Jazz 2023 Big Boards

Post#1 » by JazzP » Tue Sep 6, 2022 4:51 pm

Hello! I put together a Big Board of prospects. I feel a bit weird trying to place where so many of the incoming freshman might fall on a draft radar, but I suppose that's just how a Big Board works this early on.

I can't wait for games to get underway and to keep updating the board, but for now I feel pretty good about having a nice list of names in place. I feel certain I forgot a few very worthy candidates, especially in International play, but I can't help but think I at least got *mostly* everybody.

I have it separated into 4 categories (Probables, Borderline, "Take a Flyer", and Watch List), which I suppose are mostly akin to tiers but not necessarily always the case, since some players just have more variable stock than others. There are a few "Probables" that are almost certainly 2nd round picks. Meanwhile, I have Yohan Traore leading off the "Borderline" candidate list. Does Traore have arguably higher stock than, say, Armando Bacot? Sure, I buy it, but I think Armando Bacot is a LIKELIER pick to be drafted this year, at least right now. So that's mostly the approach I'm trying to take with the categories. I tried to kinda rank the players in the first 3 categories, but I just have the "Watch List" category listed alphabetically.

Anyways, here it is!

Perrin reclassified. He is going to sunrise christian academy this year and will enroll at Illinois in 2023-2024 so he's a 2024 draft guy now..
1/11/24 The birth of a new Hal. From now on being less combative, avoiding confrontation - like Switzerland :)

Oof. That's unfortunate-- but thank you very much for the update!
I notice that I have a few things wrong on here.

The 3 things that stand out to me are:
-Jordan Hall declared for the 2022 draft, he has a 2-way contract for the Spurs. I have no idea how I forgot that, he absolutely should not still be on this list lol. Not a good look, that one feels like a pretty glaring error.

-Ryan Davis didn't return to Vermont for a 2nd senior season, I thought he did. I think he's still draft eligible, but just signed to play internationally or something (?) I have to look more into it, though I don't think he is all that likely to catch the NBA's eye as anything more than a prospect on the periphery. I do think his shooting/scoring are absolutely real though.

-Josh Mballa transferred to Ole Miss, but I still had him at Buffalo.

I'll take Perrin off as another.

I also found a few more players I felt I should include. A lot of names that are fully in people's mock drafts around here and make sense as high potential breakout prospects (like Alex Fudge, Mouhammed Gueye, and Jalen Warley) and a few that are in a similar position that aren't on as many lists but could end up there all the same (like Bryce Hopkins or Jaylon Tyson).
And just blatant misses like Jalen Bridges or Zvonimir Ivisic.

And a few guys I think I categorized pretty wrong at first, like Eric Dixon. I mean, once the season actually gets underway I think there's opportunity to fix things as I learn more anyway.

But I did already move somethings around- I just want to wait for more news since it's kind of a slow period before I update it here.

And that Perrin info is just that sort of thing!!! Though I have to say, I thought he looked pretty exciting for 2023, so that's quite a disappointment.

Ok, I updated and expanded this a bit, I think I like where it's at for now.
It looks like international basketball is getting underway! I tried to update my international scouting list. It feels pretty rudimentary and I feel sure that I'll need to update and change it around frequently as the sample size grows, but I added a lot of names and I feel a lot better about the net being cast.

Without further ado, here's the 9/26 update!

Re: Jazz 2023 Big Boards

International leagues are underway, and even though the sample size is still pretty darn small, there's an actual sample size now.
I feel like my initial list of international prospects was rather off from where I'd have it now, so I updated it. I think there are still a few pretty bad things in my college list, but since (I think) it's only a few, I'll hold off on fixing that up until the season actually starts and I have more changes to make.

I apologize that I'm just dumping a massive wall of names with pretty little context. I'm not sure it's the smoothest in a forum format (if any?), but I really like trying to just lay everything out and trying to sort it all, and I figured this was the place to put it if anywhere (though maybe nowhere is just as well).

I have no idea what to make of prospects playing ...or rather, NOT playing... in Spain and Greece.
James Nnaji is far and away the oddest case for me to place, but he did get to start one game (against 16 year old phenom Bassala Bagayoko) and looked pretty good. Also, at least he gets like... 3 or 4 minutes a game off the bench to try to look decent, which he has. Guys like Leonardo Okeke, Eli John N'Diaye, Urban Klavzar, and Agustin Ubal? They're not even playing in lower divisions! They're just not playing... at all (so far). It can't help their cases as NBA prospects, but I feel like if they were drawing NBA interest to begin with, they ought to still be on the radar somewhere.

Meanwhile, since I'm going to constantly be updating this thing anyway, I feel a bit less bad about snap decisions.
Mihailo Petrovic!
3 games in and the lowest amount of points he's scored in a game is 27?
He's a gunner, there's probably good reason to expect a drop in efficiency. But he's also adding 7 assists per game, and starting off the season with 3 consecutive hits might start spinning the wheels on the faith bus.

I don't know too much about international leagues, but I notice that there are a LOT of youth playing in Serbia for an adult league. I'll take it with a few grains of salt. That being said, there is no other youth nor adult who starting off the season with anywhere CLOSE to Petrovic's scoring acumen. I think at this point, he can afford a bum game or two and still comfortably draw Trae Young comparisons. It might be harder to convince franchises of that likeness (with good reason), but I think there's some sizable intrigue nonetheless.

As it is, there look like a few draft eligible standouts to open Serbia's season. As much as Mega Bemax has earned a reputation as a team loaded with future superstars, KK Dynamic is walking the walk and making a statement. Their kids are killing it. As for Bemax, I have Nikola Durisic pretty low right now, and I buy into his high potential, but I just want to see a bit more signs of it in action before I'd feel good putting him with some of the other high profile upstarts.
