2008/2009 Salaries, Cap, Luxury tax Threshold and MLE

Jermaine O'Neal $21,352,500

Chris Bosh $14,410,581

Jose Calderon $7,552,674 (estimate)

Jason Kapono $5,784,480

Andrea Bargnani $5,176,440

Anthony Parker $4,550,000

Kris Humphries $3,200,000

Joey Graham $2,449,184

Roko Ukic $1,250,000

Hassan Adams $711,517

Jamario Moon $711,517

Nathan Jawai $442,114 (not counted towards luxury tax)

(Jorge Garbajosa) ($4,000,000) (buyout)

Approximate Salary Total: $71,148,893
*If Garbajosa is signed to a contract in Europe, our cap hit will be decreased by one-half the difference between the player's new salary and the minimum salary for a one-year veteran.

*Using basic algebra and BC's value of 1,107, I calculated Jose Calderon's 08/09 salary to be $7,302,674 which with 8% increases over 5 years would add up to $42,841,874. In this case Garbo's cap hit is still 4 mil.

*Using the same method, if Garbajosa's cap hit is 2 mil, Calderon's 08/09 salary could also be $9,302,674, which with 8% increases over 5 years would add up to $54,575,076.

I personally believe, that the first scenario is the case.
2008/2009 NBA Salary Cap: $58,680,000
2008/2009 NBA Luxury Tax Threshold: $71,150,000
2008/2009 MLE : $5,850,000
Funds Permitted for Raptors Use: $1,107
???

I will update this thread when actual NBA values are released in early July, or IF trades happen and new players come in or existing exit.

Sticky this please. Very helpful in understanding our current situation this off-season. This proves dagger's points about how we have almost no money available to sign anybody of real significance. It will be interesting to see how BC goes about our swingman problems if he does at all.

We're taking into account his expected figure that he'll sign for in the offseason.

***Assuming Calderon signs for 8 million***

The Raptors have 9 players under contract for $67,634,702

They need 6 more players! Granted, most can be scrubs, but need a back up PG (Roko). Also, Delfino won't be free.

Is there a contract the Raptors can get out of? Joey Graham? I'm sure they can find a similar player for $300,000.

Shizzz... that's tight

I'm not positive, so don't quote me on this, but I don't think Calderon will accept 2.4 for next season. Just a hunch.

He's a free agent.

I agree this should be stickied. People have to start paying a lot more attention to the financials and cap rules if they're going to provide valuable insight with their comments.

The $8 million is a best guess as to what Calderon's salary will be in 08/09 (as the title suggests, we're talking about 2008/2009's salaries)

Honestly, how are we filling 6 roster spots witth 2.6 million?

Will MLSE let us go over the luxury with the MLE? is that an option?

lets see. If we can somehow turn JoeyG into a backup 2 guard (Redick?),
But look at it this way:

As far as I know, minimum contracts don't count towards luxury tax. So if we can land Rasho (if the rumors of him being baught out and returning to the raps are true), a vet PG like Brevin Knight, a vet SG like Ronald Murray or Giracek, a couple of undrafted FA's or DLeaguers on minimum contracts, we're safe there without having to pay luxury tax on those contracts.

Now lets say we sign Artest for the MLE. So this will put us about 3.2 mill over the luxury tax thresold, which means will have to pay another 3.2 in luxury tax making Artest's contract value to about 9.1 million (in reality we'd be paying him 5.9 mill). That STILL makes him a good eough player to pay 9.1 mill per for. Then you move Kapono at the SG spot behind AP and have Artest and Moon platoon the SF spot.

I'd like to know where you came up with this. I've never seen it, and I've never seen a variable buyout - it's almost always a fixed dollar amount.

I'm not calling BS, but since he just signed or will soon sign a two million Euro contract with Unicaja Malaga in the Spanish ACB, and that's worth about $3.1 million at the current exchange rate, it suggests a cap reduction of $1.2 million.

If you are listing Jose, you should list Delfino until it's confirmed he is going elsewhere. We did give him a qualifying offer.
His salary will be about 2.75 million (hoopshype lists it at $2,744,299), which actually puts our total at $70,379,001.

We need to trade Graham for a backup PG or SG.

Or trade Kapono for a backup PG or SG and sign Nachbar.

Kapono for Bobby Jackson
Sign Delfino or Ukic
Sign Nachbar to MLE, yes we go into luxury tax but not by too much, maybe by 4 million.
Rest of the roster be NBDL free agents or undrafted players at minimum.

Calderon/Jackson
Parker/Delfino
Nachbar/Moon/Graham
Bosh/Humphries
O'Neal/Bargnani

Doesn't the salary of baught out or waived players not count againt the luxury tax?

Hmm, the Raps have already extended the qualifying offer of $2,744,299 to Delfino, which if accepted would already put us into luxury tax by your calculations unless a deal happened before the end of the next season.

I think the individual numbers can be quibbled with a little bit, without affecting the substance of your argument. I thought someone said $8.5 mill for Calderon. I've heard that the luxury tax threshold will be over $71 mill this upcoming year. I'm not sure if anyone knows for sure what Hump's extension price was. The best source is always Shamsports.com, and Sham says he doesn't know and refuses to put his best guess up there.

If the Raps were really that hard against it, they might have to let AP walk (he's no longer starter-quality anymore) and spread the money around. But BC in his Wednesday presser said no way, and indicated that he wanted AP as a Raptor for life.

I included Calderon because it is almost guaranteed he will be resigned at a most common speculated contract size of 8 million per year. Delfino however, although he did receive a qualifying offer, was not shown the same unconditional interest from BC.

I assumed Garbajosa had a guaranteed contract, therefore:
"Released players
Released/waived players with guaranteed contracts continue to be included in their former team's payroll. Players whose contracts are not guaranteed are included in team salary in the amount they made while they were with the team. Players on non-guaranteed "summer contracts" are not included in team salary unless they make the regular season roster.

1) If another team signs a released player who had a guaranteed contract (as long as the player has cleared waivers), the player's original team is allowed to reduce the amount of money they still owe the player (and lower their team payroll) by the right of set-off. Note that this is true if the player signs with any professional team — it does not even have to be an NBA team. The amount the original team gets to set off is limited to one-half the difference between the player's new salary and the minimum salary for a one-year veteran (if the player is a rookie, then the rookie minimum is used instead)."

2) If however, the Raptors were given a one-time opportunity to waive Garbajosa, and he was bought out, than it will not count towards luxury tax.

Garbajosa's compensation could not be reduced as he was waived after January 10, therefore it's one of the top two options.

As for Kris Humpries, the Toronto Star had this article with salaries: http://www.thestar.com/Sports/NBA/article/419923

Delfino being given a qualifying offer means that he is going to be a Raptor unless the goes to Europe.
I would not count on that space being available. Either way you slice it IMO it's better to take the more conservative (thus, having less money available) approach.

EDIT:
I think that bit regarding Garbo applies to NBA teams only.

Don't get me wrong Eventhorizon (cool name), we all appreciate the important work you've done here. Most of us have relied on Sham's numbers, but without Humps 08-09 salary his table is of limited usefulness.

It's just strange that BC's objectives seem contradictory.

1. MLSE doen't want to pay luxury tax - never stated but certainly implied.

2. Raps extend the qualifying offer to Delfino.

3. BC wants to bring Ukic over ($2-3 mill)

4. Raps take back $2-3 million more in salary from Indiana than they send out.

What does it all mean?

[edited to add]

5. Jawai is apparently to be signed.

6. Did we get our promised 20 ppg wingman yet?
