Byron Scott: Lebron should be player/coach for the Lakers

Thoughts? He is the closest player to being a coach already. Many times he overrides the coach.

How can you have a coach who is also your teammate? If you argue with him, is he going to DNP you? If you don’t pass to him, is he going to bench you? Where do you draw the line? Also, if the coach plays poorly, nobody will listen to him as he wouldn’t have any respect.

There are already jokes about LeGM, this would take the unprofessionalism to another level and make the Lakers into a joke. LeBron would probably be a decent coach, but he would need to retire first.

Player coaches haven't been allowed in the NBA for a long time.

After the salary cap was instituted in 1984–85 season, the NBA has prohibited teams from employing a player-coach.

Been a minute since any major US sports has had a player/coach. The problem is that superstars rarely make good head coaches even when they don't have to also play the game. Will not vouch.

It's not allowed anymore but he's right. LeBron won't get himself fired. He's too powerful for any coach nowadays.

Love it when talking heads don’t know the rules of the league they cover

Maybe he’d finally hold himself accountable for standing around on defense

I think he said it sarcastically because Lebron is always influencing decisions and making others the scapegoat and then there'd be no scapegoat but himself.

That being said, I don't think Scott's proposal is entirely serious, regardless of the cap rules. His statement is less about hiring LeBron as a basketball no-brainer and more about holding LeBron publicly accountable for the personnel and strategic decisions he's influencing behind the scenes. LeBron wasn't yet a Laker when Scott was fired but you can't help but hear a note of bitterness in there about the way he may have feel he was given short shrift.

Regardless — fun idea to think about entirely hypothetical until LeBron retires or the league changes their rules.

He's just mad that LeBron said he doesn't want him as the next coach

he's not going to fire himself

he's bullet proof cuz lal wont fire him either

he can sub himself at will

he will be doing something mj never did

he'll root himself into the laker culture by extending his stay there and thus stand next to magic, elgin, west, and kareem. it's a club he'd die to get into

it is the PERFECT move for him since he's always orchestrated his career by inserting himself wherever he wanted

I've always wondered how a player-coach would work since it hasn't happened in a long time, so while I think this is a bad idea and would never happen I'd love to see it

I think if Byron Scott could end the war in Ukraine or re-unite 7 Balkan countries into Yugoslavia, he could be a great choice to coach one of these teams to the gold medal.

Wouldn't that be a demotion for player/GM LeBron?

He would keep all 3 roles. As well as simultaneously being half the teams agent, that way you know he’s got everyone’s best interests at heart
