Hey, The Profit was mentioned in a DC Sports Bog posting as hanging around the arena and working out. Maybe he is the next coach in waiting? ;)

While we're talking about the Wizards, my spies tell me that Ed Tapscott is unlikely to be back as head coach, and that Mavs assistant Dwane Casey is near the top of the list of likely targets.

Item of possibly mild interest -- when they were looking for a defensive coordinator, the first guy they talked with was Casey. They ended up briefly hiring Thibodeau (sp), then went with Ayers. Casey, btw was an assistant in Seattle under Nate McMillan, and exhibited some interest in advanced statistical analysis. Makes sense that he would end up in Dallas, which has an extensive statistical program.

Smart guy, Casey, but can he coach?

http://www.nba.com/coachfile/dwane_casey/index.html

Casey was named head coach of the Timberwolves on June 17, 2005. He was relieved of his coaching duties on Jan. 25, 2007 while in playoff contention with a 20-20 record. In his only stint as an NBA head coach, he earned a 43-59 record (.422).

In 2008, Casey traveled through Europe, attending Euroleague games, practices and studying various basketball concepts. Casey began his NBA coaching career as an assistant for the Sonics, where he served for 11 seasons (starting in 1994-95). He joined the Sonics for the 1994-95 season after spending five years as a head coach in Japan.

Out of high school, Casey’s decision to play at Kentucky for Coach Joe B. Hall helped the Wildcats register a 30-2 record his junior season and capture the 1978 NCAA Championship. Casey was named team captain his senior year and won UK’s all-academic award.

Bottom line: He's over 50 and hasn't won a thing at any level. I will be disappointed if Casey is the hire because I'll see it as bringing in a coach to relate to the players, instead of bringing in a coach that won't be more of the same.

I still say go with Saunders, Joerger, Blatt, Thibodeau, or Laimbeer.

I dunno CCJ, I think that's sort of an unfair characterization of Casey. You're always banging the drum about how there's a wealth of NBA talent out there who would thrive if given the opportunity. Why would it be any different with coaches?

Casey's one head coaching stint was basically for a bad team. If he's a defensive guy who can indeed relate to players -- and in turn get through to them -- why would hiring him be bad?

I think a lot of us -- myself included -- have failed to consider the possibility that EG truly wanted TT to be EJ's defensive assistant, and that's it. I don't know a thing about TT other than what we all talk about. Maybe he doesn't have the personality to be a head guy. Maybe he's weak on the offensive side. We don't know.

ANd as much as I'm with you on my conceptual interest in Blatt and Jorger (along with TT), we don't know that those guys would be good fits, either. Blatt may be too entrenched in the Euro game. Jorger may be addicted to internet porn. We just don't know.

No matter how we all feel about whomever EG hires, only time will tell if it was the right move.

fish, your reply was quicker than my edit--I added Flip to the top of the list, mainly because we do know he's won a lot of games in the NBA and the CBA.

I hear your on Casey and don't disagree. I could be rushing to judgement about a guy who hasn't been given a real opportunity. He coached a crap team without KG.

You're right about TT. Could have a bad head coach personality, although I wonder about how on earth he could be so very effective communicating defensive principles and how he could laud such praise from the likes a Kobe if TT wasn't adept in the people skills department.

As for Blatt, I think he'll stay in Europe.

BUT FOR JOERGER .... EVERYTHING about this kid says future star. Especially with the Grizzlies commiting to Lionel Hollins. Joerger can coach his ass off. So long as he keeps the porn addiction on the DL ...

I remember hearing Casey's name back when we were looking at assistant coaches. I even went to the T-Wolves Board and asked them about him. They basically said that he got a bad wrap as their coach and that he's a pretty solid NBA-level coach.

No idea if he'd fit this team as our head coach, simply because I don't know enough about him other than he's a defensive specialist. However, just from the fact he's known for coaching defense makes me think he wouldn't be the worst candidate.

For some reason Flip seems like more of the same to me. An offensive system type guy, doesn't seem like the hard nosed coach the Wizards need. I think any team with Gilbert, Caron and Antawn will score no matter what, and probably be efficient at it. Unless a mean cuss coach comes in and changes the defense I just don't see this team really getting any better. 1st pick or not. The entire culture of the Wiz needs to change. I don't think Flip can bring that.

Flip doesn't do much for me and I don't think he's the guy.
If he was, why wouldn't they simply have hired him when
they fired EJ? Why wait?

I think it has to be someone who has a job now, probably
an NBA job.

Fratello? Hoo boy. Dunno if he's a good fit for the personnel nor the new uptempo league. Fratello always wanted to minimize mistakes by walking the ball up slowly and playing a grind it out style. Defensive emphasis sure, but slow like watching barnacles grow. Maybe he's changed.

I wanted to bump a list I posted earlier with a few tweaks. I would be especially happy with any one of the top four guys.

1. Tom Thibodeau (defensive guru)
2. Mike Budenholzer (assistant with the Spurs)
3. Bill Laimbeer (tough SOB with rings)
4. Dave Joerger
5. Dave Blatt
6. Flip Saunders
7. Elston Turner (assistant with the Rockets)

Nah. At his last gig in Memphis, he inherited Hubie Brown's uptempo team (10th in Pace the year they won 50 games) and immediately slowed them down. Fratello is absolutely the wrong coach to pair with Arenas, who constantly pushes the pace. Someplace on these boards are the numbers I posted showing that no one in the NBA changed his team's pace more than Arenas. Something like +6 possessions per 48 minutes faster when Gil was on the floor. Fratello usually gets guys to play defense, but he'd be manacles on Gil.

I want a coach who is hungry and on the way up, not a guy who's had his career and looking for one more payday. My mantra is no retreads.

Did he want to do that or was he forced to because his personnel sucked and grinding it out gave him a better chance to win?

Regardless of the overall talent level of the team trying to win with Mike Miller, Rudy Gay and Pau Gasol by playing as slowly as possible was a strategy with questionable efficacy. Fratello might have originally reigned things in because a slow pace allows a good team fewer possessions to be better than his crappy team but there's no evidence that he'd cut things loose if he had a lot of offensive talent. Pass.
