Jalen Williams, Santa Clara

Post#1 » by Hal14 » Thu Mar 24, 2022 3:17 am

Arguably the most underrated prospect in the 2022 draft class.

This is the direction the NBA has been headed towards. Guys like this. Guys who are like 6'6" or 6'7", who can defend multiple positions and do a lot of different things on offense too.

Williams actually played PG for Santa Clara this season. So while he projects best in the NBA as a wing, he can be a secondary ball handler out there for you. Ends the season with 50/40/80 shooting splits.

Just the versatility, the ability to handle the ball, see the whole floor, make sick passes, shoot the ball really well, make some crafty moves off the dribble, at 6'6" with a strong frame. Still only 20 yrs old.

Honestly, if you don't see him as a 1st round prospect, I'd love to hear why. and if you've got Beauchamp ranked higher, I'd love to hear why. williams and beauchamp look pretty similar at first glance just in terms of size/build, hairdo and the way they move on the court. beauchamp is only 6 months younger. Williams much better shooter, much better passer. They're comparable defensively IMO. I'd draft williams over beauchamp in 10 times out of 10. Yet you look at mock drafts and rankings out there. Beauchamp is way higher in them, many of them have beauchamp as a top 15-20 pick, some even have him lottery while pretty much no one even has williams getting drafted - what am I missing here?

I absolutely love J. Williams and have zero idea why he isn't a FRP. The only thing I can think of is he's an "older player" and played for a small school.

Yup. That's all i can think of too. Older prospect (although not THAT old since he's still just 20), small school and he kind of came out of nowhere this season as a junior - didn't have much buzz about him until just the last couple of months..

Hopefully it means he falls to my Celtics in the 2nd round.

are we sure Jalen isn't better than Johnny Davis? Are we sure Jalen isn't a lottery pick?

I was right about 3 point shooting. I expect to be right about Tacko Fall. Some coach will figure out how to use Tacko Fall. This movement towards undersized centers will sweep ng back. Back to the basket scorers will return to the NBA.

Looks like he needs a more compact release on the jumper, but otherwise, those highlights absolutely look like an NBA player. Strong gather, competent dribbling and finishing with both hands in traffic. I see his defense is praised, but has anybody scouted him for it? Could he play against NBA 3s?

I missed both games SC played against USF, unfortunately. Shoulda had my eye on this dude.

Reminds me of a likable prospect at the time in Josh Howard. JW doesn't scream all star or anything but he can have a long career.

I was pretty early on the hype train, but I'm getting off with that max vertical. He doesn't access that at all.

Wait I'm confused how testing really well in the vertical makes you like him less as a prospect? Thats fine if you don't think he has/will utilize it, but why be a fan before the testing but not after?

I wouldn't say that I like him less, I'm just selling. I'm out.

Is that due to potential draft position now (late lotto to 20s)? Because that makes sense to me. I've been a JW Stan before Tankathon had him on a mock. For me, I'd start drafting him @ pick 20

That's reasonable. I think the lottery is unreasonable. He probably has the most unutilized vertical leap that I've seen in a basketball player. With his arm length he should look like a Kobe, Vince, or Paul George dunking the basketball.

You're not wrong there, but I wouldn't move him down my board just because of that. In his highlight tapes he has a few nasty dunks, but not as many as I'd like to see from a dude with his athletics. To contrast tho, his floater/contested shot game in the paint area is pretty pretty good.

What about a stronger Tyreke Evans? IDK where to place him.

Maybe similar. For recent draftees I'd say he's very close to Ayo from last year.

LOL I'm back in! I just looked at his game against Gonzaga, he isolated on Chet Holmgren and dropped him. Gotta love the underdog going against the potential #1 overall pick.
