Raps about to shut Pops down?

From Doug's blog:
I’m talking to a guy who has some power in the organization – before the game, mind you – and we agree the best thing the Raptors can do right now is shut Pops Mensa-Bonsu down.

Really, three more losses and he develops a backache, or a headache, or “flu-like symptoms.”

Of course, that’s after he gets a wink and a nod on a two-year deal starting next year.

All the guy’s doing know is costing Toronto money and driving up his value on the open market.

You think other teams aren’t noticing 8 1/2 rebounds a game? You think scouts aren’t talking among themselves? You think there’s going to be some competition for his services on the market?

No, you can't do it. You need to play it out. See how long he can keep it up and see if he can ever make a team put him on their scouting report.

If Pops decides to leave for greener pastures, then fine. If he stays here because he's guaranteed 3rd big, then fine, too.

Making the game 1/3rd as exciting to watch. But if it means he stays with Toronto, so be it!

Three more losses? I guess we'll have to wait until early May. ;)

It's all about the future right now.

You got to see him and he fits off the bench. Cheap 2 year deal for Pops.

He gets the NBA deal, we get the cheap energy rebounder we need.

Everyone is happy. See you next year Pops, but he plays the rest of the year.

He has quite the Mensah IQ.

...because punishing a guy for showing heart on the floor and chaining him to the bench when he really wants to play is such a motivational incentive for Pops to return back to this organization... :noway:

...hope we don't need to stoop this low.

"Quick Jay draw up some plays where Pops can lower his FG% and is away from the key for every rebound"

This is the dumbest idea and the most unprofessional idea I've ever heard.

Yes, he is costing MLSE money. But he has already earned his $3M/2yrs salary starting next year. The money he will be costing them will be the $500k they have to eat to buy out POB.

The kid is a fan favourite. Works his ass off every minute. Is one of the most entertaining players we have right now.

I say, keep him on the court as long as possible. Even give him some minutes with the top line. See if he can mesh there for next year. He might be our Bosh lite replacement if Bosh tells BC he isn't resigning with us this summer.

Isn't it about time for Bosh to have another injury anyway (cough tank cough).

Lets all just have fun watching them play for the rest of the season.

I agree that Doug's hypothesis - and he's just navel gazing (assuming he can find his navel) - is far out in left field. POPS has to prove that he can do this day in, day out. It's not a surprise that he has the adrenalin going, but I have a hard time imagining him maintaining this energy level over 82 games with all the travel, the back to backs, the more challenging covers...

Think of it. We have the easiest part of our schedule, with hardly any back to backs, hardly any travel, and basically no games against good teams.

Nobody is going to hand POPS a big contract based on four games under the most favorable conditions possible. So he absolutely has to keep playing. Tonight is a small test - second game of a back to back. Let's see how he handles this.

why would Pops agree to decrease his own value?

"Hey, Pops. Stop playing well so that we can pay you less."

This makes no sense at all when the alternative is that he plays well and earns himself a decent contract with or without Toronto.

Funny Doug doesn't say we should shut down Bargnani. We could have rested him yesterday because he was still under the weather. Could have started Jake Voskhul.

Someone photopshop Pops standing in front of that tank prior to the Tiananmen Square massacre.

He did say "... 3 more losses".
