And if they said "No" then what would you have done? Because Mahinmi, if I am correct, dictated no terms whatsoever. He was able to negotiate for absolutely nothing because the Spurs gave him a total lowball offer they wanted him to REFUSE.

In that situation, there are no bonuses given to get you to sign, because they want you to hate the contract.

So if you were in his place, your "I'd at least make sure to get some incentive compensation in there" would be followed by them asking you if you wanted a call for a taxi to get you to the airport - because you'd be headed back to Europe this season with no NBA deal at all. You wouldn't have gotten anything more from them than 80% each year. There'd be no bonuses, no raises above 80%, just the absolute rock bottom. And an "it's this or Europe" ultimatum.

^ I guess, but considering every other player is practically making 120%, that's a really low offer and you'd think the Spurs would take care of their own 1st rounder, but oh well. I guess it's definitely better than nothing.

And i wasnt assuming anything -- I obviously have a good source, and I'm almost certain its right, but it'd be nice if Larry or someone with league ties would confirm it to gain it a lil credibility. I wasn't just assuming that it jumped from 80% to 100%, though - that obviously would have been dumb on my part

The Spurs would lowball him not because they don't want him, or because of disrespect, but because they don't want him to have joined the league this year. It certainly didn't fit in with their financial plan, and it probably didn't fit in with their basketball plans for him either.

Sham, I'm glad you brought up Mahinmi. My agent friend checked with the salary info he gets from the Players Assn. and found out that Manhinmi gets the following:

07-08 - $625,840
08-09 - $841,000
08-09 - $989,670

So that shows that you can have more that 8% raises in a rookie scale contract.

Hooray! One of my theories was right! I'm gonna ring everyone I know. They're gonna be so jealous.

So apparently a player can get any number between 80% and 120% of the scale amount, in each of those first 3 years, yes? Thanks for the research Bgwizfan and Dunkenstein.

Yes, that's why the CBA lists dollar amounts for each year, rather than listing an amount for just the first year and letting raises take over from there.
