NBA Should Give Regular Season Awards Right When Season Ends

Post#1 » by shrink » Tue May 7, 2024 1:28 pm

I understand that the NBA wants to extend the news cycle by slowly handing out the regular season awards over the following two weeks, but it’s a bad idea. The playoffs are so important and overwhelming, that it makes people question the awards.

For example, Rudy Gobert will be a fitting recipient of the Defensive Player of the Year Award later today. He’s a tremendous individual defender, and is the proud papa of the Wolves amazing team defense. However, this morning the defense talk will be about all the other players not named Gobert.

And Nikola Jokic is the right call for regular season MVP after another dominating season. However, this morning, he wasn’t even the MVP of last night’s important play off game.

Regular season awards will have more impact, and consensus, if they are given out right when the season ends.

Worse yet, we all know who has won the awards by now anyway. So it's not even a good news story.

Similarly, Wemby finally got his ROY award this last week during the playoffs, and many people's first reaction was to notice that Wemby is not participating in these exciting playoffs. And at the same time Wemby got the award, we had the #2 rookie, Holmgren, accumulating good stats in multiple playoff wins, further diminishing the news impact of the Wemby ROY announcement.

Absolutely. When Dirk got his MVP and then was cooked in the playoffs it was amazing.

Yep agreed. At the very latest we should know before the 1st round ends. They should start announcements during the play-in. One a day or even every second day.

That would change the outcome of the playoffs.. players would go in and maybe not even play as hard or just in a different mood kuz they already won something.. that’s not prolly why they don’t doe.. it’s kuz the longer they wait and see how things play out the clearer the choice of who deserves to win gets.. look what happened to dirk that one year the whole team didn’t even show up in the first round

I agree 100%, all of the awards should be handed out before the end of the first round.

i think it would be hilarious if the NBA decided to give Jokic his MVP after he's out of the playoffs

I always enjoyed the MVP presentation in game 1/3 in front of the player’s home crowd.

Should be during the first round, no need to keep people waiting.
