Nick's gonna be traded.

No way he belongs in summer league. They must be giving him all kinds of grief if he's trying that hard to please.

I'm not a Young fan but that guy's been in the league three years and he's got starter talent. NO WAY IN HELL should he be in summer league.

Is Flip coaching? Is this a way of saying that they think Nick needs advanced instructions to even hope to learn Flip?

What on earth is Nick doing playing in summer league?

(PS--He didn't impress last year in summer league IIRC. Why would he this season?)

Penalty for unnecessary roughness. Nick was picked in the 2007 draft, so my rithmatic says he's been in the NBA for 2 years.

Wonderful news about Rice. As you could expect from my previous post in this thread, I'm thrilled to have him on the squad. I know we're a bit guard heavy but I fully expect him to make the roster.

BTW - an undrafted FA I would like to see in a Wiz uni would be Jerel McNeal from Marquette (I know we are guard heavy, but that kid some some good intangibles)

CCJ/LR/Fish, you guys could well end up being right. But I still say you keep N1 for
one more year. For all the negatives about his demeanor and IQ that have been
said, he can put the ball in the bucket as well as anyone on the team. And his
D is better than most of the alternatives at his position that we have. Giving up
a guy going into his 3rd year is asking for him to blow up for someone else. Esp
when he's got tools.

Why has McGuire graduated from summer league? He's not even guaranteed role player minutes next year.

Agreed. Anyone under 25 on this team shouldn't be guaranteed crap.

He was a lot of fun to watch at BC. I'd definitely want him on my side in a pickup game. When he's on, nobody stops him - you can't stop him from penetrating - even though he doesn't have that great acceleration that a Lawson has, and he can get hot from 25 feet out. But he had too many mediocre games. For most of his career, the excuse was - his teammates weren't talented and he had to carry them, but last season - BC had some talent, and he was still inconsistent. That surprised me, because I thought he was primed for a monster year. He's a pure PG - but a pure street PG. With some more structure to his game, I gotta think there's a place for him in the NBA.

Really, McGuire has exactly one thing he needs to improve dramatically: his shot. The confidence to take and make open fifteen footers, the ability to step out and knock down corner threes at a decent clip. It's the single thing that will determine if he's a marginal utility player or top flight glue guy. I'm not sure how much he's going to improve his jumper playing in summer league. He could stay home and spend the time taking a daily 500 shots from each corner, each elbow, and straight away, and be much better off for it.

Now, if he were skipping out to say just hang out with some buddies at the beach, well then that'd be disappointing.

15-18/20 fters he has showed he can hit from sometime around the middle of
last year.

The corner 3s are what he desperately needs to be able to consistently hit.
He should be shooting hundreds of them every day.

I disagree. Besides rebounding and shot blocking, McGuire isn't spectacular at anything on offense. He can't beat his man off the dribble and he can't shoot. He's a good passer and that's basically it. For someone who has next to no offensive game and is not guaranteed minutes the coming year, he should be in summer league, further improving things holding him back.

I agree, that's why I always advocated auditioning McGuires replacement at every opportunity - Summer League, 10-day contracts etc.

Another angle: does a week of summer league games dramatically improve a player? Does it even marginally improve most players? If this were a video game, doing summer league might add 1% to each of his skills. An extra week of ten hour days spent shooting jumpers though, improves his shot say 5%. For someone like McGuire, who has a decent all around game but is a dud at putting the ball in the hole, I think the latter is the smarter play.

And I don't think we can dog the guy too much for not being likely to get many minutes this year: we're going to be rocking one of, if not the best 1-2 combo in the league at the SF spot with Caron and Miller. Even if McGuire improves as much next year as he did last year, he'll still likely be the third best SF on the team.

Well doesn't that kind of make summer league useless for everyone? I agree with you, it's not making him better. But he is getting a chance to show case his game in a real game setting instead of practice. He was a below average starter on the third worst team in the league. He's a below average player at this point in his career.

I'm not really saying that he's going to get better. I just think that a third year player, with a lot of holes in his game should be taking part in every real game setting he possibly can. I don't understand why he's excused when he fits the bill of your average summer league player: a young player looking to make a name for himself and impress coaches with his play in real game scenarios.

Jeff Adrien signed up with Memphis and Dionte Christmas with the 76ers. I'd still go after any of the Gonzaga guys (Pargo, Heytvelt, Micah Downs) or Aminu from GTech. Nice to see Rice in the fold.

I just got back from Vegas for my buddies bachelor party. We were staying at the Encore and it just so happened that the NBA Players Association were having a meeting this past week and a TON of players were there. Saw Haywood, Mason Jr, and then Stevenson today at the airport out of the Wizards current and past there. Talked a little with Wood, Stevenson, and Mason. Shouted out to Wood "Bet you're glad Etan is gone," when he was walking away which had him laughing. Stevenson said his recovery was going really well. Mason Jr's cousin actually came down and sat by our group at the pool and was just shootin it with all of us. All in all, really cool down to earth guys from the little time I spoke with them. One of my buddies saw Louis Amundson walking by us and mentioned to us, "Hey I think Mike Miller just walked past us" and one of the girls from his entourage flipped OUT on him for the mistaken identity. Probably one of the funniest things I saw all weekend.

Sweet, another guard...

http://www.americanchronicle.com/articles/yb/132418549
Jun. 30--ALEX RUOFF IS BACK in Morgantown today packing, cleaning, working out and catching up with friends one last time.

His next stop: Vegas, baby.

The former WVU guard was not drafted in this past Thursday's NBA draft, but that didn't mean the night was an event-free one for him.

"A lot of teams were calling me up during the draft," Ruoff said. "I was pretty much on the phone with my agent until 1:30 in the morning."

Ruoff signed a free agent contract with the Washington Wizards and will report to the NBA summer league next week.

"Washington really was the best fit for me," Ruoff said. "They only had one pick the entire draft, and they ended up trading that pick. There will be a good chance to earn a spot with them."

Personally I don't see that much need for a guy like McGuire to go to summer league at this point. His entire game is focused on being a role player who is set up by the stars on offense and being a defensive specialist. In summer league the defense is an afterthought and McGuire certainly won't have any stars to play off of. I agree with the earlier posters that he's better off staying home and working on his jumper.

Actually I also wish Nick Young wasn't playing. I thought last year's summer league was one of the worst things for him because he was expected to be the scoring star for his team which just reinforced his one-on-one tendencies IMO. He tried to be Gil rather than focusing on what he'll need to do to earn PT this upcoming season (i.e. playing better off the ball). If he goes out there and spends the entire time running off screens then maybe it will do him some good, but if all he does is play isolation basketball it won't help his development in the long run.
