I’m glad he addressed the rollover part, because I couldn’t find anything post 2026 anywhere when I looked.

it rolls over to 2025 with the same top-six protection, and then again to 2026 before becoming two second rounders in 2027 if it still hasn’t conveyed by then.

But I’m also confused. I don’t think we have two second rounders in 2027. How the heck does that work?

There are apparently some front offices that think the highest picks are worse because of the rookie scale is so high up there. But I’m sure that isn’t a universal opinion.
To me I’d rather keep the pick because of the better outlook (even if delusional) it would provide. I don’t think this organization(or board) needs the perception of an L right now.

The purpose of the lottery itself is to determine the order of the top 4 picks. Theoretically...any of the teams in the top 14 could jump into the top 4. So the only situations we keep our pick are if we jump into the top 4 or stay at #6.

Well, it's the lottery balls of fate day. After going back and forth many times throughout the year, here's where I think I'm at right now.

I'm hoping for either the 1st or 2nd pick, or that we convey to San Antonio now and move forward with a clean slate.

Masai indicated an inclination for being patient at his end of season presser. So with no-one at the top of this draft looking like an impact player, it makes more sense to keep our options open for next year. If injuries hit us again, we can tank an assure ourselves of a top 10 pick in a very strong year.

Also, this will be the last opportunity to have cap space until at least 2027. Not the greatest FA class, but there are some interesting guys or we could use it to acquire more picks by accepting bad contracts from tax teams - the way OKC did. That would be consistent with Masai's new-found patience. Drafting some version of Andre Roberson or TJ McConnell in the top 6 and paying them 7-10 mill next season basically takes away that option.

Admittedly, if we move up to the top 3, it will make the draft (and the period leading up to it) more exciting. And if the scouts have identified another Scottie among this trash, it will undoubtedly be better for the team going forward. But the odds are against it.

As a refresher, in 2019 the NBA changed the lottery system – flattening out the odds and drawing for the top-four picks (instead of the top three). That means the Raptors will lose their pick if even one team with seventh or worse odds move up, something that’s happened in four of five years since the format change.

From 2019 to 2022, the team with the seventh-best odds moved into the top four, including Toronto in 2021 when it selected Barnes fourth overall. In 2020, Charlotte also moved up, going from ninth to third. In 2019, three teams moved up – New Orleans from seventh to first, Memphis from eighth to second, and the Lakers from 11th to fourth. The team with the sixth-best odds has yet to move up under the new format, so maybe it’s due?

I purposely didn’t deep dive into this year’s draft class because of the uncertainty involving this pick. Which has made me more open to the thought of losing the pick. For most of the year I’ve been one of those people that said we could be bad enough to get a top 4 pick both years. But next year’s draft class I know a lot more about and I’d be livid if we had like the 7th overall pick that year and we lost it to the spurs.

I’m leaning towards conveying it but if we get like a top 2 pick or something I obviously wouldn’t be mad.
