I hadn't paid sufficient attention to Derek Trucks until you guys lauded him here. Didn't even realize he had a band with Susan Tedeschi.

Here they are doing the great great Lightning Hopkins song, The Sky is Crying:

Trucks' solo is really great, but-- guess what? -- Susan Tedeschi's solo is even better. She's a she so you probably never heard of her, am I right?

Of course, the song is strongly associated with Albert King, who was for many years my favorite blues musician. Since I know we have some Stevie Ray Vaughn fans in the house, here they are doing the song together -- introduced by B.B. King & with the late great Paul Butterfield (with whom btw I was well acquainted in Chicago way back in the 1960s -- you know... when your grandma was young, & I took her out for dinner plus whatever happened next I can't quite recall...) on harmonica:

While we're at it, here's Hubert Sumlin, one of the true greats. Howlin' Wolf's guitarist for more than a decade...

Just a late in life informal live recording, but it's the real real.

I believe Susan and Derek are married. Their band has been a thing for more than a little while
so I'm not sure where ya been PIF..

The earliest version in my library of The Sky Is Cryin I believe was done by Elmore James.

Missed you at Rams Head. Then I was worried I was going to be stranded in Annapolis.
I was waiting in my car (Prius plug in hybrid) before the show and I ran the 12V battery
down and the car wouldn't start. A group of 3 guys that were at the show gave me jump
so I made it home. Phew.

Spoke to Bill after the show. Such a nice guy. He signed a CD I had and then Rams Head
gave my a poster promoting the show and BIll signed that too. He closed the show with
what he called my song of hope, Dylan's The TImes they Are a Changing which he did a
rippin' job on.

Glad to hear it & I hope they're happy, have kids, etc. It's just that I don't listen much to nth generation white blues guitarists -- don't get me wrong: that doesn't mean they can't play, or that I don't enjoy it (quite a lot in this case!) when I do listen. It's just not in my headphones very often.

Of course -- it's an Elmore James tune -- got nothing to do with Lightnin Hopkins.

As can be seen by one who's hip
On my part "Lightnin" was a slip

A tiny dip of my brain's fingertip
As, sliding downward bit by bit,

Day by day I lose my grip.

Won’t you help me brother, please help me start my car?
It’s so hard for me here, so easy where you are.

I can’t spend all night, gazing at the sky
While people all around me lazily cruise by.

I said oh brother help me start my car today
I’ve got to get back to my baby far away.

Well the times are always changing,
That's what people say.

& I am sure they must be right;
Still, I wonder -- in what way?

To find out's why I hang around:
From the past until tomorrow

& especially today.

one of my xmas gifts was the Tedeschi Trucks Band CD of a live concert they did
in which they played the entire Layla (Derek and the Dominos) album.

It's outstanding but that was a no brainer for me as I consider that album to be
the GoaT ROCK guitar album.

This entire mix goes bonkers, if they played this at the verizon center you'd see me going HAM in the stands they'd have to ban me from the area

I'm playing a gig tonight at the aforementioned Earp's Ordinary on University dr in Fairfax.
(don't use nav to find it) It's above the Ornery Beer Co near the intersection of North and University.

I think we play 8-10. No cover.
