New CBA restrictions in place for 2024-25

Post#1 » by Fido » Wed May 15, 2024 9:10 pm

I was reading up on some of the new CBA restrictions impacting teams over the luxury tax. Here is a quick summary of what I've read and the teams currently impacted with salary figures (including options) as they stand now:

Second Tax Apron $190,000,000 +
- No mid-level exception
- Can’t take in more money than they’re trading out
- Can’t combine multiple players’ salaries into trades (2 for 1 for example)
- Can’t use trade exceptions from previous years or send cash in trades
- Can’t trade their first-round pick seven years into the future
- If a team remains in the second apron for two of the following four seasons, its first-round pick seven years out is frozen and moved to the end of that first round
Suns – 11 players $205,893,182
Celtics – 12 players $191,897,971
Nuggets – 13 players $190,898,657

First Tax Apron $179,000,000 +
- Can’t take in more money than they’re trading out
- Can’t sign a player waived during the regular season if his salary exceeds the mid-level exception
Timberwolves – 10 players $185,737,284
Bucks – 10 players $182,882,301
Heat – 12 players $182,298,756

Luxury Tax $172,000,000 +
- Dollar per dollar tax for amount over the luxury tax line
- Can’t use the full mid-level exception
Lakers – 12 players $178,752,962
Warriors – 11 players $174,108,395
Mavericks – 13 players $173,157,802
Grizzles – 13 players $172,462,375

Salary Cap $141,000,000 +
Trail Blazers – 14 players $167,125,212
Clippers – 10 players $166,742,498
Hawks – 12 players $162,592,575
Cavaliers – 11 players $157,776,613
Pelicans – 11 players $152,307,881
Kings – 11 players $151,533,024
Knicks – 11 players $149,686,050
Rockets – 12 players $146,370,107

Below Salary Cap ($141,000,000)
Nets – 11 players $134,473,343
Wizards – 13 players $133,016,253
Bulls – 11 players $129,956,824

Below Minimum Salary $127,000,000
Hornets – 14 players $118,414,252
Spurs – 12 players $118,152,292
Raptors – 10 players $117,748,198
Pacers – 11 players $107,577,534
Magic – 11 players $104,512,056
Thunder – 12 players $102,990,897
Jazz – 11 players $99,582,040
Pistons – 11 players $87,406,662
76ers – 5 players $65,852,187

Teams in the top couple categories may be motivated to cut someone loose that they might have otherwise kept.

Great breakdown. Thank you.

I would say some of the teams in the lower section might be willing to move players for multiple picks to help progress a rebuild. I could see us packaging 2 of our 1st round picks this year in a trade.
