Anthony Randolph: Making Hollinger look stupider by the day

Post#1 » by NCHeels2008 » Sun Jul 19, 2009 2:27 am

I remember this article IDK if I'm the only one, but it's really making me pull for Randolph.

Draft Rater: Which big men will become the best pros?

Yes, this is true. Seen in many quarters as a high lottery pick, Randolph has virtually nothing in his statistical record to justify such a lofty selection.

In particular, his woeful ball-handling numbers are a major red flag. Randolph had more turnovers than any prospect except Beasley and Thompson, but those two players had every play run through them; I'm still waiting to find out Randolph's excuse.

Additionally, his 49.9 true shooting percentage is alarmingly bad for a guy who is supposed to dominate athletically.

He can block shots, and the fact his team was such a mess probably didn't help his numbers any, but gambling on Randolph with a high first-round pick looks like the basketball equivalent of hitting on 19 in blackjack. Hey, maybe the dealer throws out a 2 and everyone thinks you're a genius, but chances are you're going to bust.

It appears he's going to be drafted in the middle of the first round at worst, but even that appears to be a terrible mistake -- there is no track record whatsoever of a player rated this poorly achieving pro success.

Well, Randolph is showing signs of promise, but he hasn't done anything significant yet. He could just be a product of Nellie's system... Either way, Hollinger is an idiot, this isn't news.

Hollinger base everything off of stats. He's hit and miss. Sometimes he's right on, sometimes he's terribly off.

Sure, Randolph's been impressive so far, but like other posters have already said, he's done nothing of importance yet. Though it's possible he could in the future, he hasn't really done anything yest to make Hollinger "look stupid".

I agree he hasn't cemented this with accomplishment yet, but barring an ACL tear or outright benching it won't take much for him to prove Holly wrong, this thread isn't titled AR:Future Superstar, JH was saying he wasn't 1st round worthy so just being productive and mediocre would rebuke JH singling him out and laying into him prior to LY draft.

Be wary of the summer league superstar.

Still though, i'd bet cash monies that AR turns about to be a beast.

IMO, this is Hollinger's one real failing: he has a tendency at times to dig in his heels. His model predicted that Randolph would be bad, and that's perfectly fair...I didn't think much of him, either, and it's extremely difficult to extrapolate from one college season unless that season was tremendous.

That said, he has taken a pretty odd angle in downplaying Randolph's rookie year; usually, kids like Randolph who put up terrific per-minute stats (especially as the one area he needs to improve, offensive efficiency, is the most likely to improve over time) are the ones that Hollinger trumpets as potential breakouts. But not so Randolph.

(And I'm one of Hollinger's staunchest defenders)

Looking at Hollinger's theories, I'm surprised he didn't have AR as one of those breakout guys. Really his theory, actually supports the path AR goes. Surprised to see him with this stance.

^^ Poster above said it best.

Comparing AR to Magic is like comparing Kobe to Gabe Pruitt, don't insult AR that way.

I won't say he is looking stupid just yet. It still early. Although I watched Randolph a lot at the end of the year. IMO he has star written all over him. To me he was one of the most improved rookies during the year that I had seen. Not sure how good he could be but I be disappointed if he isn't at least a borderline all-star in 3 years.

In terms of Hollinger. IMO his numbers have become suspect when dealing with freshmen. Just to much of an improvement factor to deal with. Many freshmen get caught up in bad situations where they aren't used correctly. Simply put to much is made out of freshmen seasons when they aren't great. AR was one of the top HS prospects for a reason. The guy that John H sayed was close to a guarantee bust despite being a great prospect for years. Suddenly looked like some Scottie Pippen/KG young hybrid.

Somehow, I can see Don Nelson messing this up....

??? we all are saying he is a good player, we just want him to do it in the regular season before we proclaim him a star. Also Daye has looked better than him so should we go around calling Daye great?

PS Imma go to sleep, its 1:10 here in the east coast. Bash Away.

Hollinger bases his stuff on stats, so obviously some times he will be wrong, there are outliers for everything.
