Yet its the British and Americans demanding apologies. That is why you aren't getting any sympathy in Spain and rewriting history to claim the Chinese in China are currently offended is not going to help.

You're not getting it. The Chinese media reports whatever the Chinese government wants them to report. Of course they're not going to start some type of political war with a country they do business with.

So in other words you don't know if they would be offended or not but figure you have the right to make your own conclusions.

Why does this thread keep going? Hasn't the point be made already that under other cultures, such actions are not racist. In fact, they are more friendly and outreaching than in the host culture of these boards?

1st) Why hasn't been reported? Maybe because, the ones who do doesn't give a f***? Because they weren't offended?

2nd) Take at as you want it, the Rocky 5000 quote is false. Chinese people either a) doesn't know anything about the photo b) they dont care a+b) the next game they cheer for spain

So the boos on the last game... when we play against... CHINA... I mean, do the math by yourself.

Don't ruin their ability to rewrite history. They are good at it.

Just in case you come around Spain and see 1,000 of them on the streets, you don't have to run away from them. They're not the KuKlux Klan. You don't have to fly back to your country saying "How racist Spaniards are! I saw 1,000 members of the Ku Klux Klan and more than 5,000 people watching the march!

What a good example! It's sad that hardheaded people will find an excuse to go off at a tangent...

Do Spanish people interract with Chinese people in both Spain and around the world using the slant eye gesture?

I just gave you the answer in the other post.

That doesnt answer my question. Mimicing another countires culture is one thing. Wearing their attirre and all that is nice and not exclusive to Spain. There are plenty of countries that do that, US included.

My question: Do you and or spainards walk up to asians on the street and give them the slant eye gesture?

Again, I will say, that I understand you POV, I am just pointing out that you dont understand others POV.

China is a communist country that is known from keeping and hiding media and info from their people. To use that quote as an example --- China is not offended by it because the China govt. has not shown it to the people doesnt add up.. does it ?

There's even a Wikipedia entry on it:

At the same time you accept Asian stereotypes meant to be bad jokes just because it's "pop culture", you can't forgive and forget the Spanish NT even if we prove to you, that the intention wasn't offensive and that in our country (the Ku Klux Klan-Nazarano thing?, you know? It's indeed a good example) its not a joke, its even an afeccionate sign.

What are you talking about? When did I ever say that racial stereotypes are acceptable? Every country has racism, prejudice and stereotypes. Those links you posted...it's not like Asians in America are okay with those stereotypes but at the same time we realize it takes time to move past these things. Racial tolerance is improving day by day but it'll never become a non-issue. Being more racially sensitive is a good step. We are a minority and have little to no pull in the American entertainment industry. I'm not quite sure you understand that.

You are lost.

The point of the pic is that they are going to China so they will be Chinese which is the custom with NT and in general in Spain when they go abroad. Where in the pic is there a Chinese individual that they are approaching. Must be invisible.

Just like when in the carnival in Spain they dress up like Egyptians, Japanese etc. There must be some Egyptian they are looking for to do it in front of.

Spaniards do not see anything wrong with mimicking physical features because they don't see anything wrong with those features if they did they wouldn't be mimicking them.

Ain't communism grand?

You guys are just grabbing at straws.

So the only reason its not a controversy in China is because China is communism and is not reporting it.

So I guess it is the job of the British and Americans to get that apology for them.

Thats not the point.

But does it make sense to say that the Chinese state owned media had not released these images on one hand and then on the other say.. well they dont have a problem with it.

I dont know and or care about the US and British media. Spain or China for that matter. I do know that there are alot of people in many countries that are asian and that this could be taken as offensive to them.

The Media in the US does not represent me, so please dont try to paint that picture.

I am not painting you in a bad way.. I am just wondering why its ok in your culture and we should respect that.. but its not ok when another culture has a problem with it -- in your eyes.

@GuyverX

I understand you. But you don't understand me. What I'm trying to say is that you should be much more worried for that "pop culture" who constantly assault YOU on your OWN country than the Spanish-only ways to show our affection and respect to China.

