This here is now the new thread for all things music related. Favorites, your own projects, upcoming shows that are likely to kick ass, new stuff, old stuff, your musical roots and vfavorite songs from youth etc.

I especially hope it gets used for introducing folks to music you like, that they may or may not have heard yet. I expect an eclectic mix of a wide variety of styles, some you might like, some not-- but I fully expect to hear new great stuff that I wished I'd a found first since often it seems like I live in a cave.

We'll have to build a new links thread to keep track of this.

A few things on loop in my current brainspace:

Zoe Keating: cellist formerly of Rasputina. She plays live mixing and looping and electronix effex on her celloviol. Her album Cellos x 16 is kicking my ass.

Checkout Tetrishead for an example. Moody mellow but somehow ominous rhythmic and grim.

Manu Chao is a sorta spanish folk rock music, used to be a bit more so-cal style punk rock (w/ Mano Negra) but is constantly evolving. The guy was born in france of spanish parents, sings in english spanish french various african languages, plays reggae, ska, and folk inflected songs that just make you want some kind of positive revolution. Party for your right to fight, you could have fun at a Manu Chao live show.

Great production, the saxophone riff lifted from the old school classics but repurpsoed to great effect.

I've been taking (acoustic) guitar lessons for about a year and have for the most part entrenched myself with a lot of singer/songwriter material. Basically stuff that most people on here could careless about (my influences vary from older classic and/ or southern rock (e.g. Neil Young, Townes Van Zant, Van Morrison etc.) to more modern stuff (e.g. Ray LaMontagne, Damien Rice, Elliot Smith, Ryan Adams etc.).

Although regardless of what you like, you can't deny that Ray and Damien do the Bee Gees justice on this:

However, in an effort to contribute to this thread, I was down at SXSW in Austin in the Spring of 07 and one "band" really stood out to me. They're still a local Austin act, but I just dug their originality. I couldn't find their best track (Keep it Movin -- which definitely has a go-go intro drum beat influence to it) on youtube, but I did find this nugget:

I saw Manu Chao on his tour last summer with Thievery Corporation, it was a good time.

Ah, a thread after my own heart. I'm a big-time music head.

Benny Sings. Benny Sings is a Dutch R&B/Pop singer who sounds like a cross between Jamiroquai and Michael Franks, with a touch of Maxwell. He has some of the happiest sounding music I've heard in a while.

J Sky Walker. Hip hop. J Sky Walker is a hip hop artist based out of Brooklyn. He features inspirational lyrics that seek to uplift. In the interests of full disclosure, I should note that a production company I'm affiliated with handled the production on this album; and I produced one of the tracks on the album myself (you can preview track 8, "Stalker"; that's my track). If you like what you hear, by all means support; you can buy it online here or here.

Zo & Tigallo. Hip hop meets 80s cover band. Indie R&B/hip hop producer Zo teamed up with Phonte from hip hop group Little Brother to produce an eclectic mix of covers of songs from the 80s and early 90s. Despite making his fame as a rapper, Phonte is actually a very capable singer as well. It's a fun little vanity project; they're only pressing 2500 copies of the CD worldwide, so you gotta hustle to find a copy.

Solveig Slettajell. Norweigian jazz vocalist. Her sound is kinda like Norah Jones, but with a hint of electronica on some songs. Very chill. I recommend her albums Pixiedust and Slow Motion Orchestra (FYI-those are iTunes links).

See now that's what I'm talking about, doesn't matter what kind of music you normally listen to, you can always pick up something new. Personally I never had to claim any one type of music (I think the first song i learned all the lyrics to was the Charlie Daniels band 'Devil went down to Georgia'-- either that or the Sugarhill gang (hip to the hippetty), or 'Another One Bites the Dust' (Queen), or 'Freak Out' by le Chic, or I dunno 'Sixteen Tons' (folk traditional) or whatever we'd sing in daycare.

Punk rock to opera if it's good it's good.

Ray LaMontaigne does 'Crazy'... wow.

For those who like a mixture of many different genres, you'll like this song. They mix hip hop, rock and classical music together very nicely.

Good look on Manu Chao, Doc. I especially liked 'Welcome to Tijuana.' Good stuff.

One of my best friends from high school lives in Melbourne now and when I went to visit him 3.5 years ago we rolled through a campground somewhere in the western part of Victoria blasting "The Streets".

To this day, the song "Turn the Page" from time to time randomly pops in my head. "They're" (it's actually just one bloke), from the UK and have had some mild success here in the States so you guys may have heard of "them" but if not, here's a link:

If you guys are into Progressive Rock...or "alt-prog" as I call it, check out some of my bands stuff.

We are of course called Soup's Uncle. I put some rough stuff from the studio up the ohter night. They are rough tracks (unmixed and unmastered) with some scratch vocals and are missing some keys and backing vocals and such.

Just a warning, they sound like balls on computer speakers but sound pretty nasty on headphones. Our album is like 2 weeks away from being done. I'm so siked.
