Is Derrick White a max player?

I haven't seen much of the Celtics aside from Game 1 of our series, but White looks like more than a role player. I've seen people rave about his all-around game.

That said, a max contract is kind of rich for a guy like him. I'm not saying he doesn't deserve it, but it could be a risky move to give it to him.

The Celtics will have a crazy payroll next year, but it could be worth it if they keep winning.

It’s all a bit awkward as he’s a better player than Brown who will soon be making 50-60% less money. He’s the glue that holds the team together.

No, he's an excellent player any team would love to have though.

I also think he would get the max if he was on a team where he were more of a focal point of the offense, but I don't necessarily think that would be good for that team, if that makes sense.

Probably not. But I wouldn’t be surprised if his AAV is $30M+ per season for his next contract if he keeps up this level of production one more season (UFA in 2025).

White hits me as a Robert Horry type player whose value goes up with the quality of his teammates, which is not common in the NBA. It isn't common because most NBA players learn to play basketball with the ball in their hands so struggle to transition to role player status.

Eh, I wouldn't give him the max because I doubt any other team would. But the NBA CBA is designed to make vets like White overpaid. And at this point it is fair to say he's better than a role player.

Yes. But he can’t be your best player obviously can definitely be a perfect number 3 option on a championship level team. If Jrue/OG can get a max, so can White who is better than both players.

Boston might get priced out trying to keep White. OG vs White for contending teams would be a good debate. OGs age kinda gets cancelled out with his injury prone history.

I'd take him over Jrue or Jaylen right now, he's been THAT good.

No, but if his agent is smart, he will let him get to UFA. Signing an extension too early would be silly considering the Celtics' cap situation. He's one of the few plug-n-play players we have in this league.

Hopefully the Sixers throw everything at him. Would be a great play to make your direct competitor weaker while drastically improving your team.

On the right team, yes. Maybe not if you're the Pistons but if you are a winning team this is the kind of dude that makes your team more than the sum of its parts.

Happy for White. I still remember back in 2019 when I was telling posters he was our best and most impactful player and most people scoffed the notion. Glad he is finally showcasing how good he actually is

No, but these playoffs have me thinking who would you rather have White or Hart, both 29 and 6'4. I'm a Spurs fan so lean towards White, but both are excellent pieces.

Yeah no chance they can afford him. Unless they find away to get off the KP contract I think he leaves for a max from another team.

I'm in belief that Derrick White is a late bloomer, much like Kyle Lowry, and will be even better next season. His recent shooting and overall quality of play, isn't even a one-time thing. He's been gradually becoming better every month. Is he a max player like, say KAT, is? I don't think so. But there are many games when he plays like one. He's not just a role player. He's a super role player, who can play at a star level at any given night. I think Derrick White is going to ask for the max, and I'm inclined to believe that the Celtics will give it to him. That's how important he is.

He's a championship winning-caliber starting guard. You need guards like that in your line-up, even if you have to overpay him.
