I get that this season was a wire-to-wire disaster, but dang, let's at least wait until November to give up on next year too.

The operative word for me heard in his exit interview was "linger". He said his back issue is not something that lingers according to the back specialist(s), best that money can buy.

He would not arrive at that impression of his health/longevity if not valid medically, or else it would jeopardize his career.

My tea leaf says they took precautions with him because the season was lost.

He or LaMelo could've played, but not worth worsening an otherwise manageable condition requiring rest and light exercise therapies.

We won't be drafting a big.

Idk why anyone would say this even in a joking manner. It's very untrue.

I have hope for Mark. Healthy. When he's healthy we can definitely be a more complete and formidable team. I can't wait to see him on the floor again.

I simply can't bet, wish or hope that Mark comes back healthy. The center position must be addressed in some way this offseason. Pick your flavor, but the depth chart has to be reinforced or we will be staring at a 10 seed play in at best.

If Mark does return healthy, you have depth, which isn't a bad thing. I would make a run at Hartenstein or Claxton and use the top 5 pick on a wing. This would mean moving on from Miles.

The Duke product started feeling something in his lower back during the team’s last-second victory in Brooklyn on Nov. 30. Though he appeared in two of the next three games, Williams had to depart in the third quarter of a home game against Toronto nine days after the initial pain began. “I was like, ‘This isn’t normal,’” said Williams, recounting his final outing of the season on Dec. 8. “I can’t pinpoint exactly falling or getting hit or something. It was more of like an after-the-game thing when the adrenaline [of playing] went away. It’s not something I like doing, sitting out, but this isn’t a surgery situation or anything like that. It’s a matter of getting back to being comfortable enough to play, moving how I move, and jumping how I jump.”

Given how notoriously tricky back injuries can be sometimes, especially for big men, Williams’ rehab has been handled with the absolute utmost precaution. The absolute last thing he or the Hornets want is for this injury to flare up again or trickle to somewhere else in his lower body.

“I’m totally going to be okay,” said Williams at exit interviews. “Right now, it’s about building my strength back up so it’s not a lingering issue. I’m able to shoot some, do more in the weight room. A lot of stuff I’m doing now is focusing on my core, getting that stronger. Before, I was trying to avoid overhead lifting, but now I’m starting to do a little bit more of that. Just building back up to basketball activities outside of shooting, so playing live and getting back in shape.”

Take it for what you will, it seems like Mark is lifting, shooting so hopefully he is able to get to live scrimmaging at some point this summer.

Strange that there’s just no transparency on the actual injury. He hasn’t had surgery and is saying that to downplay the concern on the issue but he also doesn’t sound particularly close to playing NBA basketball and it’s been 6+ months? Doesn’t add up

Yeah doesn't sound good. I think we go FA hunting for a center. Clingan sounds good, but I doubt he will be available at #6.

Exactly why i said yesterday we should draft clingan if he’s on the board our pg and our c can’t be relied on. We can’t replace melo but we sure can at least find a players as good or comparable to mark so we aren’t stuck with Richard’s eating up big mins. He’s a put back guy and does nothing else 3rd center and nothing higher.

I’ve been saying this for some time. Mark would clearly know his back ailment diagnosis by now, so is he choosing to not reveal it, or is his situation still tenuous. Meaning…like we’ve seen with many athletes in many sports, back problems can be very complicated, hard to treat or heal, and ultimately chronic. Since his comments would make it seem it is not structural (disc/spinal deficiency), the issues lay with one of two areas:

1 - Supporting Architecture, meaning ligaments, tendons and muscles. The ligaments could have been getting micro damage building up over time, till more severe stress or trauma from playing stuck during that game. A really big man requires a lot more work from his back than smaller players. No wonder he is being told to lift weights to increase his strength. Muscles and strength is needed to support those ligaments and tendons (isn’t it LaMelo?).

2. Nerve damage. This would be even more worrisome. The primary treatment for this is rest and time, to allow nerve regeneration therapy efforts to work. We know he got a lot of that, but we also know he was doing some basic on-court stuff within a couple months of being out. Hopefully this isn’t the issue.

Hate to think it, but here’s a WORSE CASE SCENARIO: some type of degenerative back disease, either inherited or due to some trauma/injury that was not properly treated and healed. Very doubtful, as Mark just wouldn’t be speaking so positively about getting back in his exit interview if he knew it was only going to get worse.

This is why I’m pro Clingan at 6.

I have more hope of clingan playing 12 to 15 years than I do of mark playing 7 to 9. I am a big fan of mark and hope it's something the new staff will be ontop of. Clingan is to good to pass on at 6. He could go 2 or 3.

Clingan is close to 300 pounds, has a game very reliant of jumping, and has a history of foot problems...this the scary thing about relying on 7+ footers who aren't slim for their size like Gobert and Wemby. They are just literally not built to play heavy minutes in today's high paced game.

7rpg is concerning given his frame and build. If he's that athletic and mobile he should be getting 10rpg vs much smaller less physical college kids.

Well... I know somebody that averaged 12.2 reb last year..... that is even bigger!!!!

I hope Mark returns to full health. Guys this big, health is an issue. If you can have a backup, you should do it. I am for 3 centers. Edey, Mark and Nick Richard.
