First Take: Embiid the only MVP to not reach the Conference Finals

Post#1 » by ___Rand___ » Fri May 3, 2024 2:26 pm

Heard it on First Take. Joel Embiid is the ONLY MVP to have never been to a conference final.

Just a remarkable record.

I feel like I'm built to play devil's advocate when I read incendiary threads but I can't do that on this one because that's actually pretty wild.

Deceiving stat. How many of those players reached the CF before winning the award? I know Westbrook did and ever since he won it, he has never been to the CFs since.

Yet!

That was such a low, scumbag move in retrospect. He deserves everything he gets

I don't see how it's not all downhill from here for him. I can't see how a guy injury plagued throughout his 20s won't deal with even more issues in his 30s?

He may get a ring still in a Bill Walton 86 Celtics roleplayer way on some team.

I'm far from an Embiid fan but he was not the problem in that series. He was the Sixers best player by a large margin against the Knicks.

I've had that in my sig for months.

Good to see the word spread.
** Embiid is the only MVP in NBA history to never make a conference final
** Philly won multiple playoff games without MVP Embiid
** Luka made the playoffs without Brunson
** LeBron missed the playoffs with Davis
** Steph missed the playoffs with Klay

He has had many scapegoats: Ben Simmons, Doc Rivers, James Harden

Its not like hes losing to Juggernauts too, even with his stacked team he can't do the minimum

He's still got Tobias Harris left to roll under the bus.

This is the kind of stat that's only interesting post-retirement. I don't care about legacy records of this type when a player is mid-career.

I was about to say maybe the comparison isn't fair, since players could have won MVP and then made the Conference Finals 2+ seasons later, something which Embiid obviously hasn't had the chance to do yet...but no. Quick glance at the past 40 years of MVPs and that doesn't seem to be a factor.

Embiid last year

"People have been talking about who has the most pressure to win. People want to mention me," Embiid said. "I'm not at the top of that list. I'm not a two-time MVP, I've never made first team All-NBA, I've never won anything. So why is there pressure on me to do something when there are guys that have won two MVPs, a bunch of MVPs and haven't done anything either?

Embiid winning the MVP over Jokic wasn't historically bad. Many of his backers sincerely believed, and many still do believe, he is a better player than Jokic. That isn't the case for Derrick Rose winning the MVP in 2011 or AI in 2001. But the 2023 MVP race was one of the uglier races for MVP. And Embiid actively played a role in it.

It was terrible because of the just completely made up excuses some made to justify it. "well jokic let off the gas once his team had the 1 seed locked". Just wild takes like that....

One of the worst things superstar has said in recent NBA history. Is there something worse? I wonder did he realize what he said there after he say it? Or does he think that qoute was fine, when I heard it, I thought it was a joke at first.
