Portland Timbers hoping new backline pieces come together to solve defensive problems

Image

When Portland Timbers fans say hello to their team again Sunday with the start of the Simple Invitational preseason tournament at Providence Park – their first game action in the Rose City since last season – they’ll see plenty of familiar faces.

There will be, however, some new players on the field – in very important positions.

Portland shined a light on their most glaring weakness of 2014 – their defense – and brought in longtime Real Salt Lake center back Nat Borchers and Ghanaian international goalkeeper Adam Kwarasey, while parting ways with veteran ‘keeper Donovan Ricketts, center back Pa Modou Kah and left back Michael Harrington.

Needless to say, integrating two new players in the back is one of the main goals for the Timbers this preseason.

Portland have also been without Designated Player center back Liam Ridgewell for the first three weeks of camp as he completed a short-term loan with Championship side Wigan FC. Coupled with the fact that outside backs Jorge Villafana and Alvas Powell are two players who only recently inherited starting roles with the Timbers, and it’s safe to say Portland’s backline is a wild card.

“Very seamless,” Timbers head coach Caleb Porter said of the integration of Borchers and Kwarasey. “They’re good professionals, they’re experienced.”

Borchers and Kwarasey joined the team at the start of preseason camp and saw action with the starting group in both preseason games – a 1-1 draw against the Houston Dynamo and a scoreless draw with San Jose Earthquakes – in Tucson, Ariz.

"They came in and adjusted really fast," Villafana said of Borchers and Kwarasey. "They’re great players. They’re players who are going to help the team improve and take the team to a new level."

Borchers lined up next to Argentine Norberto Paparatto, who finished last season as a starter, but the former RSL man will likely usher in his partnership with Ridgewell in Portland’s tournament opener Sunday against the Vancouver Whitecaps.

“As a new player, I think there was already a lot of chemistry here,” Borchers said. “I think, for one, you’ve got a team with an identity and a style of play and a good group already, a foundation. So coming in, you could already see a lot of those connections and relationships established. And I think that hopefully with Liam coming back… we can get better.”

Portland Timbers confirm Ben Zemanski ACL injury, ponder potential replacements

Image

The back luck that plagued the Portland Timbers in the final month of the 2014 season apparently has carried over.

Midfielder Ben Zemanski will join Will Johnson and Diego Valeri on the shelf to start the season after he went down with what was later confirmed by head coach Caleb Porter as a torn ACL in the 23rd minute of the Timbers' opening match, a 1-0 loss to the Vancouver Whitecaps, in the Simple Invitational preseason tournament Sunday evening at Providence Park.

Zemanski was expected to replace Johnson, who suffered a broken leg on Sept. 27 against Toronto FC, in the starting lineup as a defensive midfielder alongside Diego Chara. Valeri also tore his ACL in the Timbers' season finale last year.

“It’s tough,” Timbers center back Nat Borchers said. “You never want to see guys go down like that, especially a player like that, like Ben, who’s the heart and soul of this team.”

Zemanski crumpled to the turf contesting a 50-50 ball and was replaced by Timbers veteran Jack Jewsbury.

“We do have depth,” Porter said. “We’ve got a couple of options, and we’ll look at those options. And we still have a couple of weeks to circle the wagons and figure out how to manage it.”

Jewsbury, who has been with the club since they joined MLS in 2011, played as a central midfielder his first two-and-a-half seasons in Portland before moving to right back early in Porter’s tenure. Jewsbury was expected to back up Alvas Powell at right back this season.

Porter also mentioned recently drafted midfielder Nick Besler and George Fochive, a 2014 SuperDraft pick, as possible replacements.

“I thought he did pretty well,” Porter said of Jewsbury. “We do have other options … if we keep the same system.”

I am familiar with the new goalie Adam Kwarasey from Norway who is also a Ghanian citizen and plays for their national team. He was one of the better keepers in the Norwegian league the past couple of years and it is on par with the MLS. He is now entering his prime and should be solid for the Timbers. Ironically both Adin Brown and Troy Perkins also came to the MLS from the Norwegian league.

Note that Timbers fans blow any fanbase in Scandinavia out of the water. The experience at Civic Stadium (or whatever they call it these days) is pretty amzaing and is probably on par with the top 5% of European soccer. The on pitch product is a bit lacking though but that is an acknowledged work in progress.

Well I hope you keep following the team this season, and provide us with some updates. Here is the projected starting xi, do you feel it's strong enough to compete in MLS once again?

I agree Portland has one of the best fan bases in the world. I'm always impressed with their displays on game days.

That should be a good starting lineup. That leaves Uhruti, Fernandez, Zemanski (injured) and Potapenko to come off the bench. There's some new kid from Columbia who's supposed to be pretty good, as well so we'll see if he gets any playing time or not, particularly with Johnson and Valeri still out. Nagbe [u]MUST[/u} score this season. I know he gets fouled more than anyone in the league (statistically), but he still needs to find a way to put the ball in the back of the net. Very frustrating last season!

There's also some myth that the Timbers only play well in odd years and play horribly in even years. In 2014, they played horribly. In 2013, they played fantastic. Hmmm, is there any truth to that myth?

With the start of the 20th Major League Soccer season just fives days away, a new era has begun on RealGM with the creation of an MLS forum.

Come discuss the Timbers on the NEW MLS Forum.

Crazy that Borchers will be on the other end against the two CBs he spent his entire RSL tenure with.

This has been a fast paced game.

Should open up in the second half.

I think our pace is going to drive opposing teams nuts this season...and to think, we're playing without Valeri, Johnson, and Chara right now.

Can't believe no one has scored yet.

This game has been pretty wide open.

Portland just had three chances to score in extra time and got nothing from it.

Considering we were without our top 3 holdings midfielders (Johnson, Chara, Zemanski) and our best player (Valeri), a tie against RSL is still a result to be proud of.
