He's as close to career ending injury without being officially declared as you can get. He absolutely accepts that PO (and is why players want POs to begin with). He was effective when healthy, it's sad to see his career riddled with what-ifs.

There's a scale of what will happen though throughout the season..
60-80 GP and no recurring similar injury - in line for a contract of 1+ years. No team is going to guarantee 3 years. Think ~2/25 TO, but a games played clause like Bertans has... don't mind the cap hit if he's healthy for critical moments at that %age
20-60 GP - range of small injuries or a recurring issue of his knee, yet still production on court - one-year-prove-it-contract like (1/~10M), or a 1+1 TO at best.
0-20 GP - or poor basketball play throughout year = vet min, sabbatical for 1yr to heal more, or simply retire.

My guess is he gives it one last go towards the end of this season to secure a final contract, but that ultimately he’s done.

From my understanding, AKME and maybe even Lonzo would like that, but ownership refuse to do it, because if they get career ending contract removal, they would need to pay everything, where now they get ton from set insurance.

We want to judge every front office for how well team is doing, but often their hands get tied by owners, or they get forced to fo things they know is terrible. Similar like most cases, movie making for example, studio execs often get far more say than moviemakers themselves, and then we get big blockbusters by good names, but wonder what the hell happened.

No GM likes to give that, but in negotiations, you need to submit sometimes. Can come back and bite you, but other option can too. Jalen Brunson has player option, imagine you are Knicks and you put your foot down and Brunson walks away...
