Current Butler isn't worth a max extension, extended him would set the franchise back

After LBJ's departure, Riley has taken a more pro-active approach. He knows exactly what Butler can do, got him anyway, and is willing to cut bait sooner rather than Butler antics in the locker room later.

Riley publicly declared Butler's diminishing returns on and off the court. I'd be surprised if Butler's on the Heat roster this upcoming season.

Butler could be a nice piece for some contenders

Yeah. But short contracts only. He seems to wear out his welcome sooner than later but wants to get paid in full. Teams are wiser to these types of maneuvering now. He has to show availability in POs and if his track record is working against him as he's older then something will have to give, either per year or length of contract.

Miami would be better off pursuing a S&T anyway at this point. I would be scared to death having him on a max contract going forward.

Yeah, Butler and Lowry are twins. Old, competitve dudes past their prime, who play hard AF and embody Heat Culture... but only on the court.

Off the court, they are self-centred, egotistical pr**ks who are hell-bent on extracting every last penny from their respective teams and extending their career earnings until they drop.

The Heat's experience with Lowry might've colored their viewpoint on Butler.

I wonder if a reunion with the 76ers or Timberwolves would make sense, or Thibbs in NY.

Maybe the Magic? They could use more scoring in the playoffs. Or the Cavs if Mitchell leaves. The teams that really have the draft picks are OKC and Utah though.

Why is this a negative? Do you advise your loved ones to take less from their employers? Do you turn down your annual raises at work?

It's fun to think what Herro and Adebayo could do with a real high volume scorer. Jimmy can be that, but he usually isn't. Problem is, the Heat will never get a #1 option return for Jimmy from another team. A depth package is more realistic, but without going too crazy into trade scenarios I just don't think the Heat will ever get a return that makes sense for the impact Butler can potentially have. I also don't think Butler is going to magically become healthier next season, so even if he starts trying every single night it probably won't make a difference. The writing may be on the wall for Butler in Miami.

A depth package might not be a death sentence to the team. Getting a decently good player might on top of a few extra roleplayers be better than 1 superstar. "Good all the time", potentially can be much better than "Great sometimes".

Butler was this beloved god to them for years after taking them to two finals.

Crazy how the relationship is breaking down between both of them like this.

Riley is king in Miami. People who never lived down there don't understand that. They'll get players because of the weather and Spo. Doesn't have to be Butler. But this probably blows over.

Timberwolves say yes to a KAT in a heartbeat but does KAT fit on the Heat?

Butler wanted to leave because Riley hurted his feeling by stating the truth? Thought Jimmy is a tough guy and wanted to win.

Butler is a fraud. Dude plays 60 games, puts his team in horrible position for the playoffs, and then acts like he can bail them out.

Last year a fluke. Giannis and Tatum injuries. He coasted lol season, and got hurt playing in a game they wouldn’t have had to play if he played harder.

PG13 S&T for Jimmy, Jimmy and Kawhi have similar time tables.

Riley doesn't do second place. Jimmy isn't the savior of Miami who led them to 2 finals appearances in Rileys' eyes. He's the guy who couldn't get it done twice when it mattered the most and is constantly in and out of the lineup, even in the playoffs. Dude had to have been LIVID watching Jimmy run his mouth like that days after his team got bounced in the first round

Ramona Shelburne today:

"(Riley) says what needs to be said. This is how they've been feeling in Miami for quite some time.... this has been building up over the last year or two... (Butler) wasn't available for much of the year and I think there's this sense in Miami, like, if you are going to be not on the court, not available, if you're sometimes hard to deal with in a team setting... you better be worth it. You better be worth it when it matters."
