NBA.com Preview
The trade of Jason Kidd during the season had been long-rumored, but when the New Jersey Nets dealt Richard Jefferson over the summer, it seemed they were intent on rebuilding.

The Washington Wizards committed a lot of money to retaining their core players, but they'll start the season without perhaps their most important piece.

No one knows exactly when Gilbert Arenas will return from offseason knee surgery, but the Wizards will try to survive without him once again starting Wednesday night when they open at home against the youthful Nets.

Washington (43-39) made the playoffs for the fourth consecutive season in 2007-08, losing to Cleveland in the first round for the third straight postseason. Even getting in, though, wasn't easy. Caron Butler missed 24 games due to a hip injury and center Etan Thomas missed the entire season after open-heart surgery, not to mention Arenas playing only 13 games after having his second career knee surgery.

Caron needs to turn it on in this game. He's being guarded by Bobby frikkin Simmons!!! I'm expecting 25+ from Tough Juice in front of the home crowd. This season's opener is going to be boring without Gil's antics, and the after fog should more than disrupt the Nets' first quarter play. Carter has it way harder with Deshawn hounding him all night, and if he doesn't put up decent numbers the Nets offense is dead in the water. Then again, our own offense hasn't looked very offensive lately. We've got more weapons and should win this one relatively easily.

Prediction: Wizards 96 Nets 84

Jwiz. Great game thread. The Nets don't look too bad on paper, at least until you think about Josh Boone playing the 5.

Gee, I wish the Wizards had a center that wasn't suck. Oh yeah, we do... McGee. Bring him on early EJ, bring him on.

Why was the other thread locked? Why not merge?

Because if I merged it, your post wouldn't be 1st (or even on the 1st page), defeating the purpose of creating a more formal thread.

You mean it's not possible to unsticky the thread and make my post first? You mods aren't as powerful as a thought you were. Then again, I am talking to the same mod who couldn't fix the name of my Beauty Archive when it got messed up and allowed me... a mere pseudo-mod to figure it out. Where has Pine been by the way?? He became conspicuously absent when it came time to throw down.

Just be glad your 2nd-rate thread got stickied. I'm obviously saving my thread-making for later in the season.

DAME the season starts tomorrow so let me be the first to drop this in the game thread:

**** this **** and **** that **** too.

Plenty more where that came from during game time manana.

As for the actual game, consider these things virtual locks:

1. Carter will go into full blown Toronto quit mode mid second quarter
2. AJ will abuse whichever inexperienced PF guarding him
3. Doogie Howser will be fired at halftime
4. CB will manhandle the former Wiz 3's (or 4's masquerading as 3's in the case of Jarvis)
5. Yi's handlers will present Thorn with a"trade me or guarantee me at least 83 minutes a game" ultimatum after the game
6. Wiz will win in a mutha flippin BLOWOUT

Even though I feel pretty down coming into the season, I believe we'll pull this one out.

I think we'll win.

but I'm struck by how much the mediots focus on no Gil and
how much they ignore no Haywood. For this game, hopefully
that will be academic.

Nets fan here trying to clear somethings up about our bench.

Brook lopez will be the first big off the bench tonight. Najera isn't playing meaning either Ryan Anderson or Sean Williams (most likely Anderson) will be getting 20 minutes tonight. Stromile swift isn't ever gonna play for us unless it's a blowout and Boone is nice player, there are worse centers starting in this league.

Just a reminder to anyone who might not know, and may be stuck @ work or in an area unable to catch Wiz games.

NBA League Pass Broadband is having a FREE Preview until November 11th, which means you can sign up @ www.nba.com and watch all NBA games Online from now until the 11th. Thereafter you'll only be able to pick games up if you (or someone you know) have an active League Pass cable/directv account.

I've never been this down about the Wizards before the season even tips off.

Last year, the team pleasantly surprised and exceeded expectations by playing good defense the first two months of the season. I don't think they can do it with Thomas at C and with the coach bringing Songaila and Dixon off the bench. I also think they'll miss Haywood's offensive rebounds and his efficient scoring more than they think (unless McGee plays a lot--he can score).

Songaila was miserable in preseason but he's EJ's first big off the bench.

By drafting McGee the Wizards have chosen to pressure Andray, instead of considering him more talented at 22 than Thomas or Songaila.

Dixon's ahead of Young in the rotation to start the year. Young was here last season and he's better than Juan, but that doesn't seem to matter.

EJ' saying he'll stick with his veterans almost guarantees he'll ride Jamison and Butler 40 minutes per each night.

All that sucks and I haven't even watched the first game.
Bye bye Beal.

The good news is that NJ has only 1 consistently good scorer on their team - VC (and that girl is really hot). The bad news is - they'll be playing against the Wizard's defense.
