Is Trae Young NBA Starting Caliber to you?

Post#1 » by ChuckChilly » Thu May 2, 2024 5:50 pm

Most of the takes on here is that Trae's defense and overall basketball IQ is so bad that it completely negates any of the positives he brings. This led me to question if most people think he's starter worthy or even a NBA player at all. Whats your take?

He has started every game he's played in for his entire NBA career. So yes, he's a starter. You weren't aware of this?

That's the wrong way to look at it

Clearly he's a starting caliber player, the question is is he good enough to build around, and if not can he fit as a second star next to a ball dominant 1st option?

I would say both are tbd, but trending no on the 1st.

Yes, he plays for the Atlanta Hawks and is their starting point guard.
Hope this helps.

he's obviously a starter. But it's also obvious, he's not a #1 on a true contender. He needs a specific team around him to be successful and he very likely needs to be the second or third best player on a team.

Yes, he does start for an NBA team currently.

I'd say no to both right now. I don't know who convinced him he is the second coming of Steph but his shot selection is horrible. He's an elite playmaker. If someone convinces him to play like a traditional point and stop chucking he could be a borderline star on a team that is packed with long defenders.

We'll find out next season when he's the second fiddle to Paolo Banchero and is the starting PG on the Orlando Magic. :D

I changed the title since I wasn't specific enough for you.

If you think he's not, you're just hating.

He's still a solid all star caliber player.

Is he a huge defensive liability? Yes.

Does that negate what he brings on offense? No

But he requires you a good rim protector to cover his defensive deficiencies. Someone like Gobert or Wemby would help him a lot.

His ideal role would be a 2nd option but primary facilitator. He is a good passer/playmaker but he isn't good enough to be the primary scorer.

To me he is the third best player in the NBA - Luka and Embiid are comfortably ahead of him.

The Answer is obviously.

The actual question should be - is Trae young worth $43M/year. Or will he basically become a Bradley Beal situation where you can't win with someone like him taking up that much of the salary cap.

But whether he is 1st option or 2nd, it doesn't change his supposed weaknesses. Which is why I made this thread. Im basically asking if a player can be a regular starter (on a playoff team) if he is a "complete defense liability".

Yes shouldn't even be a question.

Easily a starter. But he's trending in the wrong direction. Two years ago he was an all star level player, but all of his impact metrics have dropped every year since then. Now his impact is what you'd hope from a normal starter, rather than the all star impact that he's being paid for.

He is a starter but he needs to be a 3rd banana.

You throw trae on the magic with paolo, franz and jalen and I think he flourishes. Playing off of paolo and franz and jalen covering him on defense I think it works. But I don't think Atlanta would trade him within the division like that.

Trae Young is kind of a weird case where he proved both his pre-draft fans and haters correct

No. People on here and even TV analyst say that "little" players can't survive in today's league, especially if they can't defend. Trae was voted the most overrated player by NBA players. How could this not be a legitimate question?