You lost your time trying to change our culture and our traditions, while you could be doing something against real RACISM. But since you're more interested in mocking Spain, I guess that's the American side on you the one that's winning.

All I know is I have learned a lot from these last 2 threads about Spain.
LMAO at the EURO redemption..............
BUT funny thing last night I was in Newport Beach, you know a beach town here in Southern Cali and I actually met a real cutie from Spain she said she was from a town called Menorka.
I brought up the picture incident and she said that it is a common jesture to do that in Spain but she added that it was wrong what they did and there are a few Spaniards that had a problem with that..............
Anyhow were suppose to go out with her and some friends of hers on Sat, all I know is that I am her tour guide and I will make sure she feels at home and she sees what the American Culture is all about.
VIVA LA SPANIAAAAAAAA.

I understand and have said over and over I get the spainards side in this. I have said it was not done to offend the asians.

Do you get that part? Hopefully so , so we can move on from that.

Just like when in the carnival in Spain they dress up like Egyptians, Japanese etc. There must be some Egyptian they are looking for to do it in front of.

again, no thats not the point. I said these types of displays happen all over the world and I am fine with it, encourage it and think its cool.

Spaniards do not see anything wrong with mimicking physical features because they don't see anything wrong with those features if they did they wouldn't be mimicking them.

Ok, thats fine. When you and or someone made the KKK ref. to the attire in your country-- you were trying to make a point that its ok in the spain to wear those clothes ( as it should be) .. so based on that non-racial act .... its ALSO ok to mimic other cultures.. thats fine too.

I dont condsider your explanation about wearing other cultures clothes on par with walking up to an asian on the street and making such a gesture. I am trying to find out from you.. if this is in fact something that is done in spain.

I am not lashing out at you.. I am asking you. You are the one that is lashing back.

THe comparison hits a snag when I ask you the question:

So you and or spainards walk up to asians on the street and give them the slant eye gesture?

My guess is no, but I dont know.. that is why I asked. I was hoping you would say.. either yes or no.

I didn't mean it wasn't covered by the media but we seem to think we don't have a race problem in America. It was racially insensitive but I've seen a lot worse than that in the US.

Not to mention how the American media loves to portray black people a villains. But that is another story.

This is the definition of pot/kettle here.

Well I know many asians and they are offended. They would be offended if a person ( no matter where they are) made this gesture to them. That is where I am coming from.

You on the other hand are saying they are not offended -- based on the china-state-owned media has not shown it to them.

I guess that your friends have been alienated by the RACIST US culture.

Follow me:
Slanted eyes is a racist gesture in US. By definition, this means, than in US, people without slanted eyes are superior to the people who have slanted eyes. So everytime an Asian-Americans feel offended by that, he's implying that by having slanted-eyes they're inferior to the US people.

That's your culture, intoxicating chinese people who come to USA, so that they think that this is racist->they're inferior.

In Spain, they're not inferior by having slanted eyes. Neither does it on China. The only one's offended has been the Asian-Americans. That's the US culture, the kids mocking them on the school, the movies and tv series mocking them, making them feel inferior and ashamed of his eyes.

Some do, some don't. Just like some Europeans look androgynous and some don't. Some whites are unathletic, some aren't.

It rarely helps anything or anybody to start playing on stereotypes, which are inherently prejudicial.

First of all, Chinese DO have slantier eyes than occidental people. You're point about androgynous Europeans (never heard this by the way) and un/athletic white people doesn't apply because that is subjective and can be deemed negative.

Are you trying to say that slanty eyes are a bad thing? Perhaps its just me but I don't think its a bad thing at all.

No SOME Asians have "slanted" eyes. SOME don't.

And just because a stereotype is "positive" does not mean it still isn't ignorant broad-brushing. "All Asians are good at math" or "All blacks can jump high" are just as ignorant as negative stereotypes, and contribute just as much to the jingoist tribalism that creates all stereotypes. They serve to do nothing but separate "us" from "them."
