On a fundamental level, it was an attempt to out-talent the rest of the NBA.
That was an achievable goal in 2010. Super-teams didn't fully exist as a concept yet outside of Boston, whose three best players were all in their mid-30s. The league wasn't nearly as deep, and it wasn't as smart, either. The 2011 Rockets had a top-five offense with Kevin Martin as their leading scorer because they were one of the few teams to optimize their shot-selection.
The Suns tried a 13-year-old trick in an older, wiser league. Miami's investment in three stars was unprecedented at the time.
