Re: WON 2019 Awards

Post#2 » by Spens1 » Fri Mar 6, 2020 2:47 am

My thoughts, Jericho as wrestler of the year is pretty bad given he didn't wrestle for like half of it other than New Japan (and he had a pretty average main event at dominion in that first half, the Naito match at WK was more of a brawl than anything). As a promo on the other hand, i agree he's by far the best on the mic. That still doesn't make up for his in ring work however.

Ospreay as most outstanding makes sense cause the only one who came close is Takagi in my opinion (so him at 4th was ridiculous) top 5 was all New Japan wrestlers which was a surprise though (thought Gargano would have gotten in that top 5 and Miyahara really should have but the lack of exposure to All Japan must have hurt, also he has no opponents since Uncle Jun has put him over everyone).

Tag team of the year was a bit of a surprise i guess, Promotion of the year was not cause after a pretty mediocre 2018 (at least by New Japan standards) 2019 was a fantastic rebounding year, obviously the first half was shakey cause Omega leaving messed up the main event scene which only really came right i'd say around MSG.

Dynamite as the best show of 2019, i mean it only started at the end of the year so it shouldn't count. By the way, NXT was 2nd and Powerr surprisingly came 3rd (Which is good cause its a really good show for what it is).

MOTY is no surprise cause nothing really came close to be honest for the calander year though Tanahashi vs Omega came a close 2nd in the voting (no idea how, it was really good but not even close to the quality that was the BOSJ finals).

Archer for most improved is abundantly clear, he's come leaps and bounds this year, going from tag team guy to good solid mid to upper mid card wrestler.

Most charismatic being Jericho isn't something i can disagree with (though Naito over Cody for sure and i'd argue Miyahara should be higher than Naito)

For best non wrestler, i'd honestly choose Salina Del La Renta, her managerial stuff in MLW has been absolute gold, she's a brilliant manager and she's only in her early 20's which makes it all the more frightening.

My answer for worst will always be Micheal Cole but Graves has been insufferable this last year.

I'm sorry the Dome was better than DON (hell, i'd say Revolution ended up being a better show than DON as it is).

Best TV announcer being Kevin Kelly is no surprise

As for worst show, CMLL anniversary show was something else in terms of just being bad, i think the lack of exposure to the western audience may have saved it here but that and the Saudi show were something else.

Raw is the worst tv show this last year (though now smackdown is worse since Pritchard took over).

WWE won worst promotion which is no surprise since the main roster is insipid (ROH was 2nd, Impact somehow came 3rd despite being pretty good)

Gedo winning best booker is right to be honest given the mess he had to get himself out of though if things continue, i'd imagine Khan will be in the conversation this time next year, Khan as best promoter is very fair cause AEW has far exceeded any expectations it had going in.

I'd actually have Orange Cassidy as best gimmick but maybe that's just because they've botched the Fiend recently.

Worst Gimmick belongs to Shorty G of course, Chad Gable needs to leave the company badly.

Also ZSJ and ishii winning best technical and best brawler. That's fair (though maybe i'd have given Shingo best brawler instead)

This is always interesting to read thanks for posting. To be honest I've never looked at their yearly awards
before and usually am just interested in the news they break over their opinions.

Is there any right or wrong answers to these? I mean wrestling is subjective art and we all like different styles
and have a different criteria. Putting a list like these out is like debating music. I think HHH said it best it's
like ask someone to put a list of their top 10 wrestlers together or their top 10 matches and everybodys list
will be different but usually there is a lot of the same top stuff just in different order.

I think one thing that needs to be considered is wrestlers in Japan have an advantage where they get to
work a style that produces the best match quality where WWE they are historically handcuffed and also
have to tone back because of their crazy schedule. Also wrestlers in Japan can get penalized for lack
of mic skills because of the language barrier and sometimes subtittles don't do them justice and a lot of
them don't get the character development that WWE guys get.

I find it next to impossible to keep up with everything hell I just watched MLW for the first time yesterday. I only
watch Japan for the big PPVs like Wrestle Kingdom and G1 and a few select others. So it would be hard for me to
rate them accurately.

Also guys like Meltzer and Alvarez like a certain style of wrestling and hate another. Where I can appreciate the
beauty of a Okada vs. Naito match and can also love the beauty of a Question Mark? vs. Ziggy Dice match on NWA Power
which are 2 complete opposites of the spectrum.

I'd love to read other peoples lists there is no right or wrong answers I'll probably post mine late after thinking about it,

There are of course no right or wrong answer, wrestling is subjective and depending on what you consume will of course alter your point of view (there is only 24 hours of the day after all, its impossible to watch all wrestling out there).

Yeah I just hate giving out awards where I haven't watched much Japanese wrestling because it's the only one I
don't get on TV and I have to look up matches on Youtube and usually I'm to lazy. Plus Mexican wrestling is really
good and slept on and usually my only exposure to it is when Mexican wrestlers work in the U.S. and Japan.
Also are promotions like Evolve even on TV? they must at least be on Youtube.

As for Meltzer and Alvarez eveyone knows they are so biased and love the Japanese style and despise WWE. They
also have a good relationship with all the top guys in AEW and they even showed Meltzer and Alvarezs quotes on
Dynamite putting over their matches so it's hard for me to take anyone who's completely biased seriously.

So I love hearing peoples lists just want to make sure they're calling it 50/50 and are upfront with what they
watch and don't watch. But yeah these lists are so hard to make because it's almost impossible to watch
everything on a week to week basis where it's easy to make a list for NBA players or baseball players etc.

Yeah watching Mexican Wrestling can be a real pain honestly.

I wouldn't say they despise WWE (at least Meltzer doesn't, in fact sometimes he's far too kind, Alvarez is another story). Keller usually is better i'd say. Anyway these are fan voted (so fans of the observer so its probably more pro AEW and anti-wwe).
