Current Butler isn't worth a max extension, extended him would set the franchise back

After LBJ's departure, Riley has taken a more pro-active approach. He knows exactly what Butler can do, got him anyway, and is willing to cut bait sooner rather than Butler antics in the locker room later.
Riley publicly declared Butler's diminishing returns on and off the court. I'd be surprised if Butler's on the Heat roster this upcoming season.
Butler could be a nice piece for some contenders

To me Riley signed old Lowry to a deal to make Butler happy. He doesn't want to do that again and is looking for a way out.

Yeah, Butler and Lowry are twins. Old, competitve dudes past their prime, who play hard AF and embody Heat Culture... but only on the court.
Off the court, they are self-centred, egotistical pr**ks who are hell-bent on extracting every last penny from their respective teams and extending their career earnings until they drop.
The Heat's experience with Lowry might've colored their viewpoint on Butler.

Maybe the Magic? They could use more scoring in the playoffs. Or the Cavs if Mitchell leaves. The teams that really have the draft picks are OKC and Utah though.
