Darvin Ham's Future As Lakers Head Coach In 'Serious Peril'

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Tue Apr 30, 2024 5:55 am

Darvin Ham's future as the head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers is in "serious peril," according to Shams Charania, Jovan Buha and Sam Amick of The Athletic.

Some close to the organization have indicated that Ham's return next season is highly unlikely.

The Lakers plan to reassess the season over the next couple of days before reaching a decision.

Ham made several decisions throughout the season that caused doubt within the Lakers. For example, Ham benching Austin Reaves and D'Angelo Russell during a losing streak after the In-Season Tournament did not sit well with players nor the organization.

There was a sense that Taurean Prince and Cam Reddish were allowed to play through their mistakes, unlike Reaves, Russell, and Rui Hachimura.

Many within the Lakers felt that Ham rarely blamed his own schemes, game plans, or rotations.

Ham signed a four-year contract with the Lakers in 2022.

I don't think anyone is surprised by this. Don't see him getting another shot at coaching either.

His timeout management was a mess in this crucial game.

How many total coaches dismissed under LeBron will this make?

Now the question is who will replace Ham. Terry Stotts? Not many available names.

Offer Lebron 70m as a player/coach. Of all the players in the NBA I think he can do it. It will add to his legacy and he has potential as a top tier coach after he retires.

Bill Russell did it, it’s time to try it again with Lebron.

Lakers should just draft his son and make LeBron the Player-Coach. I mean the dude wants to be the first in everything and I'm sure the NBA will accomodate his wishes.

LeBron has a great mind and gets the most out of players, why not it will be great for the NBA, him and Bronny playing together coaching his son is the stuff of legends

But who will they fire when they fail to make the play-in?

Ham just isn't experienced enough to handle a contender. Who they need to go after imho is Mike Budenholzer, Mark Jackson or maybe Jeff Van Gundy.

Pelinka also sucks and has sucked. Vincent was a bad pickup. They still didn't get a true center even though they got swept last year so they ended up losing to the Nuggets again. AD can't effectively play both ends of the floor at a high level for 48 minutes. Honestly, no one can do that. AD also played his best basketball when he had a true center starting alongside him. Cousins in New Orleans and Dwight/McGee in 2020.

The running small NBA never really worked in terms of contending for a championship. Even the GSW had a true center alongside Green during their championship runs with the exception of their last one in 2022 when they had Looney. Championships are mainly won by teams with true centers for the most part. AD has gone on record in the past saying he doesn't like playing center but Pelinka just doesn't seem to understand the concept.

This was inevitable seeing some of the body language from the Lakers during the series. That being said, they are going to need to do more than just fire Ham. They need some roster upgrades for everyone who isn't Lebron, AD or Reaves.
