Sonic Boom: Best Sonics Dunk EVER?

Post#1 » by lethalweapon3 » Sat Aug 23, 2008 6:44 pm

The would-be nominees that jump out in my mind are Reign Man on Rodman, X-Man On Trent Tucker, The Lister Blister, and that 540 by Terence Stansbury in the Dunk Contest ('87?). Is there a jam by somebody like Tom Chambers (Sonics uniform), D-Mase or Ruben Patterson that's worthy of nomination?

Shawn Kemp over Alton Lister, then Shawn points down at Lister as he lays on the floor.

Best. Dunk. Ever.

Agreed about the Lister dunk...that one sticks out in the memory of every Sonic fan, I think.

For the ones I noted, it oughta save a little time:

Kemp reignin' down on the Rainbow Man:

The Lister Blister:

Stansbury's Spin-and-a-quarter (more of a 450 than a 540), about 28 seconds in:

Couldn't dig up X on Tucker(March 1989) because it WASN'T Trent Tucker (sorry Trent), it was Johnny Newman, second dunk on this clip after Barkley's. Apparently was a payback dunk similar to DWade vs. Carney last year.

One other name that popped up from the 70's-80's, if someone recalls any good nominees from them, were "Jammin'" James Bailey and Derrick McKey.

Here is a top ten Kemp dunks. In #2 Perkins kills me after Kemo dunks and Perkins almost looks like he is tip toeing off. #3 is prety sweet as well. You almost forget how quick and powerful Kemp was in his heyday.

One I can't seem to find is the one where I believe they were playing the Warriors and Payton tossed an alley-oop up in traffic off the backboard and Kemp had to go over 2-3 people to get it. I am not sure he even made the shot but I remember Karl getting pissed that they were showboating.

I thought of the dunk over Rodman first, but the double clutch, reverse through the lane over Smith and the Knicks is just unbelievable.

Sonichound, I think that dunk's in the top ten video.

Here's one somebody just posted from the 1987 Playoffs, Chambers on JR Reid and1, giving the Sonics the lead in Overtime with about 15 secs left. Reid's on the ground like, "Whut Happuned???"

Ranks right up there as Kemp's personal best-ever, and that's even crazier since it went down in High School!

I can't argue with any of the Kemp dunks he is in a class by himself, but I remember a couple sweet dunks by Desmond Mason.

I loved the "Batman Dunk" against the Hornets. The Sonics were down late and they kept fouling Baron Davis and he kept shooting brick after brick from the line and the Sonics managed to claw their way back into it. I think Payton missed the game winning shot attempt but Lewis and a Hornet went up for the rebound and out of no where Mason comes flying in over everyone and packs it for the win. Lewis was quoted saying something like, he felt he really got up for the rebound and was shocked that Mason flew in over him like Batman.

Another Mason dunk I loved was when I first started to date my wife. I was with her and a guy she worked with at a local club, and I could tell the guy liked my wife. Again the Sonics where down late. Something like 13 pts with 2 minutes left, againts the Clippers. This guys starts razzing me how the Sonics suck and the game is over. Of course me being the diehard I am I keep telling him it's not done yet. I think a couple three balls from GP and Bones made the game a lot closer. Somehow the Sonics were tied or down by one with around a second on the clock. Nate runs an inbounds play for Mason. Barry inbounds the ball. He throws the ball up in the paint from the sideline Mason simply jumps over everyone and dunks it for the win. I'm freaking out my wife is freaking out and this dude who was trying to cruise my wife can't believe it and I of course I let him know "it's not over tell it's over baby".

And unfortunately for me it's over with the Sonics.

Shawn Kemp destroying Alton Lister is one of the really SICK moments in NBA life. The dunk alone is GOAT stuff, but the finishing touch is that two-finger taunt at Lister, who is lying on his back like an overturned turtle.
