guys.

I was an Okogie fan watching from afar so naturally I was a fan of the signing. I loved the idea of him teaming up with Mikal to be an absolute defensive nightmare but the fact that he can't shoot makes the prospect of him breaking into the rotation difficult. It will take an injury for him to get decent minutes.

It is not looking good for him because he is currently our 12th man in the rotation.
Shamet and Lee are our SG/SF backups and both are playing pretty well.
He needs to improve his 3p shooting.

He was out of the rotation but he has been playing consistent minutes for the last 7 games.
10.7 points, 5.9 boards , 2.6 assists and 1.3 steals in those games.
He has been impressive on defense and rebounding.

Shooting from 3 at a serviceable overall clip of....37.5% over his last 7 games (since he's gotten 20+ minutes).
It was definitely helped by a game where he went 4/6, but if we can keep this up or even improve.....this is a major find.
A super athletic 3 n D player, who can finish and block shots?
He's a poor man's mix of Gerald Wallace and James Posey, which as the 7th or 8th player in the rotation, will be a valuable piece in the playoffs.
