He is, and he's better than our supposed "all-star" PG, but he's no one I'd build a team around.

It's almost like there is room for enough nuance to say clearly he's a starter, and a good one, and that there are concerns about his ability to lead a team to real contender status. Not sure why the intentional framing like this when the OP knows the question he is asking is not a common narrative here or anywhere.

Very good offensive player--one of the best in the Association. Imperfect player and its okay when people say that. Doesn't mean they hate him or hate the Hawks. Despite that being a belief around some parts for some reason.

It's debatable, he has a very good roster around him and couldn't even sneak into the playoffs.

I don't think he and Dejounte are a good fit. The Hawks should trade Dejounte for a 3&D shooting guard.

there are a lot of PGs better than Trae running a team and making everything work so that the team is better. if Trae is as big of a star that they WERE saying about him he'd be a lock for the playoffs every year, especially in the East. he's not THAT guy, at least not yet. i think there is another level that Trae can reach but i am afraid he probably won't reach it.
raf1995 wrote:I just don’t think he has that kind of potential. I think we will regret not trading him for a haul in a few years when he’s a mid-tier starter with nice playmaking and defense and a shaky jumper.

I'm not a fan of Trae, at all.

However he is absolutely a Top 30 PG in the league.

How many of the top PG's that he's compared too have made the playoffs every year though?

There is zero question that he is an all-star-level offensive player in the RS. His issues comes from trying to maintain scoring volume in the playoffs at his size, and from his defense. But his playmaking remains very clearly high-end even when he's having a rough go with his shooting.

This is an odd question. "Is he worthwhile as a focal player" is a legit question; "is he a starting caliber player" is just non-sensical garbage.

He's starter worthy but is he a top 2 player on a championship team? Trae seems destined to be an all star on non contending teams. His ECF run may end up being the pinnacle of his career as the franchise player.

It's why many people don't see him as the guy to pair up with Wemby despite the obvious trade options to make it happen.

I changed the title since I wasn't specific enough for you.

Top 4...3, but no higher than that, or you're just asking for trouble.

Troll how? It's a legitimate question. People always bring up his defense, stature, and inefficiency on offense. Usually if a player has that many weaknesses, he comes off the bench/ played in small doses or doesn't play in the league at all.

Claxton
Bridges
Cam Johnson
KCP

That's the type of starting lineup he's excel in. A rim protecter plus other defensive minded wing players so you can hide him a bit on defense.

Vucevic
KD
Grayson Allen
Booker

Those four guys he'd be better off coming off the bench with and being a super sub 6th man because there are only so many balls to go around.

that's the wrong question to ask, the answer is obvious.....the real question is can you win a championship with Young as the #1 guy.

Trae Young is a great star for a team going nowhere.

Unless you consider the play-in game better than nowhere.

In Trae Young's 6 seasons with the Hawks they have finished at ( 1 5th seed, 3 Play-in games, and 2 times eliminated from the playoffs).
