Magic go star-chasing

Post#1 » by SUPERVILLAIN » Mon May 6, 2024 3:21 pm

Magic will enter this offseason with huge cap space. They will be able to offer a fat contract to star players. And it looks like they are seriously considering it. Magic have been linked with Paul George and Klay Thompson.

But I think it's unlikely that Magic can attract A-level star like Paul George and LeBron James. Paul George is already playing in his hometown. LeBron has publicly said he'd rather retire than getting traded to Orlando. So they might have to settle for B-level star or lower. I could be wrong though.

Who should be Magic's main target?

Note: The listed options are subjectively selected by me. I chose players who I believe would be open to go to Orlando if the money is right.

I do agree that they should be aggressive in taking that next step, but half of the names of your list barely move the needle as a role player.

I think Pascal and OG are off the table as they’re going to get whatever they want from their respective teams. No way Indy and NY let those guys walk at this point.

I think Orlando will start looking into trade opportunities for a starting guard to pair with Suggs first before they decide what to do in FA. If there are no trades to be made, who they go after is anyone’s guess but they are always talking about ‘high character’ guys so that will come into play. They wouldn’t be my first options but I would bet Hield and Jones definitely get contacted to gauge interest.

This could be a dangerous offseason for Orlando. When a team that isn't a desirable FA destination has a ton of cap space, overpaying is simply going to happen. You hope the contracts aren't too bad. Russell seems like a good option to start with.

Siakam and OG aren't going to be available (and honestly aren't very good fits).

Klay Thompson makes some sense but he's not a short creator so a bulk of the creation will still fall on Paolo/Franz.

Malik Monk would be an upgrade to their current rotation but he's not moving the needle.

A significant move is only happening via trade, the FA market isn't very appealing. Good thing for the Magic is they have assets to make a move. Could trae young be an option for them?

Wheres the Paul George option lol He honestly makes the most sense. They need a go-to guy in the half court that can be a table setter but who is also solid on D (fits their culture and identity)

I read trading a pick for Duncan Robinson and absorbing his salary. He's on the books for $19 mil next season and only partial guarantee of $9.9 million in 25-26. Not as big name of other guys, but less risky than dumping a bunch long term of money on someone like Klay Thompson.

They need a playmaking scorer next to Suggs and shooting. If they added Robinson it would be a low risk move to help with shooting.

Derozan is going to be 35 next year. Not sure how much you want to sink in to him long term, but atleast he could help them get some buckets.

This! Please this.

But really they need a real pg that can get easier shots for them. Who can also shoot. We can also trade you cp3 as a filler until that player becomes available.

See if you can overpay IQ enough for Toronto not too match, then look to trade for a trade like Garland / Simons / Murray

Ok? Having positive opinions of a team doesn't mean he's going to sign with them. Paul George is 34, and he grew up in Los Angeles county. If he's going to leave Los Angeles it's going to be for a team that can legitimately contend immediately with him. He's not going to leave behind the LA lifestyle to live in Orlando because he likes this young up-and-coming Orlando team. Philly and OKC are the only teams who can acquire him and contend immediately, but not sure OKC will be too interested in signing him to a big deal.

Kick the tires on Paul George first. Then try for OG. Those two would move the needle.

If those two options don't work out, and they probably won't, resist the urge to blow the whole wad on an overpay. Use the cap space in trades to absorb bad contracts for future picks, continue to gradually build with your current core (who are very promising) with the additional options of using those picks to either draft talented and cost-controlled players down the road so you have depth when Paolo/Franz get paid or package them for the next major disgruntled superstar.

I've seen too many Hornet rebuilds go wrong when the team got antsy with cap space and blew it all on an overpay of a mediocre 'star' (Batum, Hayward, Al Jefferson) which put a hard ceiling on the team's potential. Don't' skip steps, Orlando.

We are going to pay OG so there is no chance that the Magic can get him. I guess they can try for PG.

Klay is awful at this point.

To me he is the third best player in the NBA - Luka and Embiid are comfortably ahead of him.

Sh*t. You're exactly right. This golden opportunity could turn into years of nightmare if they acquire the wrong guy.
