No team has repeated since 02 Lakers...why?

Post#1 » by magicfan4life05 » Thu Nov 5, 2009 10:11 pm

I was thinking about this the other day.

Has anyone noticed it's been this long since a team repeated?

I checked this list

http://www.nba.com/history/finals/champions.html

and this is currently the longest stretch of no repeat champs since '70-'86

so that's roughly a 20 year period since that time

My favorite part when watching teams win the title, is how they defend it the following year, not that they need to, but it kinda validate the first one to show it was not a fluke (IM NOT SAYING TEAMS WHO DON'T REPEAT ARE A FLUKE !!!)

I think the closest a team came to repeating was the 2005 Pistons who went to game 7 vs the spurs and were down by 1/or up by 1 going into the 4th qtr...

so what's the reason for this 7 year stretch?

just randomness or does it speak to parity in the league?

 Yeah like that's changed.

I'd say players going to different teams via trades or FA signings.

Repeating in a major sport is VERY HARD, that's why.

When Pat Riley made that back 2 back guarantee back in 87', it's was an outlandish statement because it hadn't been done in the NBA since 1969. LA was that good of a team, and the BadBoys followed up with their own after Kareem retired & Bird started to decline.

By 92', Magic was gone, Bird was just about done, and many stars were aging. The talent pool was dilluted by the expansion era, and that benefitted great teams already intact(Chicago, Portland). So throughout 92' -99', there wasn't much depth or disruption amongst the top 2 or 3 teams. Houston(a good, not great team) win 2 in a row speaks volumes to how much lower the competition was during that time.

The late 90's introduced a lot of young talent, and many foreign players who replenished the NBA talent pool. So by 00' it once again became extremely hard to repeat. LA lucked out by having Kobe/Shaq/Phil, and they beat some TOUGH teams like the Blazers, Spurs and Kings during the 00'-02' period. The Spurs weren't a great team in their own right, but much like the 80's Celtics, they were able to win 2 in a row due to the high level of competition.

Fast forward to today, and I think LA has a legit chance at going back to back mainly because their built to withstand injury and have the best player. But it won't be easy.

Great post.

LA does have a great shot at repeating, but so have the majority of the champions over the previous 10 years, bar miami. This years top teams are the best they've been in the last 10 years

Injuries have been the main reason.

.4 and Manu's foul.

Otherwise, there's a Spurs 5-peat.

One could argue that if the 08' Lakers had a healthy Bynum & Ariza, they would be going for a 3 peat this year......

Not always. 82 game seasons started in 1968. Before that there were 81, 80, 79, 75, 72, 71, 66 and 68 game seasons.
