They did something similar for collegiate wrestling and it did cause big changes. But they have a whole program in place that lets them tests wrestlers at the beginning of the year and give them a limit how much they can cut and (at least theoretically) the infrastructure in place to monitor that they don't use methods of weight cutting that are against the rules. MMA doesn't have that.

Uh, okay...

Anderson Silva defense: 'Sexual performance' medication tainted drug test

"The Spider" tested positive for drostanolone metabolites twice -- once the day of his Jan. 31 fight against Nick Diaz and in an out-of-competition, Jan. 9 test. Silva also tested positive for androstane, another banned substance, in the random, pre-fight test.

Silva's lawyer Michael Alonso writes in the complaint that Silva was "administering or using a supplement for the purpose of enhancing sexual performance and testing of the supplement revealed that the supplement was contaminated with an Exogenous Anabolic Agent: Drostanolone metabolite."

Alonso also wrote that another supplement Silva was taking could have contained androstane.

Silva's defense against the NAC will also contain inconsistencies in drug tests, including two tests -- one pre-fight and one post-fight -- that Silva passed. The NAC did not include in its initial complaint the post-fight test that Silva had passed, according to the complaint.

Nick Diaz suspended five years for failed UFC 183 drug test

The Nevada Athletic Commission finally had enough of Nick Diaz. In a shocking decision, Nevada commissioners voted Monday to levy an unprecedented five-year suspension on the outspoken UFC contender, stemming from a failed post-fight drug test on Jan. 31 at UFC 183.

The suspension, retroactive to fight night, was passed unanimously at a hearing in Las Vegas. Diaz was also fined $150,000 -- 33-percent of his $500,000 UFC 183 fight purse.

Nevada commissioners pointed to Diaz's status as a repeat offender when discussing the severity of their punishment. Diaz tested positive for marijuana use in Nevada in both 2007 and 2012.

This is some BS.

Under the proposed amendments to the NAC drug code, which go into effect later this year and were not valid at the time of Diaz's fight, a third-time positive test for marijuana metabolites would constitute a three-year suspension....

Diaz, 32, submitted three samples on the night of Jan. 31, one prior to his fight against Anderson Silva (administered at 7:12 p.m.), and two in the hours afterward (administered at 10:38 p.m. and 11:55 p.m.).

Of those three samples, the first and the third were administered under Wada Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) protocol and submitted for testing to the WADA-accredited Sports Medicine Research and Testing Laboratory (SMRTL) in Salt Lake City, UT. Both of those tests came back clean.

The 10:38 p.m. test, however, was administered by a separate testing representative and submitted to Quest Diagnostics, a non-WADA accredited lab in New Jersey. That test came back over the threshold for allowable marijuana metabolites, resulting in the lone positive test.

The ‘B' sample for the Quest result was never quested for testing.

Non-accredited test, doesn't even check the B-sample? Two test by WADA clean...

Maybe USADA can give him a "retroactive" TUE, Floyd style.

Whole system is a joke. It is even for Olympic testing, though America's most popular sport is probably even worse.

My mind is blown. 3 yrs for roids (Schlemenko) but 5 yrs weed? A natural herb that provides no performance enhancement is going to cost Diaz 5 years?

It can increase lung capacity, but still BS that it's even banned. My issue is that they can't tell when it was used in any of their tests... a 5 year suspension and they can't tell how much or when?

Guess he should had used the Vitor strategy:

He could have read a letter promising his next fight would be in Vegas, like Vitor Belfort did during his second PED bust, and maybe gotten some leniency.

IDK if this is the correct thread for this but did anyone see Diaz refer to his "dirty bjj coach" or some such?

Henry Cejudo refuses to fight in Nevada in light of Nick Diaz's suspension

Really think this is interesting, can't remember off hand a fighter taking a stand (or saying they will anyways) like that for another fighter.

edit: just beaten to the trigger there.

Anyways, is it really this hard to drug test people?

Pedro Munhoz returns against Jimmie Rivera after bizarre drug suspension

The fight will mark the return of Munhoz after a controversial drug test result in his last bout. The Black House bantamweight, who stopped Sanders in 39 seconds last October at Nova Scotia’s UFC Fight Night 54, was suspended after failing a post-fight drug test, even though the drug test results were never announced by the UFC or the local athletic commission.

As first reported by MMAFighting.com in July, Munhoz tested positive for elevated levels of testosterone, but claimed his levels were not above the limit. The fighter hired a specialist, who believed the Nova Scotia Boxing Authority made several mistakes during the process.

"We called a specialist, Paul Scott, and the commission couldn’t explain why my levels were high," Munhoz said in July. "We asked the commission for documents, explaining what happened, and it took them three months to send them to me. They sent us a 150-page file, and we gave it to Paul Scott. He examined the entire thing and said ‘This is a joke, it’s all wrong’.

"The testosterone levels can go from 300 to 1100, and my level was at 850. That’s in the limit. ‘Oh, but your last test from Las Vegas was at 410, and you’re at 850 this time,' they said. But that’s not above the limit. And everything can change your testosterone level, even if you didn’t sleep properly, if you had sex, or if you took supplements. I was using two supplements, Vitrix and ZMA, and both are legal. I always ask the UFC before taking anything, and they told me I was allowed to use them."

However, Nova Scotia Boxing Authority chairman Michael MacDonald told MMAFighting.com at the time that the UFC was the one who collected the sample and had it tested at a lab in Las Vegas.

"(The UFC) kind of run the show," MacDonald said. "We're just there for the protection and of the fighters and to make sure the rules and regulations are followed. These guys, they have a well-oiled machine. They're doing this all over the world. They're very, very competent."

Almost two months after the first report was published, the UFC never addressed the situation. Booked to fight on Nov. 7, Munhoz told MMAFighting.com his suspension was "cancelled," but sources with knowledge of the situation confirmed the fighter is currently serving a one-year suspension until Oct. 4.

So Mitrione is blasting Hughes for calling Nick a punk after this whole thing. Mitrione calls him out saying he is supposed to be a liaison for the fighters and shouldn't be publicly bashing Nick.

Couldn't agree more tbh, Hughes should GTFO.

You think it's unprofessional (given him being the liaison) or just douchey?
