Just tuned in and following the match via Slam Tracker. Is Fed playing poorly, or is Gael just playing better tennis?

Both.

Gael was hitting impossible shots all night while Federer turned into Federror.

Felt like I was watching opposite ends of the mental toughness spectrum. Horrible to watch Monfils implode in that 5th set.

Monfils wasted 2 very winnable matchpoints in the 4th set, and this was no surprise
But, Le Mon certainly took his pint of blood

It's Monfils, I was pretty sure he'd **** it up. All that skill and athleticism and no end product.

I admire Peng's determination, but I'm not sure if they can give her treatment in the middle of a game. It's been 5 minutes and counting between serves and she's been carried to the back.

Almost 10 minutes and Peng returns, not having been penalized a point and she's still clearly in pain.

Finally, they call it off. Probably should've called it off earlier to protect her from herself.

4 straight US Open finals for Serena. Dominant matches like today make me wonder how she isn't winning consistently. Even on off days, she should be pulling off wins.

Serena has plenty of motivation to keep playing, because she will be well within reach of Graf's record 22 majors if she wins this here 18th.

If she loses, then still possible, but good to win at least a slam this year when you are 5 away from the record.

Serena's WORST set at this US Open is 6-3

Serena is 18-1 since WImbledon, and that loss was to Venus.

Kind of not looking forward to another Djoker Fed final... Would probably be a great match, but I'm pulling for the upsets. Well actually, a Djokovic/Cilic final would probably be the least desirable outcome.

I'm pretty impressed with Nishikori thus far, though.

If Kei wins this match to reach his first GS final after playing consecutive 5-set 4+ hour matches, it'd be quite the accomplishment. He's been much more of a threat to the 'big 4' then Dimitrov and Raonic have been, who both seemingly get all the attention as the new generation. Nishikori's already beaten Federer this year and played Nadal extremely tough earlier this year before he had to retire due to injury. Dimitrov's and Raonic's H2H against Djokovic, Nadal, and Federer are futile. Raonic's record against them is especially pathetic. Does he really have any conceivable chance at winning a slam? No return game and relying on tie breaks to win against lesser players is not gonna get it done in today's grueling baseline game. Though, they both fare better against Murray, Nishikori seems to be the only one that can give them all a challenge. He just needs to stay healthy.

Most greats break through very early in their careers. A lot of them before the age of 25. They're already 23, 23 and 24 with Kei being the oldest.

Nishikori is getting too many chances to not come off with a break here.

Great win. Can't remember the last time Asia had a player in a slam final. Djokovic looked vulnerable for the last couple games but he pulled it off against a semi-fit Murray but Nishikori's been in some real good form.

Didn't they say on the broadcast this is the first time ever? Well at least on the men's side. Li Na obviously for the women's.

What a run. Raonic, Wawrinka, Djokovic, three top 10 players eliminated.

They said the first Japanese could be the first Asian too.

Yup, just did a quick search. Indeed first ever Asian man. This is good for the game. Big untapped market in Asia.

Djokovic played like he wanted to lose today. :banghead:

Congrats to Kei though, he deserved it.
