payitforward wrote:The Phoenix Suns were actually able trade Isaiah Todd.

They sent him to the Grizzlies & also included R1 pick swaps in 2024 & 2030.

In return, the Grizzlies gave the Suns three R2 picks -- a 2025 second-round pick they got from New Orleans plus their own R2 picks in 2028 and 2029.

We already have those swap rights, so it's going to put a limit on their value.

In 2024, we will be awful so we will be out of the transaction. The 2024 pick swap happens if the Suns finish below Memphis. That's plausible, but chances are, if the Suns are worse than Memphis, it won't be by much. So it will probably only be a few slots in the draft if there is a swap at all.

In 2030, Phoenix is likely to be pretty awful, but Washington has swap rights first. So Memphis will only get the worst of the Phoenix/Washington pick (assuming both picks are higher than where Memphis picks).

Interesting strategy from Phoenix though. They're just mortgaging the hell out of their future. Not only are they trading all of their tradeable picks, but they are setting up multiple swaps on their untradeable picks so that they will virtually guarantee that the future picks they do have will be a the very bottom of the first round.

Really seems like amateur hour in Phoenix....

I'm betting on them taking a tumble this year.... Likely an inexorable descent thereafter as well.

Some horrible decisions, mortgaging the entire future of the franchise to lose in the 2nd round.

I think PIF is right, that Phoenix will actually be worse this year than last.

I get people might not like the Beal trade from the Suns perspective, but this trade seems like a fantastic trade for them.

They get rid of Todd, clearing a roster spot for this season. They get three second-round picks.

And all they gave up was a 2024 FRP swap (that probably won't even transfer, and even if it does it'll only be a couple of slots difference) and a 2030 FRP swap? Sounds pretty great to me.

Wouldn't it be wild if we were a darling play in team and the suns get a top three pick..... Then swap!

Those three 2RP's are likely to be pretty late though. One is from New Orleans in 2025, so maybe in the late 40's. And two are from Memphis in 2028 and 2029, so probably in the 50's. Picks that late are a total crapshoot and probably aren't any better than having a roster spot for a walk-on.

Or they're the price to move up one spot in the first round.

Yeah but where Re they moving up too lol they have control of no picks and in 2 years they could potentially get swapped back twice in one year.

Bradley Beal ....the official PG for the Phoenix Sun,LOL.
Wiz fans will cry it can't be done .....except he's not THE GUY with the Suns team ,it's Bookers team and KD has Championship rings already so Beal won't have to play like he has to do more than he needs.Plus it's a big difference playing for Vogel and the Suns than playing for Wes Unseld Jr .

Yeah, Wizards Twitter is having a good laugh about Beal being the PG, but it's much ado about nothing. Beal will be "PG" in that he will be the smallest guy in the starting lineup and will be charged with defending the opposition's PG. On offense, I expect
Beal, Booker and Durant to all share ball handling duties more or less equally. They will all bring the ball up the court and they can all run pick-and-roll.

I'm not saying it's going to work out. That team doesn't have enough defenders. But I don't think having Beal as the nominal PG is some kind of epic fail. That part will be fine.

Admiral Schofield -- who is to be commended for managing to keep himself in the league for four years -- has just signed a 2-way deal with the Magic.

Me too.

I felt that Schofield played himself into being a fringe NBA player - just good enough to make a roster, but not quite good enough to be in a regular rotation. So, in the abstract, it's not all that surprising that he made a ball club. There are 30 teams in the league, each with a roster of 18. That's 540 players. I don't think it's unreasonable to rank Schofield as around the 500th best player in the league. But what's surprising is that teams usually give up on guys who only reach "fringe NBA player" by age 26. It's better to write that kind of guy off and instead go find a 22-year-old fringe player who might still improve enough to be a rotation player.

Basically, most teams would rather have the 520th best player in the league who happens to be 22 years old, than the 500th best player in the league who happens to be 26 years old.

That makes perfect sense.
Hence, Admiral deserves to be commended all the more.

Speaking of former Wizards, it's notable that John Wall remains a free agent and probably will not be signed. His NBA career is likely over.

It's kinda sad how his career ended in a whimper.

I wonder if he'll go overseas like Kemba. He's still relatively young.

He certainly doesn't need the money. And given his injury history over his career, he's probably not all that excited to put a bunch more miles on his body and end up limping for the rest of his life.
