Golden State has reportedly offered Gil a 5-year $100 mil deal.

indeed you are correct

Then, according to my sources, the Warriors quickly burned the phones and offered former Warrior Gilbert Arenas a maximum-level contract, one that would pay him more than $100 million over five years. My source told me that Gilbert received a flurry of phone calls from the Warriors in the first 30 minutes of free agency.

but in order for the warriors to try and offer him that money, they have to renounce the rights to Baron Davis, right?

Potentially you could extend him a flat-rate contract at $16.67 million per season. A 100m/6yr deal with 8% graduated salary increases would look like this:

Age: Salary
26: 13,888,888.89
27: 15,000,000.00
28: 16,111,111.11
29: 17,222,222.22
30: 18,333,333.33
31: 19,444,444.44

Now the first couple years don't look so bad. But I have no doubt that I can't build a championship contender around a team paying Gilbert Arenas $20 million. On the other hand, I don't know how bad the last year of this deal will actually look in 2014. There are a lot of factors in play. His knee has to hold up and other health issues can't arise. He needs to maintain his quickness and athleticism so people respect his shot and he's able to push the tempo--his two most valuable assets. Also, he will be playing the majority of that last year at age 32, since his birthday is early in January. All indications are that he's a gym rat but you never know how a player's career will pan out.

Personally, I'm kinda gunshy at this contract. He probably deserves it, but I don't see any other teams willing to bid that for his services (though the Clippers would love to and he would probably go to LA to fight Kobe for the spotlight). Clearly you are locking him up through his prime, so he's gonna want to get paid. But coming off of an injury-plagued year, I'm not giving six year without leaving myself an opt-out in one of those years.

I am intrigued at the prospect of him going to Golden State, but $20million/yr is like slitting your wrists now and letting it bleed out over the next few seasons.

Arenas on the Warriors would form quite a prolific team in my opinion. I kind of actually like that fit..even though i expect a bit of clamor from the mass amount of staunch Monta Ellis' supporters when a Arenas/Ellis backcourt is suggested.

Yeah, most GSW fans think Ellis will be Arenas in no time, despite the massively noticeable lack of a perimeter shot. I really like Arenas on the Warriors. He's a better fit than the larger Baron, who can work with posting up and thrive in a slow-down system, too. Arenas spends a lot of time gabling the passing lanes and jacking 3-balls. Is there any better system for him than Nellieball?

Here's to 6 more years of mediocrity in Washington! *raises glass*

Seriously though, gilbert should totally take the Golden State offer. Him the centerpiece of a run and gun chaos scoring team, coached by Don Nelson, on a team which doesn't give a crap about defense at all? Seriously, has there EVER been a better fit, especially since Phoenix has mostly abandoned the 05/06 run n gun game?
I'm not even a fan of his no-defense low percentage selfish chucking game and even I have to concede, it's a marriage made in heaven.

The Wizards are about to have one of those offseasons that handcuffs their franchise financially for the next 5-6 years. The Magic did it last year but they at least had Dwight Howard to build around. This is just poor decision making by the Wizards; seriously Gilbert Arenas is NOT a $100 million player. The Wizards are signing themselves into mediocrity for the foreseeable future.

If I recall correctly, here are the current offers:

GSW: $101m/5yr
WAS: $124m/6yr

Don't have to worry about Wizards competing anytime soon with those contracts handed out...

Even with Gilbert their no defense team will still win a little less than 50 games, get bounced by Lebron in the 1st round, or if they get a lucky draw, get bounced in the 2nd round.

(this is the part where Wiz fans insist the team was better defensively this year, whereas fans of teams who play average-to-good defense laugh at how lowered their expectations must be to think this year's team is good defense)

I honestly and truly believe that if Gilbert walked... and Washington replaced him with a solid 20ppg scorer (good percentage shooter) who can play good D, they would be a better team. Run the offense through Caron.

No, the Wizards thrive on pushing the pace. Since they're not getting Calderon or Nash, I question the ability to let him walk without losing a beat.

I thought Areneas was opting out to get a MAX contract.

If WAS signs him to 6yr/100 mil. Well that's fair price for what he is. I may not like him but he's certaintly one of the most talented franchise players out there and I'll gain some respect for him if he accepts.

If he holds out for a MAX contract then my opinion of him will remain unchanged and the team holding his rights will regret paying him 20 mil for the next 6 years.

I'm surprised Arenas is offered this much. I mean 25 mill a year potentially?

He's recently come off of the knee surgery so we don't know what his peak is yet considering this. I wish him the best of luck though. If he can take this deal good for him. I don't think he is worth it but all the power to him.

Its better if the Warriors could keep Baron, he's worth this contract more because he's a better player IMO and is currently healthy. At least Baron can create shots for his team and play defense better.

Other teams can only go 5 years though, while Washington's offer would be for 6 years. 5 years 80 million is an average of $16 million, while 6 years 100 million is an average of $16.7 million, so not much difference.

The difference might be slight, but it's still around $4M he's giving up. -- That's a few cars, houses, jewelry.......

Might not be a lot, but it is still a lot......

Yeah to the average person, but to them, it won't really factor in to which team they prefer to play for.

If Lewis was a free agent this year, he'd be getting the MLE somewhere.

He damn sure lucked out last year when he was the only 'big-name' free agent.

(Lucked out is an understatement with his contract)
