Olympic event discussion (non basketball)

Post#1 » by bwgood77 » Mon Jul 26, 2021 11:20 pm

I kind of like gymnastics, swimming and track and field as well as basketball. Probably some others I am forgetting. Stuff like water polo is kind of fun.

Honestly Olympics are lots of fun for me. I watch just about every kind of event. Wrestling and weightlifting are 2 that I find the most underrated

Just watched Flora Duffy of Bermuda win the triathlon. She just won Bermuda their first gold medal ever. Great moment. They had only gotten one medal (bronze) ever before. Looks like USA is finishing 3rd. Duffy rooting her on at the finish too.

I always liked the Olympics on in the background and it's a stress reliever in a way (for some reason watching swimming is really soothing). I enjoy almost all of it but mostly basketball and gymnastics. I was not a gymnast, but I did many years of ballet and figure skating as a kid/teenager so I appreciate the art form.

Track and Field. And the Triathalon. Which the men’s last night was about the funnest thing I ever watched. A fat guy ran the 10k with all those skinny dudes, and all the leaders were running sub 5 min mile paces. And then, the fat guy steps on the gas, drops down to a 4:40 pace and blows their doors off down the stretch. Collapses at the tape and pukes his guts out. Not sure I have ever seen a human being literally leave it all out there. Ive seen people say they did, and it looked kind of like they did, but this guy, if they told me he died after the race Id say yep, he clearly should have died.

I loved that! Way to go Dad-Bod!

I’ve enjoyed 3-on-3 a lot. Hectic pace. Like eating popcorn before the big meal of the actual basketball games.

Volleyball, indoor and beach, is great, and handball is fun too. To be honest, I’ve watched a lot of different stuff, and enjoyed most of it. I tend to dislike anything scored subjectively, like gymnastic and diving.

Track and field.

Big stats nerd, check regularly the top lists every single year, not just the olympic years. Try to scavenge as much video data that I can find as well. Being from Romania, I don't get to see meets on TV that often except for the major champs and the commentators have no clue what they're talking about most often than not. Damn shame, we used to be top class from the 60's to the 90's, had a lot of Olympic Champions(I believe we were 3rd overall in medals at the LA Olympics) but we've sunken into a pit never to get out of it again. Now if we get 5 total medals in all of sports it's considered a good Olympics.

Much like the snowboard near the start of the winter olympics I have enjoyed the skateboarding events. Also looking forward the other more aerial driven one.

I can watch pretty much any event. Even if its not the most entertaining sport, my admiration for these people that have put so much time and dedication into these sports (the vast majority of them they dont make much of a living from) keeps my interest.

With that said, men's indoor volleyball has been one of my favorites to watch this year. I played a lot of beach volleyball growing up in Monterey, so I like the sport. But damn the athleticism some of these guys show off is pretty damn crazy. Great explosion and hand eye coordination on display.

We are a small country but we excell in many different sports. So I watch almost everything. Basketball is one of the few sports we're not good at. Volleyball is more popular here (for tall people). But we came close with 3x3 this year.
We already have gold medals in cycling and rowing. Hopefully we add more in swimming, sailing (wind surfing), BMX, track cycling and a few in track & field. We should finish well in the top 10 in the medal rankings.
Most impressive is to win in track & field so I'll enjoy this most of all.

I'm a huge track fan, even outside of the Olympics.

100m, 110 hurdles, 200, 400, 800, 400 hurdles, 1500, 5k, 10k, marathon. Lots of great runners and matchups coming up in Tokyo, can't wait! Especially excited to watch

Mens 110 hurdles - Can Grant Holloway break the WR? I think so.
Mens 200m - Noah Lyles, Erryon Knighton or the darkhorse Joseph Fahnbulleh?
Men's 400m Hurdles - Karsten Warholm vs. Rai Benjamin. This one is going to be a barn-burner between the two!
Men 1500m - Probably my most anticipated race. Cheruiyot, Jacob Ingebrigsten or the Americans Mathew Centrowitz, Cole Hocker?

The woman's 100m should be interesting even without ShaCari, can Shelly-Ann Fraser Price come close to Flo Jo?

Look out for Sydney McLaughlin, Gabby Thomas and Athing Mu of the U.S. to do great things.

JuVaughn Harrison should be very interesting in both the long jump and high jump.

For Olympic replays I'll watch highlights of basketball, wrestling, judo and some swimming events.

I've been watching some of the canoe kayak slalom stuff, but the first half of the olympics is about swimming for me

Winter: figure skating, I considered following it outside of the Olympics

McLaughlin is going to run away with it perhaps breaking her own WR. Muhammad is good too but Sydney is too fast.

I think the men's 400m hurdles is going to be very close between Warholm and Benjamin, Rai has the potential to beat him if he can get off to faster start than usual.

Did they get to the finals in these events yet?

Nope, not yet. Here's the schedule for track: https://en.as.com/en/2021/07/30/olympic_games/1627672495_175701.html

400m hurdles finals is Aug.3 for men and Aug.4 for women.

The women's 100m finals took place though yesterday (Japan's yesterday). Maybe today?

Mens 100m heats occurred to qualify for the semis. Surprise was Bromell coming in 4th in his heat and making it through with the best time of the non-top 3 placements. Bromell had looked invincible up to this point.

Andre Degrasse looked really good though with a 9.90 quarter-final race, lets go Andre!
