Draft Countdown: BJ Mullens

Post#1 » by djsunyc » Sat Jun 13, 2009 6:48 pm

we should strongly think about bj mullens.

our #9 pick should go towards a sg or sf as we need depth there. (even tho i know deltron will be back, and i feel we will re-sign marion).

but if we can get another #1, and this guy drops, then bringing in another frontcourt player to develop is not a bad idea. he has a decent jumper and he's a super athlete. not bad to stockpile some young talent in the froncourt in the event we lose bosh.

I was just over at the Bulls board, and apparently, the Bulls have promised Mullens with the 16th pick. It was reported by ESPN Insider, and apparently, he himself tweeted that he has been promised by the Bulls (don't know why he would do that), but seems pretty legit.

Forget frontcourt talent. We just need talent period on this team. Last I checked the frontcourt is quite secure. It's our SG/SF positions that need upgrading, so I strongly disagree with this.

Mullens is an absolute project of a big man. While I agree in theory of taking the risk on him if he does end up out of the lottery and plop him in the NBDL for the year, I don't see BC taking many risks like this with the Raps current situation.

I'd personally target Derozan with the 1st and then target T-Will with the 2nd (If we were to get one.)

Delfino/Derozan/AP
Marion/Graham/Williams

Would not be mad at all at that wing rotation. Solve the backup PG through free agency/trade or spot minutes from AP.

No need for AP and Graham they are both FAs if we got DD and T Will.

makes sense for the bulls. they need a scorer in the frontcourt badly.

Continue to apply BPA even with the second first.
If Mullens is BPA, you take him, if not, you don’t.
Basketball is like poetry in motion, cross the guy to the left, take him back to the right, he's fallin back, then just J right in his face. Then you look at him and say, "What?" - Jesus Shuttlesworth

A steal in the second round would be that Philadelphia kid, Dionte Christmas (Michael Redd part deuce).

I'd be ok with Mullens if he wasn't so lazy and unmotivated. He's definitely got the POB stink on him.

He's not worth the risk IMO. He's probably got a 15% chance of being Dalembert/Chandler and a 85% chance of being POB/Haffa.

I'd prefer signing a veteran big man to back up Bargnani. I mean, God forbid Bargnani gets injured or has to miss some games (how comfortable would anybody be rolling out a BJ Mullens or POB out there).

Assuming we get a SG with our 9th pick, with the 2nd 1st rounder we should get a back-up PG (and we could get a decent one considering how deep the draft is in point guards).

probably not, isn't Koufus a huge chip for Utah if they get into cap trouble? They need to purge someone if they keep Millsap so Koufus is a cheap big for them.

Mullens is intriguing but I dunno if I have the patience haha

Really? Lawson at 9? The guy has very limited upside, short arms and is undersized. If your gonna blow a #9 pick on a PG, use it on Jrue Holiday or Brandon Jennings.

To the OP, YES, I do believe that BJ Mullens has the potential to be very good in the league, he has all the physical tools. He is better than Hasheem Thabeet, being more athletic and better offensively, however still working on his defensive game. The only thing I believe, is holding BJ Mullens back is his work ethic and desire. This guy was a top 3 recruit for a reason.

I dunno they seem pretty similar to me, Mullens has +2.5 inch vertical and a bit quicker than O'Bryant, but a shorter wingspan and standing reach.

From what I've seen of O'Bryant and what I've seen of Mullins, Mullins is a far better prospect and a completey different player. He is a run and jump athlete while O'Bryant is a stand around and do nothing type of player. He has none of Mullins athleticism. He wasn't a top recruit in high school for nothing. He's a project though and a bit of a lazy punk from what I can tell.

More than any other major prospect in the draft, Mullens needs at least another year of college. He won't do anything at the NBA level for at least 3 years imo...he's that far away. With a late pick I wouldn't be heartbroken with taking him just based on his pure upside but I think this team has far more urgent needs that can be addressed through the draft (a back up pg for example)

I've read that he has a rough background and needs the money though so he's probably staying in regardless
