As far as I know, Porter checked out of two games he played in order to win bets. That is incredibly serious and the league rightfully did something about it. Not sure where the hypocrisy is.

Read the article. It's about how Silver began promoting gambling connection with the league starting in 2014. It's not saying Jontay is innocent.

Geez. MPJ's younger brother Coban just got sentenced 6 years in jail for fatal DUI crash, just days of Jontay's ban from the NBA.

I don't get where the hypocrisy is either.

It would be one thing if the NBA cracked down on Porter for making sports bets in general, but he was doing more than that. He was rigging the bets.

The hypocrisy is having your major sponsorship partners being the gambling industry. Regardless of what happened to Jontay, the NBA is contributing to the creation of problem gamblers and most likely future homeless people. Then they are surprised that an NBA player got hooked. You don't gamble away an NBA future if you aren't seriously hooked on gambling.

I thought it was bad enough seeing scalpers logos on jerseys, but this is just too far. I'm glad our championship was not tainted.

So no hypocrisy would be letting Jontay rig bets with no consequences? The more apt term would be slippery slope and you're assuming he didn't have this problem prior to making the NBA.

No hypocrisy would mean not allowing gambling companies as partners and even owners in the league - casino owners just bought the Mavericks. If the NBA doesn’t want its players associated with gambling, they should stay far away from those companies. It’s not like the league depends on those partnerships, it’s just greed.

Or sure, no hypocrisy could look like partnering with gambling companies and then letting the players gamble on the product. That would sacrifice some of the sport’s entertainment value and lead to a lot of upset gamblers, obviously.

I wouldn't call it hypocrisy but I do think the recent unprecedented spike in sports betting is troubling.

At TSN....like 1/4 of our hourly sports news coverage is now in-show advertising for betting companies. We are running what are essentially commercials for betting companies DURING the content. It used to be a policy that we wouldn't even give coverage to betting odds. Now it's become a paid-for, significant part of the content

The CRTC has rules about content. Imo, anything DURING a show that is paid for by betting companies shouldn't count towards the "Canadian content" guideline. When u watch a raps game and the panel all make Hypothetical bets and tease each other about who won their parlay and who didn't..that's not "content". It's an advertisment/commercial. And it shouldn't COUNT as content under the CRTC guidelines.

.
I'm no Nancy Reagan type....but the whole takeover does reek of sleaziness in our sports media. With silver trying to project this social justice, high moral ground image the past 5 years... there is some hypocrisy in going after all this dirty money. In addition, for all the nba's talk about social justice....it's vulnerable communities (ie the poor) who are disproportionately hurt by the normalization and accessibility of sports gambling.

That said...I don't agree there is hypocrisy in how porter was dealt with. You gotta ban him.

Remember when the Raptors were granted a franchise. David Stern wouldn't give the go ahead till Ontario removed the NBA games from Pro Line. And the province caved in and did it. How far we've come since then, and not in a good way.

No, Jontay needs to be sanctioned. The hypocrisy is that the current relationship with the betting industry is going to do more harm in the future. The NBA will not learn from this. A whole generation of young basketball players, hooked on gambling before even getting to the NBA, will be a significant problem. The NBA encourages them to gamble before they get to the NBA, but then all of a sudden they have to stop once they get here? That's hypocrisy.

I hope Masai and Bobby are asking draft prospects about their gambling habits.
