2023-24 Season Draft SF2 - flaco* vs. Dr Positivity

Post#1 » by Fadeaway_J » Wed May 1, 2024 12:00 am

Here is a quick list of what you need in your writeup.

1. Specific years for each player on your team
2. Rotations and minutes for each player
3. Reasoning as to why your team will win and/or why people should vote for you.

Do not vote in this thread until both managers have submitted their writeups. Please ensure you give a rationale for your vote; votes with no explanation will not be counted.

If writeups aren't posted within 24 hours, we will vote solely based on the players they have drafted (and any rotations they have posted on their roster page).

**First to 3 votes advances.**

PG: Kyrie Irving (FGA: 19.5)
SG: Jalen Suggs (FGA: 9.5)
SF: Herb Jones (FGA: 7.7)
PF: Pascal Siakam (FGA: 15.9)
C: Nikola Jokic (FGA: 17.9)

SG: Justin Holiday (FGA: 3.3)
SG/SF: Joe Ingles (FGA: 3.3)
PF/C: Aaron Gordon (FGA: 9.8)

86.9 / 88

PG: Kyrie Irving (38) / Jalen Suggs (10)
SG: Jalen Suggs (24) / Justin Holiday (10) / Joe Ingles (14)
SF: Herb Jones (36) / Joe Ingles (6) / Aaron Gordon (4)
PF: Pascal Siakam (34) / Aaron Gordon (14)
C: Nikola Jokic (38) / Aaron Gordon (10)

GL flaco

Defensive matchups: Irving on VanVleet, Suggs on Edwards, Jones on George, Siakam/Gordon on Giannis, Jokic on Horford

This series is all about Jokic putting up video game numbers for us against old Horford, I believe the trio of him, Irving and Siakam is better on offense than Giannis with Edwards and George. Siakam may not be the perfect Giannis defender, but Gordon can be huge for us in this series on that end. When we have Gordon in with Suggs and Jones we have a very sound defense against Edwards/George/Giannis. I don't see the gap in 7th and 8th man making up the bench difference between him and Isaac, McLaughlin hasn't been getting any more time in the playoffs than Holiday, furthermore having Jokic allows us to not have to rely on a real backup PG on offense.

Rotations
PG: Fred VanVleet (38) / Jordan McLaughlin (10)
SG: Anthony Edwards (38) / Keon Ellis (10)
SF: Paul George (38) / Keon Ellis (10)
PF: Giannis Antetokounmpo (22) / Jonathan Isaac (26)
C: Al Horford (32) / Giannis Antetokounmpo (16)

Offense
Giannis and Ant are options #1A and #1B respectively. I'd argue they are the best players at their position in the NBA. George is option #2. Everybody else spreads the floor. FVV and Horford provide secondary shot creation. Giannis surrounded by reliable 3pt shooters should be unguardable. He recorded career highs in efficiency this season becoming the first player in NBA history to average 30-10-5 on over 60% shooting.

Defense
Horford may drop or switch. Giannis may roam, drop, switch or fight through. FVV and McLaughlin are my POA defenders. They go over / fight through the pick forcing Kyrie to put the ball on the floor and either take the long 2 of the dribble or attack the basket against Horford/Giannis/Isaac. When Gordon is on the floor, Giannis may double on Jokic. All players on the roster are plus defenders, to say the least. Giannis is a former DPOY. Isaac led the league in Defensive Estimated Plus Minus this season.

A few words on Keon Ellis since he's untested in our games. He became a starter for the Kings after Kevin Huerter suffered a season-ending injury. Never looked back ever since. Started in both of their play-in games. He's 41.7% 3pt shooter on 72.4% 3PAr and a terrific defender recording a DBPM of +2.1.

FGA
Giannis Antetokounmpo 18.8 Image
Paul George 16.7 Image
Anthony Edwards 19.7 Image
Al Horford 6.4
Jonathan Isaac 4.9
Jordan McLaughlin 3.0
Keon Ellis 4.1
Fred VanVleet 13.9

Total: 87.5

Jokic is the ultimate trump card in this pool - he's just way above everyone else. I love Ant and Giannis and think they make for a devastating duo, but I don't think either of them, nor anyone else on flaco's team, elevate their teammates as much as Jokic. Kyrie+Siakam are great compliments as well.

Much as Jokic has improved defensively, I think the Lakers showed how he can still be attacked relative to other superstars at his position. Specifically, if you can create openings to go directly at him in the paint, he's not going to be much a deterrent. Flaco has the tools to make this happen with Horford providing good spacing at the 5 combined with the rim pressure of Giannis and Ant. Throw in Kyrie and the calcified (on the defensive end) Ingles, and flaco has fewer defensive weak spots with comparable offensive punch. Neither bench is amazing, but I don't think Gordon as super sixth man makes up for 30 minutes of Ingles and Holiday.

I didn’t particularly want to vote here since I might have to play the winner, but it appears I have no choice. My opponent has already voted here too.

I broadly prefer Flaco’s team. I think he has an overall talent edge and buy that this well spaced offense should be a good way to take advantage of Jokic.

I don't think Horford can play 32 minutes reliably at this stage. Even when Porzingis was out, he played 23 minutes and Kornet played 18 minutes against Miami.

Against Jokic that would be a problem, he will keep Giannis too occupied. I also prefer Dr P's depth a bit more, although I don't think Justin Holiday is very useful nowadays - flaco plays too much minutes of limited players.

Flaco gets my vote.
Jokic balls out for sure.
His team is just too talented IMO.
32 mins for Horford is a lot and unideal but it is what it is.
ANT / PG / Giannis is tough.

GG, Dr P!

For the record, Horford played 23 mins in game 5 cause it was a blowout. All starters played less minutes than usual. For instance, Brown played 26 mins.

Image

Horford played 34 mins in game 4 at Miami. That was the game Porzingis went down with his injury.

He normally plays around 30 when he's covering for Porzingis.

I didn't see it as an issue personally.
